Native American Ira Hayes was one of the men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. Listen to the Ballad of Ira Hayes by Johnny Cash.

Poor Waylon Jennings....Remember "the day the music died" (February 3rd, 1959), the day memorialized by Don McLean in his 1972 hit "American Pie"? On this day, a plane crash killed up-and-coming musicians Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson (ie, the Big Bopper), and Ritchie Valens. The plane had been chartered to transport the performers from Iowa to their next show in North Dakota.
One member of Holly’s travelling band who did not make this plane trip was Waylon Jennings.
He had been hired by Holly to play bass for him on that fateful Winter Dance Party Tour. Rather than further enduring tour bus issues and a long frozen bus trip, Holly decided to charter a small plane. Unfortunately, it could not fit everybody. Richardson, who was suffering from the flu, asked Jennings, who was 21 at the time, for his seat on the plane. When Jennings told Buddy Holly that he was going to take the bus, Holly jokingly told him he hoped the bus broke down, to which Jennings replied, “I hope your ol’ plane crashes.”
Waylon never really got over this encounter, and it haunted him til the day he died in 2002.
RIP Waylon.
Sometimes fate deals us a terrible hand. Fortunately, Waylon Jennings did go on to be a trailblazer in outlaw country music!!!
I'm so glad Waylon did not get on that plane.
Talking about the luck of flipping a coin!! Amazing story!!
***READ THIS HISTORY LESSON BP***
He also lost one of his band members in a crash that brought back old wounds and that's why him and Merle Hagard never spoke again because Merle took advantage of the situation..
True story!!
Waylon owed a lot to the native tribes. They loved having Waylon play on the reservations out west. They kept him making a living when he was having hard times.
Explain man lol your'e so far off like shut UP dude come off it
Struggle Jennings is Waylon's step-grandson. Shooter Jennings is his son.
Whey Jennings is his grandson
Thomas Gabriel is Johnny Cash’s grandson.
@@stevenangle8407Waylon adopted struggles momma. So that’s struggles grandpa to.
Don't tell people they are related to Waylon
@@russellw7785 😂😂😂 or what bubba… like seriously. It’s documented. Whether you like it or not.
Charley pride, a black man in country music was very well loved‼️ He had a great voice great songs, very talented man.
he was but they would not put his picture on his first album because they knew that a lot of country music fans would not buy his record because of his color. Country music and America has come a long way but we should never minimize the truth about our past. For the first 18 years of my life i never listened to anything but country music and still love to listen to the artist of the 60' and 70's because they were stars when i was growing up so i am not a country music hater. I just remember that country music was not friendly or helpful to black artist trying to start a career in the business.
The native people loved Waylon. He was born in Texas but spent years in Phoenix. He used to go to the reservations and put on concerts for the people. One of his early hits was Love of the Common People.
God bless the Highway Men. Four of the best entertainers ever.
1984 and it's about time you got to Waylon! MORE MORE MORE!!! :)
1982, front row seats to see Waylon in the Spokane Coliseum. Someone took the mic, and said all y'all, please remove your hats in the arena. Waylon came out to start the show and said, "Oh! Forgot to take my hat off." He removed his black Stetson and threw it like a Frisbee into the crowd!
naah, BP,
it’s a blessing; a total blessing just to be born in America!
we got it made, when compared to ALL other countries of the world.
Thank God, for letting me born in the USA!
AND…talkin’ bout a freakin guitar picker, WOW!!
lots of ppl don’t even know he was a session player / picker for many artists music!
Several years ago, his grandson called the Kansas Vietnam Veterans and Family reunion an a Saturday morning ti see if he could bring hid band up to play at the reunion. He was advised that they didn't have the funds to pay him and he advised that he didn't care. He brought his band up , from Oklahoma, to El Dorado Lake State Park in Kansas. He had started to play the second song and it started raining. He continued to play for another half hour. When he started singing one of Waylon's songs, you would have thought it was Waylon singing! He was a realy down to earth guy,and said he just wanted to give back to the veterans!
Waylon was absolutely awesome!
Still is. Always will be 😉
He stands alone in th" music he made,Waylon's Music ..
I’m from Southeastern Kentucky and if you came through here and needed help the people around here will help good decent people and take you in no matter the color cause we are good decent people here and we help each other, we wave and nod our head if we see you out, whether we know you or not we’re friendly people by nature, we live the rural life , we love the Lord and love our people.
Hello from BGKY.
Bp Waylon Jennings is an American Country Icon!🇺🇲 Ain't living long like this (pertains to today) Honkey Tonk Hero's and Are you sure Hank did this way❤❤😊
The “Conversation” by Waylon & Hank Jr. is a must watch!
Waylon Jennings is a legend of country music and a man of his own style who does things his way. He's one of the great's!
This is from a time when America was actually great wasn't perfect but nothing ever is but it WAS alot better then compared to now👍👍
Waylon, simply the best country artist ever. A legend!
Struggle Jennings is actually a step-grandson of Waylon Jennings. Waylon's wife Jessie Colter, was first married to guitar legend Duane Eddy and their daughter was the mother of Struggle Jennings. You can tell by the love and respect Struggle has for Waylon that they formed a tight bond.
Duane Eddy just died on April 30, 2024. Great influential guitarist.
@@tomhiggins875 Sorry to hear that! Rest In Peace Duane Eddy.
We live in Arizona and spend a lot of time off-road exploring old mines and traveling on old railroad, mining, Indian and stagecoach trails. It is amazing what the men who came before us created. God bless America and praise God for those men.
Waylon "The Belle of the Ball". ''I came uninvited, but I'm leaving with the Belle of the Ball". Love Waylon.
Wayland Arnold "Waylon" Jennings. RIP.
Thanks for sharing my favorite male country artist ever!❤
Shooter Jennings is Waylon's son. Struggle Jennings is Waylon's step-grandson. Struggle's name is his stage name, but Waylon was very influential in his life.. Waylon's insignia is tattooed on Struggle's back.
Whey Jennings is his grandson
Waylon is one of the VERY few country singers that I love, thanks! I think he's incredibly underrated.
He was never underrated by musicians only by executives that tried to stop him from playing his music his way and he won and they found out the hard way..Waylon has the first platinum, triple and quadruple platinum on his wall..
I wish most young people had seen what you’ve seen and were as appreciative of our great county
Nice one! I concur with othe suggestions of doing Luckenbach Texas!❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
I've always been crazy.
But it's kept me from going insane 👍
I have been watching many videos here on CZcams from people from North Korea that defected from NK as well as people from other countries that have visited the USA and watching their amazement and admiration of us, not only as people individually but as a nation, has reawakened me to the realization of how much influence the US has on the rest of the world and what a huge responsibility we have as a nation to set an example of what it's like to live in a free society. We aren't perfect but we struggle every day to be better. We are a most fortunate people to have been born here or to have been able to become naturalized citizens here and even those that haven't become citizens yet, we all have a responsibility to live up to the dream that founded our country. America isn't just a country it's an ideal, an idea, a goal, a hope and I firmly believe that together we can set aside our differences, join in the things we share and continue to keep our beacon of light shining for those that long for liberty, justice, human dignity and the right to build the life they choose.
Thank you for Waylon!!
Country music is full of Patriotism and love of the Lord!
Black, you really need to go down the Country rabbit hole…No Boundaries
Pure love for Watasha🖤🩶🤍
Saw Waylon twice alone and once with the Highwaymen. Waylon was his own man, terrific entertainer, guitarist and composer. I loved Waylon.
Respect for a great Native American! Johnny Cash
“Ira Hayes” Medal of Honor recipient. Battle of Iwo Jima. Very good song.
waylon ! "rose in paradise", "waymore blues " "i've always been crazy "
Waylon is the original Outlaw. He didn't want to play by Nashville rules. So he moved to Austin and started " Outlaw County " Lonesome on'ry and mean , is one of my favorites
Glad to see you reacting to all kinds of Music. It is so refreshing to listen through new ears ,well your ears.
🇬🇧 I feel exactly the same coming from the UK. Sometimes people don't know just how lucky we are, just to be born where we were! And that's all I have to say bout that. Love & peace to y'all. ❤ 🇬🇧🇺🇲❤🎼🎶
First concert I ever went to, Waylon and Jesse, back in 1977. I'll never forget it. 👍
You are going to get comments from this video for a long time with stories about the man the legend. Mr. Waylon Jennings. Here's mine . I don't recall the year but its been quite a few years ago. I will condense it to save time. The IRS had taken Willy Nelsons home in Evergreen for back taxes owed. Well when it came time to auction it off Waylon was there and won . A couple days later Waylon caught up to Willy on a Farm Aid tour and handed him the keys on stage and said something to the effect of '' Here's your house keys, don't lose em again'', Then they embraced like two brothers reunited after years of being apart.
I think you would enjoy Waylon's "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean."
YES YES YES there are so many good ones...HE IS A VIBE!
WAYLON!
We did this song in choir when I was in junior high. It was a whole medley of patriotic American songs. We were all so proud to sing it. I miss those days. 😢🇺🇸
Waylon was a guitar player for Buddy Holly and gave up his seat on the doomed airplane that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, inspiring Don McLeans American Pie. Waylon survived the day the music died.
Waylon Jennings was always a favorite of mine. As a native Texan, he, Don Williams (Portland, TX famed son), & Mac Davis (Lubbock, TX) had such smooth, enjoyable voices and wrote such great music. RIP to all 3. Btw...Mac Davis apparently WAS buried in his jeans, I understand. If you know, you know. Lol.
I met Mr. Jennings once, in the 90's. I worked at a Sheplers western wear store in Austin, TX. and they let him come in after we closed, to shop. He was super nice. Nobody bothered him while he walked around, and when he was done he stayed to sign autographs and chit chat. I still have the hat he signed for me.
I'm gonna say it.... Make America Great Again..
Reminder of how Europeans defeated native America xD
AMEN ❤
America is great becaause of al its people not because of any president especially that one.
@@michaelcstonebear420 Michael, no one said any different. MAGA and America First are about us and our responsibility to love our nation. The President made that clear from DAY 1.
Hey there - Kathy here. Waylon is a legend and just didn't care what the industry wanted him to play and did his own thing. Can't get any better than Waylon for just pure country music. Thanks again for another great reaction. Gotta run and get shit done today! So over this rain we are getting in North Carolina! Have a great weekend and stay blessed!
Thank You Guys Soooooo Much for this one. I had forgotten this American Anthem. We The People Feel this way. The Nasty Narratives are all lies.
Thank you so much for this one ! Waylon loved this country and so do I 🇺🇸
Someone in the T-shirt making business please send him a T that says, " Waylon Jennings is my spirit animal". 🥰
Waylon was loved on American Indian Reservations. His songs are still played on the airwaves across Indian Country.
They called Waylon the music man and said he always kept his word and don't do him wrong..
Waylon is my man. Another good patriotic song by Charlie Daniel’s is called In America. Check it out. And please keep going down the Waylon rabbit hole. He’s phenomenal
Loved this. 🔥❤️
I grew up in southern Oregon, graduated in 1977. I later learned I lived in a very racist town. It surprised me, because none of my friends were racist. It was their parents. My generation actually thought that shit got settled, we thought we had taken care of that. I guess some didn't get the message, but overall, I don't think Americans are racist. I now live in NW Washington State. We got some proud boys in the neighborhood, along with many Ukrainians, Latinos and natives. Overall, we all get along. One of the proud boys actually stepped in to shoot at a drunk dude with a shotgun that shot 2 cops in our neighborhood. We can coexist. Peace out.
Born in California and have been here for going onto 62 years. I will never move away. I listen to Waylon almost day. Dont hate on California. There are a lot of country folk agriculture industry is going strong out here.
My favorite song by Waylon is Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line!!❤🎉
Greatest line in one of Waylons song is "I've always been crazy but it's kept me from being insane" Check it out. I believe the title is "I've Always Been Crazy"
This was his next to last chart hit. Rose In Paradise followed it.
There’s a spoken word album called America why I love her is a must especially title track
There is no one like Waylon!!
Another great reaction. When i hear the two of you talking about good old boys and antics, i can't help but think of "Just Good Ol' Boys" by Moe Bandy and Joe Stampley. Thanks for a great reaction.
"Where's the Dress" hits way different these days...
Waylon was one of the Highwaymen, remember how good they are?!?
Legend!
please do Waylon Jennings I've always been crazy
I’ve always been Crazy is on my daily drive playlist. My kids know every word!!!!!
MY THEME SONG! hahahahahaha "I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going INSANE!!!!" HAHAHAHA
Waymore Blues🔥🔥🔥
you guys nailed this reaction as usual...great takes!!! be sure to check out "Luckenbach Texas"!!!! GREAT song by Waylon...
Whey Jennings is another one of Waylon's grandsons. He is following in Waylon's footsteps singing country.
Waylon is the best country singer ever. You need to do "Good Hearted Woman".
Did you know that song was inspired by Tina Turner? Waylon said he saw a story about her dealing with Ike's partying. Of course, Waylon also says that he wrote it about Jesse Colter putting up with his partying. I am guessing the truth is in the middle somewhere...lol.
Whey Jennings is Waylon's grandson, you should react to Whey's "Lead Me Home"
Waylon is probably my favorite country star of all time and this song is one of the reasons why. He was a great American. If Waylon is your spirit animal then I would love to hang out with you.
You need to look up his grandson named Whey Jennings. He sounds just like his grandfather.
Waylon is a Country Music giant. He left us a phenomenal body of works, so many great songs to choose from and enjoy. Some time, check out his "WURLITZER PRIZE" czcams.com/video/ysbqVwVqDIE/video.html. It's what a real Country Music song sounds like.
We are not pro war but will fight for our country we will
Good reaction BP. That's the way I feel about America, too.
Now you’ve found one of the Goats! I’ve a snapshot of Waylon with his arm around me from 1980, at an all day concert at the old Engall’s stadium in Chattanooga, TN. I met and got pics with Lee Greenwood that same day 😊 That was not only a great concert with several artists, but it was such a great day to meet them.
You must listen to Waylon's last live concert from Jan. '00. CZcams has the song "Amanda/A Couple More Years", which will bring tears -- guaranteed.
This made my day!!! I just come home from a long day at work, crack open a cold one, and see what Black Pegasus is reacting to today. I totally forgot about this one, great track....his song "Amanda" is like a slow/waltz type ballad, He also had a song called "Outlaw Sh!t", Struggle remade it also, Struggle's version is sooooo dope!!! Him and Willie have a few great tracks like "Lukenbach Texas" i think you'd like. Another great reaction and happy to see Democrat Don on once again!!! 🤘😆
I had actually forgot about this one. A truly wonderful song.
Check out Waylon and Johnny Cash -Wish I Was Crazy Again. They were roommates back in the day hiding their drugs from each other. They were lifelong friends through everything.
You cannot go wrong with Waylon!!!!
All Waylon’s songs are awesome!
"Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times." - G. Michael Hopf
That is a GREAT quote. Never heard it before but I'm sure it is true.
@@sandramoore I don't know who G. Michael Hopf is, but I've heard the quote many times over the years. I googled the quote to copy and paste it and that's who it's attributed to.
Great reaction ❤
My dad was a Huge Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson fan as well as a huge Patriot.
As a Rocker Chick I humbly say, "You are right Dad"
It took 2020 for me to go down the rabbit hole of what is going on and has been going on in our Country. I took so much for granted, not anymore
Proud American ❤🇺🇸✌️
Keep up the great work.
Love me some waylan he was one of the best older country music singers the good old singers are slowly dying
Waylon Jennings, my all time favorite country singer and song writer. His first grandson Waylen Jennings is following in his grandfathers legacy. His son Shooter Jennings is also a singer song writer who does rock and country. Struggle Jennings is his step grand son. I absolutely love this song. It is a very powerful song. You also might want to check out Travis Tritt who was a very close friend of Waylon and is also a country singer who does great things.
He's not talking about reparations. He's talking about keeping promises made: "...expect a little from you. Promise and then follow through."
I got goosebumps too.
***GOOD HEARTED WOMAN*** ***IVE ALWAYS BEEN CRAZY*** ***LUCHENBACH, TX*** ***DON'T YOU THINK THIS OUTLAW BIT DONE GOT OUT OF HAND***
BP you need to check out Home Free “Brothers in Arms”. It’s a cover, actually an upgrade, of a Dire Straits song. A Capella, no instruments.. just pure harmony and patriotic chills. 👍👍👍
🔴⚪🔵 Most all the foreign reactors have talked about of the things they love about America is our patriotism, and how they wish their home country was more like that. I'm starting to wish ours was too. So much has changed since 9-11, when there were flags everywhere and more people had pride in our country. If it's so bad, why do people risk it all to come here? 🔴⚪🔵
Love some Waylon!!!! This was one of my favorite songs of his!!!!
You need to check out Brooks and Dunn 's "Only in America"!! It's very uplifting and the video is spectacular!! Beautiful!! It's my favorite country American anthem!!! 🇺🇲🇺🇲
The world needs to reclaim their identities and proudly defend them. 🤍🕊️🏴
That's what we are doing! Welcome to the party!
@@ConspiracySmurf 🫂 long overdue 🤍
Two great Waylon songs you should check out are "Fallin' Out" and "Honky Tonk Heros."
Your program tells me there is hope for the knew generation
You have quickly become my favorite reactor, especially when Don is there. Love your patriotism and your ability to speak common sense to the viewer. Here's one I know you'll enjoy, The Charlie Daniels Band "In America." Please check it out.
You should check out Alabama, 40 Hours a week, I think you would like that one.
Love that song
Great song for you to express your appreciation for this country. You sound like you were born 20 some years too late.
So much more from Waylon to hear, look forward to more reactions from him, Willie and David Allen Coe. The 'outlaw' trio from back in the day.
"Don't y'all think this outlaw bits done got out of hand" is a must. About law raiding a recording session. MANY others as well
Waylon Jennings was Buddy Holly’s guitarist. Waylon went solo after Holly died, and a lot of his early stuff is Buddy Holly covers.
Waylon also lost his seat on the plane that crashed with the big booper, Buddy Holly, and Riche Valens
Bass player I think
@@timmoser3526, Waylon gave up his seat to the J.P. Richardson, aka The Big Bopper. J.P. had the flu.

Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys by Walon and Willie is a must my friend. Don is understandable getting worked up. I feel your pain Don ❤ Peace out guys ✌️ ☮️
