As a former BMW sales dude, dude I can tell you it’s quite regular for a ten or fifteen year old base model 3 series to come in as a trade that is absolutely cherished by its one owner. Unlike any other marque the more basic the BMW the more it’s loved.

Only the base models last 10-15 years without becoming mechanical write-offs at some point - particularly the V8 models. V8 BMW's should only be leased, or traded in after 3 years because the engines are plagued with multiple fatal failure points that can start to kick in fairly early in the vehicles life. Actually even some BMW i4's are stinkers long term. i6's are not so bad usually, but even they can get expensive at the 10 year mark due to some of the odd engineering choices making some long term wear items exceedingly difficult to replace.

    I have just bought a 420i after coming out of a Mazda 6 2.2d Sport Nav+.
The 420i doesn't have as much spec as the Mazda but then the tech is so much better. I like a bit of performance but not to the point that I loose my licence and its brilliant.
The only option I ticked was the M Sport Pro package which is basically a looks upgrade for I think it was £2000 where you get
    Bigger 19" Wheels
    Adaptive Suspension
    Ugly glass in the rear
Black front grille so it don't stand out as much
Darkened front lights and a Black lip spoiler.
Which is well worth the money.

I think that a lot of ordinary drivers overestimate how much car they need. If I can go "whoops, I am driving at 130km without trying" in an ageing Ford Falcon BFIII station wagon, then you don't need to have a souped up sports car to enjoy it.
Starting to think that I will never climb another ladder.

Just watched the second part of the video John, I really think it would be a great idea to make the ladder use part a separate video, really informative, and there's only one thing better than being injuring yourself and learning not to do it again, and that's to learn from somebody else. One thing I didn't get to learn from somebody else when I was twelve is never to use front brake only on a push bike to stop quickly at the bottom of a hill. Physics is awesome.

The premium European brands are not so premium no more compared to the mainstream brands. Hyundai for instance had Albert Bierman develop their N line and even basic models come with all the safety and infotainment features that most people need and want.
Years ago people bought Benz’s because they were built like a rock but the current models are mediocre. The AMG models are raucous performance cars which are desirable but only for performance nuts. Most people buy them because of their perceived premium that was generated decades ago and which they don’t deserve.

Agreed regarding the 420i… for someone who just wants a nice car to drive, and isn’t a “performance nut” a 420 with a few select options is fine… I think of it like this: I’m a rev head; so I’d buy the 340 (or in dream land the m4) as I’m after performance. If I was buying for my wife, who doesn’t give a toss about performance, as long as it’s not gutless, it grab her a well optioned 420 and spend the difference making my weekender faster… and happy new year to you John, you have kept me entertained all year with your videos, sense of humor and candor. See ya in 2022… hopefully it’s nice to us all…

Great safety talk on ladders John. When my job was factory maintenance, from 3 tread stepladder to 3 section full ladders (sometimes a job is too urgent for a rental cherry picker) through good procedure I never had a fall injury. However my old dad was knocked about when a wooden ladder likely as old as him failed. He was lucky, twice men in my village died in such falls while making roof repairs.

I saw your ladder fall video and it reminded me of many years ago being a taxi driver. A drunk man cradling 2 longnecks staggered up to the cab, his hand slipped on the door handle, and he sprawled on to the footpath. Fifty yearslater I can still hear the splat as his head hit the footpath, blood started pouring out his ears. In the 10 minutes or so it took the ambulance to get there he did not move. Very scary stuff.

Hello John. Calling a B48B20A from the 420i and a B48B20B from the 430i same hardware is over simplifying it. They are vastly different engines. The A variant has the exhaust manifold built into the head to allow for faster warm ups. The intercooler is integrated into the intake manifold on the B variant. Just to name a few. They don't ever share piston rings. Best regards Marcin

Happy New Year to you and family! One important point which is hammered into us in emergency services is the footing of a ladder. Never climb without someone else at base. Also, it is best if the ladder can be tied off towards top when you first climb up.
I had an embolism at left optic junction some years back. Everything went black and I lost a few seconds. Vision returned. The fun of all the diagnosis, testing and approval to drive again was "intense"

  • @davidbrayshaw3529

I have used ladders extensively throughout my life. I have miraculously survived a fall which later became subject matter in OHS training. Three years ago I attended my Son's best friend's funeral. He had fallen from a ladder at a relatively low height, surviving for only a few hours before passing away. This happened just before Christmas. What a Christmas.
I concur with all that John states with regards to ladder safety in this presentation. That said however there are glaring oversights in this presentation.
A ladder should always be secured either by lashing or by having a second person "footing" the ladder.
A ladder should also only be used in the presence of a second person who can render aid in case of a fall.
A third consideration is one's age, aptitude and fitness. This is the "silent killer" with regards to ladder safety and one that us tough blokes ignore the most. We grossly overestimate our ability. The average age of a ladder accident victim is around 65 years of age. Not all people are comfortable getting up ladders. Fear greatly increases risk when using ladders. If you're scared, don't climb one, ever.
You must be fit! This isn't just about strength either. Small "niggles" such as a sore wrist or a bruised knee can have fatal consequences. Inner ear infections, colds, flu etc. greatly impact on one's ability to safely use a ladder.
Go with your gut instinct, always. If you think what you are doing is "dodgy", it is!

    • @oldcynic6964
      @oldcynic6964 Před 2 lety +1

" A ladder should always be secured either by lashing or by having a second person "footing" the ladder.
A ladder should also only be used in the presence of a second person who can render aid in case of a fall. "
Why not just say "Get a pro to do it for you" ? Sometimes the cost of getting a pro would be wildly more than you can afford. Sometimes you can't lash it until you get to the top (if at all). Sometimes you don't have a big beefy mate who could physically restrain the ladder. (Although given Euclidean geometry, the ability of anyone at the base of a ladder to apply any sort of moment to the ladder is going to be limited). The only bit of advice I'd support is getting wifey to hang around. She may be unable to "render aid" (unless you married a nurse) but she should be able to ring Triple 0 if the job turns pear-shaped.

    • @davidbrayshaw3529
      @davidbrayshaw3529 Před 2 lety

@@oldcynic6964 I am endeavouring to educate people as to ways to mitigate potential injury caused by the misuse of ladders. In no way do I suggest that any of these are fool proof, they are merely a way of reducing risk. Every time one climbs a ladder, there is risk involved. "Pros" injure themselves falling from ladders. If you cast an eye back over my initial post you will notice that I have been touched by injury and death resulting from the misuse of ladders, by "pros". This is something that you may choose to consider or otherwise. Amateurs harm themselves too.
In some instances it is not possible to secure a ladder without climbing to the top but at that point it may be better to do so than not.
"Footing" ladders does not overcome all of the geometric forces applied when climbing a ladder but it does reduce at least a couple of them.
I would venture to suggest that having "wifey" present to ring triple zero in case of a fall puts one at a significant advantage over having no "wifey" present in case of a fall, regardless of her qualification.
At no point have I sought your endorsement of my advice. My only consideration has been to raise awareness as to some of the ways that ladders can be used in a "safer" fashion. Of course it is up to the user to make their own informed decisions as to how they use the technology. Their wit and will is beyond my control.
If you are not cognisant of these methods or have an inability to learn and understand the message that I am trying to relay, I apologise for not being able to covey this in a simpler fashion so that you may be able to understand. Clearly this is something that I have failed to achieve.
I would appreciate your understanding for those that may have not considered some of the risk mitigation methods that I have mentioned and allow them to form their own objective opinion as to how they might better serve themselves with the knowledge that I have tried to impart. Thank you.

And a very Happy new year to you too, Mr Cadogan.
I have to say I appreciate the candid way you discuss the automobile industry. I can say without doubt that you have steered me away from certain brands that I may have gone for without your intervention.
regarding the ladder safety, I was once stuck on top of a rather tall building ( I would guess around 5 or 6 meters up ). I had managed to get to the top, but when I was trying to get back on the ladder I was unable to do so without the ladder shifting to the side.
The ladder would have shifted to the side in the manner that I would be returned to earth at an acceleration of circa 9.81 meters per second squared.
I wanted to get on top of the roof as I was clearing out the gutter and there are some areas of the gutter that are inaccessible by ladder. To cut a long story short I spent 2 hours on top of that roof contemplating my mistakes. Needless to say that I wont be making those mistakes again.
The little bits of mancave have been rather inspiring and I know exactly where I plan to put my own cave. I already have a list of things to get done that is a mile long.

Now that was next level interesting! Came for a look at the BMW but stayed for the 'no bullshit' safety instruction - excellent!!!! No one ever 'raves' John where safety is concerned, the more focus the better. From a road transport background and when the emphasis eventually swung around to 'how safe were we?' I realised I wasn't safe - just almost dead lucky. My employer at the time had 62 ( yes you read that right, sixty two) workers killed world wide on the job in that year. And no I wont rave on either but believe me when I say that statistic had a direct impact in focusing the mind. It was more realistic about the qualities of the 'low end' model against the perverts criticism when matched against the 'big one' I have a thing with bigger is better but to be honest, in this country of over policed speed limits and poor quality roads, maybe smaller is better for a sensible buy.

My daily drive is a 15 yr old E90 323i, and asides having a brand new 6spd manual X1 back in 2018 over in Greece for 10 days, up until Tuesday this week I had not had the chance to drive a new Beemer..However, as my car needed some work done to it by my local dealer here in Hobart, they gave me a loan car for the day. A lovely shade of dark blue 420i coupe. All i can say from my all too brief experience with this car is that I would have willingly kept it and not worried about my poor old car. The 420i made me feel very special, it is extremely comfortable, handled superbly and has bags of power, well at least in comparison to what I am used to. Alas I had to return it to the dealer and collect my car. As it turned out it was the General Manager’s car which I had the pleasure of driving. Would I buy one if I could afford one, ahm yes, but sadly that isn’t possible. Do i like the huge grill on new Beemers - no I really dislike the look and think it detracts from BMW’s. Hopefully they will ditch this look with their next generation of cars.

Thanks John. I often see internet commenters calling BMWs money pits/bad cars. Not so in my view. They are just an incredible pleasure to drive.
Yes they can be costly to service, but that’s a premium you pay for a beautiful car. I drive a seven year old 220i and regularly get the “nice car” comment at the car wash or servo. It’s also handles beautifully, is fun to polish, and zips about traffic with gusto.
They’ve somehow acquired the status of a lemon car, yet I’ve had two and never had any issues.
Likewise for every owner I know. Very rarely does one experience a catastrophic failure, and if you do, unlike many brands, the dealer will assist you provided it’s within warranty. They don’t try to screw you out of a repair.

Do you take it in for service when the car says it's due on the screen? They are known for burning oil due to owners being allergic to going in for servicing less than 20000km intervals regardless of what the computer says. That's why you don't see many 00s small BMW's.

Happy new year and thanks for the videos. On Boxing Day, my wife was on a ladder putting books in a bookcase. The ladder is designed so it will only attach to the shelf at 75 degrees. She missed the last step and fell 30 cm. That was a day in hospital checking there were no serious injuries (fortunately, there weren't). 4 days later we got the message that a COVID positive person was in the ED at the same time. So, 3 hours yesterday queueing up and getting a COVID test. BTW, I am an optometrist. The vaso-vagal response (the loss of consciousness when your eye is hit) is so sensitive in some people I have had them faint when I check the eye pressure, Not often, but it happens.

I had a set of steps fail when painting a ceiling, the mechanism that stopped the two halves moving apart fails and the steps did the splits with me sitting on the top rung. I landed on my arse and got concussion, never realised my brain was down there but makes sense the number of times I have banged my head without even getting a bruise.

The 430i has standard Comfort Access, Adaptive Cruise as you call it; Driving Assistant Professional (semi-autonmous cruise), leather seats, parking assist plus and a few other small things, while these options raise the base price to ~$87k on the 420i vs ~$99k on the 430i with the former equipment as standard. So you are paying ~$12k more for the 430i, which is mostly for the more powerful engine and aforementioned standard items which are optional on the 420i. And knowing that you could only afford the base model.

The Knipex waterpump pliers are great too. I also have their screwdrivers and they seem to fit flat head a Philips head screws positively. If you are doing any of the many different construction courses through TAFE (not the private supplier course) they have the time and a lack of the profit motive to go through all you mentioned about ladders. Thanks for reminding me about the rules. Enjoyed the BMW report too. The 420 is a surprisingly quick car point to point for rural trips.

Happy new year to you too John, I have been watching your vids since you started, my favorite shows of the past were the nut-fest Fridays and you helping locals fight corporate assholes. Here in Canada there is no 420i, we start at 430i without adaptive cruise - everything in luxury car land is an option or part of an extras package.

Errrm, what happened to ladder safety tip #1?
Get a Tiffany to stand at the bottom holding on to it! (the ladder John, THE LADDER!)
This tip should not be confused with sending Tiffany up the ladder to do the work while you gawk up at her, sorry, i mean 'supervise' from below.
SKY satellite dish installers have to place the ladder against the wall where it's needed and then drill a couple of holes in the wall and secure the ladder in place before they are allowed to use it.
I've been a viewer for a couple of years now. Love the show! Keep it up!
Happy New Year to you and yours

I would suggest a journalist's reactions could also be affected on the vehicle they drove before the test. I remember a 70's Sunday times reviewer complaining that the Escort RS2000 was slow. A couple od weeks later he lauded the Escort 1300's rapid performance. The cars preceeding these respectively were a Ferrari and a Skoda 1000.
Obviously that didn't affect you John!

Happy near year John. Something you didn't mention about the knipex... the leverage you get is 10:1 on those pliers. if your hands are capable of 10kg of grip, your pliers will have 100kg of grip... they are well worth the money. I have a pair for home handyman plumbing and they work a treat

On the Knipex front I’m with you.
I bought mine online well before they were available locally & love them.
Funny enough I’m a lifelong tradie but always spun the tumbler in the wrong direction when using adjustable spanners, it did my head in.
The Knipex have made my life so much better that the cost is inconsequential.
The other thing is that they can be used like a poor man’s ratchet wrench in emergencies. 👍

Ow…your describing your eye-lancing ordeal had me curdling a bit more than usual, in part because of a lights-out incident of my own a few weeks back, when I was making a turn on a green light, and a car, seemingly out of nowhere, smacked me and my Vespa GTS down hard enough to partially crush the left floorboard and knock me out cold, but otherwise leave me with nothing broken or fractured, just sore as hell when I came to. (Helmet, armored jacket, and the bike's step-through frame did the rest.) I have absolutely no memory of the impact, so no mental trauma from *that*. As far as ladders go, I never use one without wearing a hard hat, but I thank you profusely for the advice on placement-I had a vague notion about this at best until now. Will go full-on with eye protection too from here on. A good New Year's to you! (Oh, that KNIPEX… *damn*, there goes another US$60 for me right now…)
