I had it rough in bootcamp. As in rough what I mean is personal life got in the way and ruined my experience. I could not control any of this by any chance. A week before my battle stations it was a Sunday afternoon right after holiday routine. Around 1630 (4:30) I received an American Red Cross Letter in the mail. I was brought down to the OOD office with the chaplain and the LCPO. My first RDC opened the letter and read it to me. It stated that my mother was requesting presence of Seaman Recuit (My name) of the death of my father. I just sat there froze and immediate hallucination. As if my world just shattered in front of me. I didn't cry or do much. I was in so much disbelief I don't remember much on what I said after that. I called my mom me stating the first thing how did he die? My dad died of a Heart attack in his sleep that early Sunday morning. I did not sleep that night. I knew I was going to get set back in training due to this. But I didn't care I received emergency leave by Senior chief and went home that following Monday. Had his funeral and buried him on a Thursday of that week. Friday rolls around and headed back to the RTC Great lakes to finish out the last 3 weeks of bootcamp. 26JAN24 I sit here in my room right now texting this. It was the hardest thing to go though. Most recruits don't make it or go to seps. What I'm saying is I did it. A death was not going to stop me from serving this country even tho shit happens in life. You can't control anything of what happens around you but you can control yourself and be the best you can be. My dad would be Damn proud of me for making the sacrifice to raise my right hand at MEPS. Unfortunately that was the last time I would see him but I had to move forward to make my life. I hope this was inspiring to someone reading this long paragraph lol

Navy has been great for my nephew. He came from a relatively poor US Family. He entered right from High School. He worked his butt off and was first in his Sonar tech A-school. He has been all over Asia. He got his dolphins on an LA Attack sub in Guam. He spent 3yrs as enlisted on subs. He tested for the NAPS program and got into the US Naval academy. Class of 26. He plans to get his PhD and wants to captain Virginal class subs. I believe he will too. The US Navy has been nothing but positively transformative for this young man. Being away from home and his crazy parents was the best thing for him. Made him independent and single minded in improving himself.
