  • I recently had an opportunity to sit down with Ben Collins and talk about his career in racing, stunt driving, and of course in his iconic role as The Stig on Top Gear.
    If you're a fan of Top Gear and enjoy car stories, I highly recommend Ben's memoir, "The Man in the White Suit: The Stig, Le Mans, The Fast Lane and Me."

    Such a cool opportunity and interview, man! You killed it as host! And Ben was such a nice and chill guy considering the level of fame he’s achieved in the space.

      Thanks buddy! As somebody who's trying to get better as a driver and at telling stories about cars, there's a lot I can learn from Ben. Really grateful to him for sharing his perspective.

    Great interview Josh
    Unrelated question....I'm looking at getting a c6 zo6 for the track/street driving but trying to do about 10 track days per year. What is the largest rim/wheel combo can you fit on the rear and front? Is it the size you have? I wouldn't want any rubbing at full compression. Also is it worth going to a full coilover setup? Do you eliminate the leaf spring if you do? Would you go Ohlins?

      Hey Chris, I don't know for sure about wheel size, but I don't know that you can go any bigger than what I've got without rubbing. Obviously alignment will play a part and you could potentially use spacers (if you get longer wheel studs).
      Think about the tires you want to run - not all tires are available in all sizes, you don't want to buy wheels and then find out the tires you want aren't available in the correct size to fit the wheels.
      I haven't gone to coilovers yet but I suspect it's worth it, assuming a nice set is in your budget. This completely eliminates the leaf springs.
      A tricky part about coilovers is that the high-end setups use remote reservoirs, which means you'll need to deal with mounting those. I'm leaning towards Penskes, but they are not all the same, Penske builds them based on the shop's parameters. You might want to call Sam Strano, he will customize them based on what you need.
      Don't forget about sway bars, those have a big impact too.
      Depending on your skill level, you may not need to worry about suspension upgrades right away.
      Also, don't forget the mods for engine reliability 😬

      @@JoshVanVeld Thanks for the reply!....I was looking at doing a full build with built motor, brakes, suspension, seats. I've done allot of track days and time attacks. Had a modified zl1 1le...but would like something lighter that is an NA motor. I probably would be served well with suspension upgrades.

      @@chrisb236 Sounds like it's going to be a killer build! I did a search for high-end coilovers for the C6Z on the Corvette Forum a while back and I believe JRZ, MCS, KW, and Penske were all on the list. Maybe Moton too? I feel like there wasn't a lot of info about the Ohlins for that application although they have a stellar reputation in general.

      @@JoshVanVeld We'll see what I actually do. I usually have a big mouth with no action with these sort of things because I'm too cheap sometimes. But if I went through buying the car I would actually do the whole thing. I've seen guys on the nurburgring run with the Ohlin's setup and they seem really fast and the car seems to settle really fast....not saying the ones you pointed out don't. I'll have to look more into the ones you suggested. As far as tires go...I might bet better off with 305/30/19s and 325/30/19s for the supercar 3 and supercar 3r tires. I really liked those on my zl1 1le. I will also look into the Nankang tires. Would rather have wider if I could. I have a feeling the modifications will be at least as much as the car itself, but I can't find any other car with the power and weight of the c6....unless I just go to a radical sr3 or sr10.. But then there is no option of driving to the track.

    Wasn't Ben the second Stig?

    • @JoshVanVeld
      @JoshVanVeld  Před 3 měsíci

      Correct! Although from what I understand the first one didn’t have a very long run. So in my mind Ben is the definitive Stig.
