    I test drove one last weekend, only on the blacktop a d without load. Yes of course it feels strong with no load, or course the suspension feels stiff and hard with no load... still a leaf spring ute with a 1 tonne capacity boot.I was impressed with the underbody protection and the out-of-harms-way placement of brake lines etc. only the new Nissan Navarra is comparable, the Colorado, Triton and Ford/Mazda are real let downs underneath with ridiculous exposure. What I object to in this review is regurgitating the manufacturer's spin without question. More suspension articulation you parrot... how much more, is it 2mm more or is it a significant increase - and how does it compare to the other vehicles in this class? We know the "bigger fuel tank" is all of 4 litres bigger - better than the previous model, but very marginally so. So let's not just swallow the promotional spin without question, what do you say?

    They don't sell these trucks here in Cali, rented plenty of hilux while traveling, I'm about to purchase a 2012 2.5 hilux for 18k (u.s.) in Nicaragua, love the 2016, but not enough to finance one, I can't imagine dogging these truck that cost me around 38k (u.s.) in really bad roads with gravel, rocks, sand, dust, branches hanging out the side, and don't forget crossing rivers where you can't see what's down there after a heavy down pour, giving hitch hikers rides where they always want to grab on to the paint section of the bed, well yeah, not a good life for a fancy truck, not sure about the 2016 hilux but a 2012-15 hilux can take what ever road Nicaragua has to offer

    unbreakable? the only way this would be unbreakable is if they went back to a much more agricultural platform with solid axles all round, steel bumpers and over engineered running gear. But everyone just wants a hilux to take the kids to school these days.

    • @steinwaygrande3971
      @steinwaygrande3971 Před 9 lety +7

      +gureno19 You hit the nail on the head. Give me a live front and rear axle and steel front and rear bumpers - hence the reason I will never get rid of my 80 series Landcruiser. No plastic crap all over it.. Solid steel bull bar with 12,000 Lb want winch and solid rear bumper with twin spare wheel and 250 litre diesel tank of fuel. Changed the six cylinder petrol for a 1HZ diesel and changed the front and rear diff ratios to suit the diesel engine.

    • @stokerkahles
      @stokerkahles Před 9 lety +1

      +gureno19 The Hilux is aimed at a different market, its really only a medium offroader. The designers have gone to refining the creature comforts more then the throw around the paddock, if you want that type of ruggedness the go the 70 series. I personal have a GX 78 made in 2012 and it is as rugged as I need it to be, the V8 is outstanding and it handles far and away better then the old 70 series.

    • @gureno19
      @gureno19 Před 9 lety +6

      stokerkahles couldnt agree with you more in regards to them separating those two segments, and obviously it was the right move as well with the amount of Sales they have picked up over the past decade. I just dislike how they market it the same way they did the old hilux, when in reality its now so far removed from its heritage.

      @mattheginger Před 8 lety +2

      +gureno19 People these days also want realistic ride comfort, fuel economy, and something that won't fold like a deck-chair in a crash! (like the old ones would), oh and some real world hp and towing ability. The old hilux's wouldn't have towed my old mans boat (legally or illegally)..

      Tacoma and Tundra are too big and heavy, the Hilux has a good level of potency and is much lighter, that is already a big obstacle, the American models could never reach the places that a Hilux would arrive.

    had the chance to test drive one. Its a camry on stilts. i find the auto is rather slow to shift, as you said if you put your foot down even the slightest in top gear, the auto likes to downshift. The manual shifts smoothly and is equally as comfortable. But it accelerates like a brick. Its nice offroad but its outpaced by most of its competitors. For my purposes i don't need the 4x4 and in my country this this is considerably more expensive than all its competitors and it was even outperformed by a Wingle. I'm a bit disappointed. But it pretty to look at.

      I have a far and use a Land Cruiser and it is amazing. I borrowed a Hilux for the farm for a few weeks and it was just out of this world. It is a simple nonsense machine.
      They are built to be hardcore off road vehicles.

    • @spydoorman7583
      @spydoorman7583 Před 8 lety +4

      +annubissl Maybe because you are not its intended market, it is meant to be abused and bashed like a workhorse versus the sedan-like ride and cheeky electronics of the new navarra and the ranger, in short its not a 'lifestyle' vehicle but a 4x4 rig.

    • @annubissl
      @annubissl Před 8 lety

      ok lets say your're right its touted as a 4x4 work rig. Still lackluster in my view. Now i will use pricing in my country's currency. There are no base models available yet.mid spec and fully loaded variants are the only thing the dealers have to offer right now. Top spec 4x4 Auto Trans Hilux costs about $390,000. OTD. approx $350,000 for the manual. Now 2.8 Holden/Chevy Colorado 4x4 fully loaded with all the bells and whistles runs approx $290,000 OTD. Fair enough the Navara with is rear coils wont last as a work mule. but my 4 year old Chevy has held its own against daily abuse as a work horse. even if i were to buy one brand spanking new again, it still pulls harder, runs faster and does all that i need it to do (if we're saying its not meant to cheeky gadget laden sedan), while costing less to buy and maintain. On a whole Toyota vehicles though good, are over priced in my country. And for the supposed "king of the road" the new Hilux has been a disappointment in face of competitors. Maybe they'll get it right in the next iteration, but currently the competition ( at least in my country) has more to offer for a better price.

  • @MrKoosler
    @MrKoosler Před 8 lety

    Gotta a feeling that the Triton might be the segment winner this time around. I think the Navara will be overpriced with the Toyota and Nissan have the tendency to not be reliable. BT50 and Ranger even though they are receiving and have received facelifts is still previous gen and the 3.2 is lazy regarding the size it is and the power it puts out. The Amarok is also a bit aged and previous gen and with that said overpriced for what you get and the Isuzu it is a great pickup but also aged and aged the most of all. The only major thing they updated in the last 20 odd years are the looks and size. The 2.4GLS Triton looks like a winner for me so far reasons for my opinion is the price compared to the others it is way below the price of the others, Even though the towing capacity and load bay is lower and smaller than that of the competition it is not that big a factor since you will most probably never need to haul a load of 3.5 tons with your "Sunday" pickup since the main factor for the luxury Double cabs are having a little bit of a workhorse on your family vehicle. The selling points arount the 2.4GLS is also good this time around with the paddleshift and better feel in the interior as the previous gen had a plastic feel all over it and lets be honest looked ugly everywhere except at the front where the new model looks gorgeous all round.

    People of my generation do not understand Bert Newtons Meters or its Kill `o Watts. How about talking horsepower and ft/lbs of torque as well so that we the unfortunate are baffled by those who spruik the lingo that we dont understand.Never has so much been spoken by so few to those who know so little. A for being quiter then the old 3.0 litre engine, which in reality is or was the Toyota Surf engine which was pretty much bullet proof and didnt need common rail diesel which is a big Negative for serious off roaders who spend a great deal of time in the bush. The slightest bit of dirt in a common rail diesel is a recipe for a catastrophic engine failure is all to common. The interior is good, but the rear seats need more legroom and the back of the seat is to upright. With so little articulation a diff lock front and rear is a must. LED running lights are too bright for daylight use.l Bloody infuriating when those vehicles are coming towards you in broad daylight. Ford Everest might just topple Toyota Hilux.

      That's because most of our countries does not have the quality of diesel required for those engines (euro 4 or 5)

      The US is pretty much the only place on earth you can't get a Hilux. You have Tacoma which is bigger and Tundra which is bigger still.

    • @osmiumgus8025
      @osmiumgus8025 Před 9 lety +2

      Incorrect. Your Chevy Colorado is a USA assembled version of our Thai manufactured Holden Colorado (Holden being our local subsidiary of GMC). Both of which are badge engineered Isuzu DMax, with adaptations to meet local market expectations.
      You don't have the 2.8 L diesel until 2016, we have had it since 2012 release of the vehicle - only available here as a common rail, direct jnjection diesel. But we have front dics brakes and rear drums, your Chevy has disc brakes front and rear. So the refinement of the 2.8L duramax diesel and associated NVH improvements have already been made from experience elsewhere.
      The Hilux is reasonably equivalent to your Tacoma, Hilux is what the rest of the world gets and it is superior to Tacoma.
      We don't have your full size utes, partly because they are manufactured in America for the USA market (consequence of your protectionist nanny state), we would love them but over in Australia we drive on the correct side of the road, and your steering wheel is on the wrong side of the vehicle, so we have to convert them to right hand driving position to meet international driving rules. One day you will pick up the metric system and driving on the left side of the road and the world will live in bliss. But that will be long after the demise of the fuss size pickup, so who cares.
