I think it is so awesome that you have Blakely sitting across the way and eating when Beckham is eating. I have worked with a few students who have feeding issues and oral aversions. One of my students in the past not only would gag/vomit if he is given a new food or a different texture but also gags/vomits when he sees or smells certain foods and almost always gags/vomits when others are eating around him. During snacks and meals he has to eat either facing the wall or with a divider between him and others who are eating. If he had started watching other ears and had seen/smelled other foods being cooked or just sitting out at a younger age it would have been beneficial to him. Snacks and meal times are social times and at school we use snacks and meals to work not only on feeding and life skills but also social and language skills. Unfortunately because this student has such a strong negative reaction to foods and others eating he will sometimes miss out on the social aspect of meals because he has to be separated from the group (he will not eat and/or will vomit which then makes mealtimes aversive). Throughout the years we have worked with him and now he will join the group when we make most snacks (he will only use utensils and will gag if things get on his skin) and can also sit with some classmates when they are eating dry snacks (meals are still a struggle). It was difficult to get to this point so I get excited when I see parents who have kids with g-tubes and/or oral aversions sitting with parents, siblings, family, or friends while others eat around them. Even when I have students who do not eat by mouth I encourage families to bring their chairs up to the table during mealtimes so they still can still be a part of the social aspect of eating. I also encourage parents to put things like utensils, plates, cups, etc. on the tray (plastic ones of course) so they can be a part of the whole experience and explore items used for feeding. If your kids don’t have food allergies and if they don’t have aspiration or chocking risks you can put some food items on the tray for them to explore with their hands. This allows them to see new foods, smell new foods, and explore new textures which might lead to more successful oral feeds or if they never eat by mouth will prevent them from gagging/vomiting when they see or smell new foods. This is especially helpful if you and your family like to go out to restaurants and don’t want kids to get sick or become upset/anxious when new foods and smells are all around them. For kiddos who can’t explore food on the tray you can give them different sensory toys or even fake food for them to play with along with plastic utensils and other items so they don’t feel “left out” during family meals or when in a restaurant.

Go Beckham Also when he crawled almost all the way to the couch I was waiting to see if he was waiting to see if he was going to try and pull himself at least part of the way onto the couch! I believe that he will. In the beginning of the video when Beckham was crying that was his way of say mom I am a hungry boy! I love seeing him so happy when he in the gait trainer! @juliehowman3912 Před 2 lety +1

Beckham has really progressed and is showing evidence of wanting to be in his gait trainer now. His arms are also better placed and at times he is actually taking hold of them which is fantastic. It won’t be long before Beckham will be rolling to sitting. He really lifted his torso when turning to engage with Blakely. I was wondering if you could try to make a game for both of them where you have Beckham ‘chase’ Blakely, as then he will be focused on her movements and learn by copying her? it would also give him more therapy under the guise of play? I found during my teaching career, children naturally want to learn, and they do that best through play, and mimicking. They also learn best from their peers which is why you will oftentimes see teachers seating the weaker students with the stronger ones. This serves two purposes, one it affords the opportunity of mimicry but also it presents the more advanced pupil from getting bored. The stronger child rises to the challenge of empowering the less advanced child to gain the particular skill they are imparting. It also trains the child to be aware of when others may require help and their capacity to be the helper which in turn develops self confidence.
