The stanzas quote the short poem “Völuspá hin skamma” (“Short Völuspá”) as reported in “Gylfaginning” in the Prose Edda. Refrains list out all the names of the runes present in Elder Futhark alphabet (which is also the alphabet I used for my transcription). Runes had a sacred use in Nordic religion: Norse sorcerers, seeresses and warlocks worked their magic with the runes and Odin himself hung to the ash Yggdrasil for nine nights to learn the secrets of the runes and gain the right to be runemaster. To every rune is associated a meaning, usually a word starting by the same letter, to which their magical power was linked. In my translation I opted for a translation of the runes’ names, instead of simply copying them, but keep in mind that most of these names can have more than one translation, and in most cases said translation is not certain [the word “rune” itself means “secret”, after all].
Here is the full list:
Fehu: ᚠ [f] - wealth, cattle
Uruz: ᚢ [u/v] - rain, aurochs, dross, water
Þurisaz: ᚦ [þ/ð] - giant
Ansuz: ᚨ [a] - Ás god, oak, ash
Raido: ᚱ [r] - ride (=”journey by horse”)
Kenaz: ᚲ [k] - ulcer, maybe torch
Gebo: ᚷ [g] - gift
Wunjo: ᚹ [w] - joy
Hagalaz: ᚺ/ᚻ [h] - hail
Naudiz: ᚾ [n] - hardship, need
Isa: ᛁ [i] - ice
Jera: ᛃ [j] - year, harvest
Eihwaz: ᛇ [ï/æ] - yew
Perþo: ᛈ [p] - unknown meaning
Algiz: ᛉ [z] - elk, yew
Sowilo: ᛊ/ᛋ [s] - sun
Tiwaz: ᛏ [t] - Týr
Berkano: ᛒ [b] - birch
Ehwaz: ᛖ [e] - horse
Mannaz: ᛗ [m] - man, human
Laguz: ᛚ [l] - water, waterfall, lake or leek
Ingwaz: ᛜ/ᛝ [ŋ] - Yngvi
Oþalaz: ᛟ [o] - heritage, estate
Dagaz: ᛞ [d] - day
“Valföðr” (“father of the slain”) is one of Odin’s many epithets.
Vitkar were magicians in Norse societies, especially dedicated to runic magic.
Any suggestion and/or observation is warmly welcome.
The lyrics are pronounced by singer Justine Galmiche as modern Icelandic, instead of using Old Norse pronunciation: e.g. she sings “á” as the Icelandic diphthong /au/ instead of the Old Norse /a:/ or the double “l” as /tl/.

It's been a while since I read anything THIS true.
Very true
In ancient Norse culture this song would be considered an act of magic given that speaking the names of each rune individually is kind of like cast a spell because you would be calling the aspects if each rune like Fehu’s aspects are wealth good fortune and harvest
Insightful
And as a Norse man this song gets me so fired up it's awesome I'm finding skald and wardruna are two of my faves

Omggg everything fits.!!! Rúnes have alphabets which are called Svarthfda. And she's singing out the Elder Futhark Letters one by one. Wow
Actually Svarthfda is a place (the land of the dwarves, I think? I may be wrong). The Futhark was named from the first six letters of the Elder Futhark: Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raido, Kenaz.
@@chloej1611 You're very close! Svartálfheim is the land of the Dwarves.

Just hope Ubisoft don't chance my people history in the Assassins Creed Valhalla game and disrespect our people. We were vikings and our history is build on sacrifice, blood and unity in Scandinavia. 🇩🇰
@Peter Poulsen unity of Scandinavia? Not quite, Scandinavia was _never_ unified during the Viking era. Quite the opposite: Viking populations spread and diversified across a vast variety of places, settling down as far as Turkey, not to mention how the modern name "Russia" is derived of the word "Rus", old Finnish word for "Sweden/Swedish" (still nowadays called "Ruotsi" in Finnish). Not to mention, the whole Asatro, including the concept of Valhalla itself, is _not_ native to Scandinavia at all: it was imported by populations who migrated to Scandinavia from the Middle East, hence it's derived of Proto-Indo-European mythology and developed through Germanic folklore.
Dude exactly what is going on with me rn
Understanding the runes is what makes this so magical the words are deeper then the lyrics or what the English translations of the runes say when it can't come up with English translations being wrong because that rune doesnt have a current translation for that rune it gets deeper.
And its beautiful only if you fully understand the runes.
Btw its elder futhark look it up read it learn it then rewatch this video and tell me you cant cry. It really is magical.

Finally I know this song about .. is beautiful
G, X were used with the same rune (Gebo) Therefore Gebo could mean either G or X.
V, W were one rune. (Wunjo)
Example; Vodka (English) Wodka (German) V and W is pronounced as the same. German transcriptions of slavic words are written with W in german, while being written with V in english.
Runes (the pronunciation and spelling) varied with the different germanic cultures and locations.
German and English originate from the same proto-germanic language.
This is why there are many similarities between these two languages.

When you find out you’re 6% Norwegian and 18% Irish
Elder Futhark is purely Germanic my boi. The Irish still had some of their own cool Gaelic/Celtic shit goin on tho
What do you mean by "purely Germanic"? If you mean it was made and used exclusively by the Germanics, this is not true. Futhark is almost certainly based and developed from Italic writing systems, especially Etruscan alphabet :en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etruscan_alphabet#Letters
These writing systems subsequently traveled to Northern Europe on the Amber Road, where they were re-adapted to Old Norse dialect.
@@FlamSparks Actually that's up for debate:
european-origins.com/2020/08/18/elder-futhark/
I just meant that the Elder Futhark writing system itself was purely Germanic because no other culture used it. Sure, Futhark could've been inspired from Estruscan or Phoenician sources, but it's set as a different writing system altogether for a reason. But hell, if you want to argue about the originality of the writing systems, we could go all the way back to cuneiform script from ancient Mesopotamia.
@@svefnhnuturthorgeirsson As a university student of Germanic philology, I can tell you that the debate follows mainly 3 hypothesis (Greek, Latin, and Etruscan origin), but the Etruscan origin is by far the most credited. I was simply arguing the "purely" definition you gave because it's not very historically accurate.
@@FlamSparks Like I said though, I meant "purely" as the Germanics were the only people to use Futhark. I didn't mean to say that the origin itself was purely Germanic as in they just went "Hey, you know what? Let's make a fuckin alphabet." Lol cuz as far as I know, cuneiform is the only writing system that's thought to be completely original and even then, I feel it has some origins in cave paintings and such.

What do you mean by that?
@@FlamSparks Like how do you get it from norse runes to English? I'm curious on how your process works
I study Old Norse, I translate it to English
Most people in the Scandinavian countries gets to learn the alphabet in school. It’s part of our education. Not everyone focuses or remember it though. But if there we are interested we can always continue to learn about it. Some words are very similar to the language we have today. So we can understand some of the words in the song even without reading or translating them. But of course, if someone doesn’t understand the Scandinavian languages it might be more difficult and requires more effort.

Sadly, it seems its the Wrong Set of Runes for old Norse. You are using the Elder Futhark, the younger Futhark would be more fitting here. I know its harder to Read but prolly more accurate. You are also using the Rune Uruz for the V sound wich is wrong if i recall right. Wunjo would be the right Rune here i believe.
I know, but since this whole song is about Elder Fuþark, I decided to go for that set instead
@@FlamSparks Yeah that surprised me a bit TBH. An old Norse Song about Elder Futhark :D But its still one of my favourites of the Band.
Yeah, the group doesn't seem to be so studied in Old Norse, they often come up with weird things (from grammar to pronunciation) x)
Hmm you think Wunjo would be the right rune for V? I'm quite honestly not sure, tbh....
@@FlamSparks It is the closest Sound to V in my humble Opinion. But yeah Skald also uses very Fantasy costumes. They are a bit more out to please the Eye than being historicly correct.
Well, it's not actually true that a W's sound is always a /v/, just think how it's pronounced in English. /u/ and /v/ have very borderline sounds, and in fact they share a common development in the history of many languages. F, U, V, Y and W were all written with a same letter in the Phoenician alphabet, which is one of the oldest and most influential alphabets in the European history. In Latin, the letter V originally indicated the sound /u/, while later on it came to indicate both /u/ and /v/. In phonetics, [w] corresponds neither to /u/ nor /v/: while [u] is a vowel and [v] a consonant, [w] is a semivowel. Its ambiguous nature explains why its sound keeps shifting between /u/ and /v/, and also shows why these two sounds keep exchanging place one with the other throughout the history of so many languages. Most info we have about the rune Wunjo comes from its Fuþorc descendant Wynn, which most surely had the sound of semivowel [w], so I would tend to attach the same sound to Proto-Norse. This being said, it's true that Old Norse might have originally used the letter V to indicate the sound /w/, since the sound /v/ came later (especially from intervocalic /b/) and Old Norse didn't use the letter W. So you might be right on that.
Complimenti, hai le palle ragazzo.
Pardon?
