You mean when people drive within the legal speed limit, as required by the law, it provokes other people to lose their minds and take stupid risks for minimal gains? BTW, I think we should keep the 30kph urban zones and just derestrict the motorways. You want to make up time, bash out 300kph in your Audi on the road that was built for it. A retiring police officer a few years ago was given the honour of giving a farewell speech to the media for a lifetime of service. He started as a Traffic Officer that got amalinated into the Police force after 8 to 10 years. In his speech he stated that when a Traffic Officer the policy was only the worst 10% of stops were to result in a fines as stops were an educational event. However once they were amalinated the policy changed to EVERY TRAFFIC VIOLATION WAS A CRIME & HAD TO RECEIVE A FINE & driver education went out the door. He also stated quoting "That despite denials from heads of policing, THERE IS A QUOTA SYSTEM & police officer on traffic duty are REQUIRED to issue a set amount of tickets per shift."
Road Safety Policing IS NOT about improving road safety - IT IS REVENUE COLLECTING!!! Lowering speed limits DOES NOT REDUCE accidents BUT DOES INCREASE TICKETS ISSUED.

the driver training in this country is shocking. people are taught how to "not get into trouble" which will never work you need to put them in trouble in a controlled environment and teach them how to get out of trouble. this will majorly reduce the fright/shock in troubled situations and prevent some accidents and reduce the damage in others

    • @nathshaw
      @nathshaw Před 15 dny +3

Fully agree. See my comment / suggestion about using driving simulators to do this, taking a leaf out of the airline industry. Simulating a child stepping out in front of them, and them hitting that child again and again, until they master the skills needed to avoid the accident... would hopefully make people more aware of how useless they are. Also might instill some muscle memory on what you're actually supposed to do - rather than just panic.
For my part, when I was a kid we used to get cars that failed WOF and fang around the farm in them. What blew my mind back then, was after something went wrong... eg: clipping a hole in the paddock hidden in the grass, how much longer it took to regain control and stop the car, than it normally would. Ever since then, I've always driven as though there was a 'hidden hole' in the road around the corner... Does that make me a slower driver? No, not usually (unless weather/road conditions dictate), what it does do, is to make me concentrate, and be super aware as to what's going on around me.

Road speed changes were not done well. Some make sense and some do not. Some councilers have no clues, but good at talking nonsense and over spending. Some speed humps are violent at the suggested 30kph. Example Lincoln rd & Barrinton st Ch Ch . Some commercials and delivery vans at 30kph will have there loads lifting off the deck violently, they need about 2kph to stop load lift. Overdone speed humps are a disaster. Many drivers are not confident especially on motorways. The wire barriors on Chch southern motorway are constantly being broken. Some drivers can't drive in a straight line, some are freaked out on motorways, some slow down for gently curves that have no speed reduction sign. I really wonder if our driving instrutors are not very good. Cell phones are a massive problem. Easy fixed get caught instant loss of license and car impounded, that will wake them up to their law breaking. Many drivers need need more training by people with real driving abilities. Are drivers tested in heavy motorway traffic. And slow impeeding drivers are a massive problem, they stretch out big gaps in heavy traffic denying others a chance to clear intersections, these slow impeeding drivers only speed up when the lights change they are good at running the lights. Trucks many travel at 100kph and a little more, this seems to be tolerated by Police.

True, I knew one of the traffic division inspectors and his statements were basically that even though the slow drivers obstructing the traffic flow and not letting people pass were breaking the law and creating a well known pattern of serious hazzards - they were not to be pulled over as the risk of stopping them especially if the unit had to turn around to do so was too high.
Note that it is the risk to the officer that was at stake, not the road users being offeded against - the same maneuvers were to be done for drivers exceeding the speed limit and the risk passed onto the other users - ie we had to make it safe for them to do them.
The risk of other users being frustrated and doing some stupid would then be grounds for them to be stopped and ticketed for what ever they did - the slow driver as to still be let go and create more Hazzards and ticketing opportunities.

It has nothing to do with knowing how to drive, and everything to do with the infrastructure. Every country that I have visited in Europe had better infrastructure than NZ, and the speed limits on roads reflected that, roads that are 80km/h limit in Europe would be 100km/h here, 80km/h would be 60km/h. I've been living in Europe for 4 years and only saw a handful of sign-posted corner speed limits, and only on dual carriageway 120km/h roads down to 110 or 100 for a corner you could easily take at 120km/h.
Because of all of this, if you want to get from A->B, you can usually do so on dual-carriageway roads at 120km/h, any time you have to travel on slower roads no-one seems to be in a rush because the alternative is a nice and safe fast road. Also has the side benefit of never hearing about a road-toll every-time a long weekend comes along, Ireland has had a torrid year in terms of road deaths, and yet with a similar population is nearly 50 deaths behind the road toll of NZ for the year. I was even nervous driving in Spain but the roads between Granada and Portugal were again far better than what we have in NZ.

I 100% agree with everything Greg has said, especially the road side and centre line 'safety' improvements that are actually making the roads less safe in many instances! You can't fine slow drivers for driving slow, there are a lot of reasons for why people drive slow, confidence in their own ability, learning to drive, the elderly and so on, so just be patient, but drivers that are driving slow and being inconsiderate in the process is an issue that does need to be addressed and they should be ticketed for that inconsideration. Trying to force slow drivers to drive faster is only ever going to result in more incidents. I remember a famous motorcycle racer that went on to be a commentator, his comment related to track racing, but applies everywhere else as well, his comment was "you can't teach a slow rider to ride fast, but you can teach a fast rider how not to fall off", that very same adage applies to everyday driving on public roads, only it isn't to prevent them from falling off, it is to prevent them from having accidents as a consequence of a lack of basic driving skills that they have never been taught.

My understanding of accidents around schools is that they're mostly caused by parents picking their kids up and they happen because the parent is focused on looking for their child and don't see other children who stray out into the road. Which also means that these accidents are occurring at lower speeds already as anyone who has driven near a school at these times can attest. You cannot drive fast due to the roads being congested.
Given that the stats show Maori and Pacific Island children are more likely to be run over it suggests a lack of awareness within these communities about road safety. That is where the efforts should be put instead of useless blanket speed limits. Another common way for children to be hit is when playing on their driveway behind a vehicle which then backs out and the driver can't see the child.

We have had decades of propaganda on speed being the problem, when it is the solution. This raises eyebrows but what problem are you trying to solve? Why do you use a car? Why use something that exceeds your own bodies speed limit? Because they are fast. The problem isnt the speed, it is that at times, through different mechanisms but almost always through inattention and stupidity folks try to put 2 items in the same space at the same time. Remove collisions and you remove all road deaths, reduce speed and you reduce the impact of the collision (only 1 person dies instead of 2). Work on the skills and distractions, stop looking at your speedo (just a tip, it wont save you), and start looking down the road not your phone or the immediate vehicle in front of you. Plan, buy time, consider what you are doing. Then the speed is irrelevant.

So why hasn’t this area been re opened to 100 when people can’t cross because of multiple physical barriers yet half a K down the road it’s back to 100 but the concrete barriers aren’t in that section? The expressway was built with single lane bridges and the area from Pakowhai to Taradale is a choke point in both directions as the volume of traffic in that short section is huge. The new round about out at Awatoto was built closer to the sea than the road was and has already been flooded and it hasn’t been done more than a year. The new median cheese graters on the expressway prevent emergency services from over taking or being able to do a U turn when needed for urgent response. Why do you get a speed change up after a town then have to go back down for a sign posted slow corner a hundred meters or so later?

More often than not the driver is impaired, driving reckless, or not driving to the conditions and it is that not necessarily the speed that causes the accident, the speed just impacts the severity.

Hi guys. I totally agree with Murph on all the points he raised. It wasn’t until I had to become aware of my own bad habits when I became an AA driving instructor ( 4 years). The amount of driving impatience and driving with an entitled attitude with total disregard to the road rules that’s around, is ridiculous. One example of how lowering speed limits that I can mention is when for about 10 years I travelled on return trips from the Hutt to the Kapiti coast via the Paekākāriki hill road. It started at 80kph and ended up at 50kph. Every trip I made, I was behind people that even at 50kph, were driving slower than that limit and crossing the centreline when negotiating corners. Yes speed is a contributing factor in accidents but it isn’t the primary cause. Driver competence, lack of attention and total disregard/ignorance of why the rules are the rules ( which includes drunk driving obviously ) are the root causes. 😊

If you go back in history there is some very good evidence that slowing down works. In the 1970's the speed limit was reduced from 60 mph to 50 mph with the idea of reducing fuel consumption during the oil shock. When the speed limit was returned to 60 mph and the stats were reviewed it was found that the road toll during the limited speed period was reduced by 50% then returned to the pre speed restriction levels when the restriction was removed.
Greg is right in that we dont train our drivers properly. Once you have your license you never have to look at a road code, ever!

NZ Road Police encourage dangerous driving. Excessive speed in the wrong context is bad, but there are many more factors in dangerous driving. Unfortunately Road Policing is run by wildly incompetent people.

For those that think speed is not a factor look at the USA with its 80mph highway speeds. Derelict big rigs, utes towing two trailers,, bike riders with no helmets all at 80mph and all with a God given right not to use indicators. The USA has two and a half times the fatality rate of Australia.

as a motorbike rider and commercial driver in Auckland here's things I notice on the daily
even if the speed limit lowers most people don't give a fuck (THIS IS FOR YOU TAILGATERS)
the phone or passenger conversation is more important than paying attention
when in the wrong, either don't look (if you don't see them, they aint there... right?) or just get angry cos they called you out on your bullshit and road rage it up..
in-attention causes far more accidents than speed (but if they going fast ofc its gonna be worse)
red lights are optional unless camera or police are there
most commercial drivers are piss poor, if your a commercial driver you should be better than other drivers around you, not pissing them off with stupid antics
most of these people should be on the bus not in a car

Back in the 70s’ and 80’s the speed limit guide was five pages which included a full page diagram and was easily understood by everyone now its 61 pages of complication and just a gravy-train for consultants because it’s way too complicated for an overworked council engineer to get their heads around. Back in the old days limits were set by a small group of Traffic Engineers at the MoT/LTSA working in conjunction with Police, the Local body concerned (representing residents) (or Transit in the case of a state highway) and the AA representing general motorists. All technically competent and understanding the process and objectives now there is a cast of thousands with every one who drives being an expert. Result chaos and complete inconsistency across the country, how on earth are motorist supposed to know what the limit is without constantly looking for signs ? It’s a shambles with some ridiculous limits , just take a look at central Auckland for the giant cluster fk limits with no consistency to anywhere else in NZ .

I would like to take a few lessons from the airline industry, where pilots have to practice for things going wrong in a simulator, so that if something DOES go wrong, they know what to do.
For driving, that'd mean simulator throwing up things like, child running out in front of car, tyre blow out, car coming the opposite direction crossing white-line, oil spill, etc.
Drivers would need to be trained how to and practice responding to these things in the simulator, and pass a test showing they can appropriately respond.
And just like the airline industry, we should expect people to have to re-train regularly. Maybe once every 2 years (or similar), drivers would have to spend maybe 2 hours in the simulator, else lose their license. Develop and deploy these around the country, so they're accessible. If we did it right, we'd probably be able to sell them internationally too. Shouldn't be overly hard, given the incredible things people can do with computer games nowadays.

We don't need lower speed limits. What we do need is better driver education and training. Advanced driving courses for learners should be provided and subsidized. Also immigrants wanting to transfer their home country licence to a NZ licence should be made to go through the whole system properly if they are immigrating from a high risk country instead of paying some dodgy person a few hundred bucks to get a bit of paperwork to say they are fully qualified to drive to NZ road rules and conditions.

The government and council want votes so will do the thing that costs the least amount votes. Seems speed limits cost the least votes. NZ needs proper driver training and education. Not just new drivers but all drivers

I'm hearing you Murf, My son has just completed his advanced driving course. It a joke! He spent all his energy trying to piss the stiff at the front of the room off. He had zero respect for him or the course. Sadly nor did I. They taught him nothing. My son is just like me at that age but I had 80hp he has 400whp in his tricked out BMW 335i. You can't stop them so all I could do was teach him.
I traveled with him to Auckland last weekend and I kid you not he was more alert and better anticipated the zombies than me. He has been driving just 12 months on his restricted and not long turned 17. I truly believe the average driver is a complete moron!
We need to start teaching the kids properly. I took the 335 out too a road I know well and let him have at it. Yes he was getting it wrong at first and we got one corner way wrong but we weren't going that fast but then he started to get it and balancing the car under braking etc and next thing you know we are effortlessly nailing that bit of road. He was relaxed and chill and loving it. Way inside the envelope of the car. It is not hard to teach so why don't we? We worry about there hands at 10 and 2 FFS but not how to drive. Makes absolutely no sense to me! EX voluntary firefighter and seen some mind numbing dumb accidents but I never scraped a boy racer off the road, not once! Food for thought.

Driver education is key, people are being killed or injured when they have an accident simply because the have no idea what to do when a situation arises. Lowering the speed limit only makes it worse due to frustration. If drivers are not confident to travel at the speed limit, put over & let other drivers pass or take a back road. The safety star rating means nothing, it doesn't matter how many airbags you put in a coke can you're still gunna die !!!

Does anyone notice the lack of knowledge and skills of drivers?
    Speed can’t fix stupid!!
Greater skills and knowledge are important.
Why do we force people to go learn skills at various degrees of schools and apprenticeships. But don’t care about teaching driving skills?
Went to get my license renewed. An eye test a bit of paper and of course may money. I got a license for 10 years. No checking if I got the knowledge or skills. No checking to see if I got complacent. And I’m good for 10 more years.
Needs more regular actual checks on skills and knowledge.
