In this Misirlou guitar lesson, I will show you to play this Dick Dale classic note-for-note.
We will be using standard tuning.
The most obvious technique used by Dick Dale throughout "Misirlou" is the rapid fire tremolo picking. In order to accomplish this and also make the guitar tone brighter, he chose to pick very close to the bridge.
Picking very close to the bridge makes the string feel tighter, which in turn can make it a bit easier to rapidly pick the string.
You will need a lot of endurance to make it through the entire song. The most important thing to remember is to try and keep your right hand wrist and forearm as relaxed as possible. That is very difficult to do because the picking is almost non-stop. "Misirlou" is a great exercise in staying relaxed during fast picking passages.
There is also a short chord section where the guitar takes a rhythm guitar approach underneath a trumpet solo. I will show you the chords used during this section of the song and it gives a chance for you to relax your picking hand a bit.
So I hope you enjoy learning this surf rock guitar workout!
Carl... - Hudba
I swear, Carl, no matter what random song pops into my head, you've got a lesson on it, and it's the best lesson on it on CZcams! Thank you so much.

@@mhdshl8502 No man they don't have the metric system in France they wouldn't know what a quarter pounder is.
if you nail this, many metal songs will look easy to you
This was my first rock riff I learned

Sean Ridner agreed it’s just gotta be that way
I tried this on acoustic and I almost broke the strings
I play on acoustic no problem
AMS_Cult _ you probably already know this now but turn your pick sideways and it’ll be way easier to get more speed and sound
I broke a pick
@@rehaanmahmood4568 I play with .16 it's no problem
I play with a titanium washer, I cut my guitar in half.
I think the actual picking isn't just a steady tremolo, but that's definitely a good start and probably all I'm willing to learn as a beginner-intermediate.
It isn't. Dale had chops so he fucked with it while going
@@ineedsaltplease620Doing that, in 1962 no less, isn’t just chops.
Its pure mastery. 🎉🎉😅😂❤❤ I
its actually harder to strum than learn the fingering pattern lmao
I just used a really thin pick and it made it easy

@@synothesia2326 i have broken many a thin pick on this song. ...but really, that's the best way
And to think dick dale used 16- 60 gauge guitar strings and used heavy picks
I am literally using a nylon string 📈

my mom was a personal friend of dick dale, had to try to figure out a version of this by ear when i was a kid! thanks for a more complete version!!

Fours years on. Did you manage to get there with this in the end? As an oldie myself, I’m looking forward to the challenge; particularly since I can’t hold a pick like most guitarists do!
This song is like an exercise. A good one.
“That Is A Tasty Burger”
Is that from Pulp Fiction?
@@skyline2601 i’m pretty sure it is

lol this is crazy! I just heard it in pulp fiction and wanted to learn so i came on youtube and saw that you just posted a lesson for it! XD haha
Dick Dale - Rest In Peace.
Dude i learned it yes
Great! Congrats! It is a fun one
Dick Dale. What a unique and important contribution to the history or rock guitar. A left handed player that played a right handed guitar completely upside down. Strings included (skinny E on top). Signature style. Instantly recognizable.
I'm so grateful for you doing these lessons
Thanks, man! And thanks for showing the end goal at the beginning! I cannot stand guys who lecture and then you don't know fi you even want to watch the video. Yours is great!
Ive been requesting this song for a couple days but Sober by Tool is what I would like to see. Want to see if there's any people who agree with me lol

Great video mate.
Hey Carl, fantastic lesson! You are probably the number one, go to teacher on CZcams! Your break everything down into detail! I have a request, can you do a tutorial on shadow play by Rory Gallagher please? Thank you :)
Very awesome....Bravo!
Honestly one of the best guitar tutorials I’ve seen on CZcams. Great job man
thank you por that lessons, are good!...
thanks a ton man
rip when you have no reverb on your amp. guess i need a reverb pedal
Pulp Fiction best movie ever!
Your so awesome cant say how more awesome you are
The strumming is what gets me man
Dick Dale, R.I.P.
It sounds so clean on that high E string
God bless this man
Hey, Carl! What string gauge you use on this Fender guitar?
Holly shit this is the best finger exercise ever. Thank you carl now i can play really fast.
I love ya man, you didnt seem to be too excited doing this one though! :)
hahaha i dont know why but this song makes me laugh and think of surfing, great video as always
I slowed down the recording to see the strumming for the second part and it’s ⬇️⬇️⬆️⬆️⬇️ because he didn’t explain the pattern. Hope that helps someone
You may be right but it’s probably easier to do alternate strumming
There’s actually ANOTHER version from the Greatest Hits 1961-1976 album that you should do. THAT version was later covered for Guitar Hero II.
Could you please do I got a name by Jim Croce. Thanks and love the lessons
Darude sandstorm
Tysm man
Hello Carl can you play the tornado of souls and the solo hangar 18 megadeth please
Sounds cool with distortion too!
Thanks, love this channel. Here's one, one of my favorites, can you do a video for Master Song by Leonard Cohen??
Stealers Wheel, Stuck in the middle with you please
This was the song that taught me how to speed pick
2:23 doesn‘t he actually through in an extra lower note before the long note there (a lot like happens later in the song as well)? At least in some of the recordings it sounds like that.
The Call of Ktulu would be a fantastic lesson
Wondering if you could get the newer versions he did with the extra added guitar parts
lov it.
Would you do a lesson for the Jack by acdc? I can't find a proper lesson for the solo..
I taught myself some of this song but this sounds better and is the real version.
Thanks for the great lesson!!!! And a correction that has to be made..... Misirlou is a GREEK folk song that has its origines in the area of Minor Asia (the eastern shore of Turkey) and Dick Dale just made it known worldwide by copying it!!!
I mean, this is more of a cover than a straight up copy
Copy?! He never claimed being the author. Just listen the traditional version of the song. Sounds totally different.
Theres always one
ΣΤΕΛΙΟΣ ΣΕΡΕΤΗΣ it’s actually an Egyptian tune lmao
Dude, ancient Greeks and Turks didn't have electric guitars. Almost all music is built by the young on the backs of the old. Dick Dale isn't even a very good guitar player, but he impacted an entire genre of surf music so you have to respect that.
Hey Carl! I know that this is unrelated to this video, but I was wondering if you could do a lesson for "Big Empty" by Stone Temple Pilots.
Could you tell me how to set my guiatr and amp settings to get that exact sound? Thanks.
Jawbreaker Lots and lots of Reverb
A fender guitar. But to get that wonderful authentic sound you need a Fender amp that will give you that beautiful clean shimmering sound with the reverb ramped up. Could add a little tremolo.
And I just broke my guitar pick
It's a hijaz scale on E the whole octave
That's interesting I always knew this scale as the "gypsy major" scale or like "phrygian dominant sharp 7th" but now I look it up "hijaz kar" is the same collection of notes
Its the Turkish scale lol
Could you perty please do a guitar arrangement of Pieces by Red? It's a beautiful song.
I fucking love you man
I was watching this on 1.5x without realizing it and wondering how tf you were playing so damn fast 😂
Thanku Carl......
what about jason becker "the end of the beginning", and btw cool lesson
can you do pipeline
you and Tarantino are gods
is bild fur the best is lesson very god tankil
Dick Dale learned guitar by playing a right handed guitar upside down and backwards with the high E string on top and the low E on the bottom. Classic guitar piece. Every guitar player should have this one in their tool box.
Interesting trivia, thanks!
This doesn't make sense lol from what you said it must have been a left handed guitar he just randomly found
You sure you're not thinking of Jimi?

What pedal did you use for this riff?
will sunshine of your love solo ever happen?
Carl, just wanted to ask what thickness pick do you generally use and what thickness have you used for this one......if i use a thick pick (1.5) it's difficult to keep up and if i use a thin one then it makes a lot of chicky chicky sound.
Use a 1.2 or 1
nowadays i use tortex 1mm.....its kinda good for Metallica type songs but for Misirlou i found 0.76 comfortable
Thx goes good with my nardcore 🤙🏼
L love this fast passed guitar,,,, Heart Of The Sunrise " is another... try it...
Can any one mention the amp head settings please?

Good I like
do some Alter Bridge PLEASE!!
pleazz do the overkill from MOTORHEAD
Hi Carl! Great lesson and cool song. I was just wondering what kind of pick you use and string guage you use? I use Ernie Ball Power Slinky strings but that's cause I mostly play Metallica, AC/DC, Nirvana, etc.
Thanks. :)
nice
My guitar doesnt sound right i have a skp 62 btw how do you make it sound like that?
Just crank.the reverb as Carl says !!
My amp doesnt have a reverb i think thats why it doesnt sound so good
Maybe you need a reverb pedal bro...
Or buy multi effect processor you can get various sounds through it...
