As a child in the early 70s, I was always moved by this song though being young I couldnt process why I reacted to it. Now I see that it reflected my council estate background and described the lives of people I knew. The gentleness and tenderness of the emotions in the song contrasted with the grey and sometimes threatening environment I lived in.
I know exactly how you feel, it releases so many sad emotions for me when I hear it..aswell with The little boy that santa Claus forgot, I can always remember them 2 songs my mam singing to me..😢..
I am American and had never heard of this lovely lady or this beautiful haunting song. If she had come a lot to the U.S. I am sure she would have been a huge star. RIP to a huge talent.
I first remember this song from listening to Judy Collins do it a million years ago. Judy had a beautiful voice but whoever gave her the lyrics was a fool. Still, Liverpool Lullaby has rattled around in my head for half a century. Cilla was a genius of a singer. Stan Kelly, who wrote the lyrics, should be remembered though. Memorable song. Thanks, Stan and Cilla.
Remember watching Cilla sing this when I was a child growing up in Liverpool. She also sang this song to me when I first met her. Fabulous talent, warm and friendly that's our Cilla. Love you rest in peace with Bobby and your daughter Helen XXX
What class! Her gestures, her alluring eye contact with the camera & the audience, are perfectly appropriate to the lyrics and her very fine voice pulls at your heart strings.
Remember hearing this for the first time as a child and loving it, it's always been my favourite song, Rest in peace Cilla, back in the arms of your beloved Bobby, x
I used to sing this song to my little boys because their father was from Liverpool. He taught me the song. Now I am brushing up on the words so I can sing it to my granddaughter who will be born in January.
Just managed to dry the tears, then I read your post. I haven't heard the term "Queen", used like that, since my Grandad's funeral, over 20 years ago. She may not have been born a Queen, but she made her life a fairy tale and she was a fairy tale Queen; kind, honest, down to earth and hard working. Thanks, Cilla, you done good.
I'm pretty sure this version couldn't be broadcast now. Even here I think a word was censored. So so evocative of those days. Working class pride and the ugly face of poverty in the 1960s made so sweet to hear about by Cilla. This song still reduces me to tears. And I who cry so rarely.
Me too, it releases alot of sad emotions for me...I can only remember 2 songs my mom song as a lullaby to me ,this was one and the little boy that santa clause forgot..Them 2 songs mean a lot to me..I do believe, even though it was a hard time for all that we were also so lucky in other ways..
She's lovely. The PBS bio brought me here. I was living in London in the sixties and enjoyed her talent and ready sense of humor, but never realized till now how engaged and smart she was.
This rips me heart out every time I hear it. It evokes so many memories of childhood, my mum, and of Liverpool - some real, some maybe ancestral, and she does it in a way I just can't adequately express. So achingly beautiful.
My mum used to sing this to me when I was small, but she changed 'You'll gerra belt from your da' to ' You'll get a smack from your daddy', as she is from Hertfordshire.
After watching the funeral today, what a fantastic turnout by all including Sir Cliff Richard and Paul O'Grady to name a few!,RIP Cilla,Liverpool will always love you!!.
I accidentally stumbled across this song,I think it’s captivating and utterly beautiful.A hidden gem and Cilla sings it with poise and effortless class what a voice.
Never remembered this song, it was more Floyd, Clash Pistols, Specials and Madness, but it was a blueprint of many a kids upbringing in 70-80 Conservative years.
Oh, yes, a very good comparison. Both songs about growing up in desperate poverty with all its hardships, brutality and powerlessness. Both heartbreaking songs performed extremely well.
Oh you are a mucky kid Dirty as a dustbin lid When he hears the things that you did You'll get a belt from yer dad Oh, you have your father's nose So crimson in the dark it glows If you're not asleep when the boozers close You'll get a belt from yer dad You look so scruffy lying there Strawberry jam tarts in your hair In all the world you haven't a care And I have got so many It's quite a struggle every day Livin' on yer father's pay The beggar drinks it all away And leaves me without any Although you have no silver spoon Better days are coming soon Our Nelly's working at the loom And she gets paid on Friday Perhaps one day we'll have a splash When little woods provide the cash We'll get a house in Knotty Ash And buy your dad a brewery Oh you are a mucky kid Dirty as a dustbin lid When he hears the things that you did You'll get a belt from yer dad Oh you have your father's face You're growing up a real hard case But there's no one can take your place Go fast asleep for your mummy
It's not "little woods", which would make no sense, but "Littlewoods", the football pools, into which my grandfather used to put -- how much? -- perhaps 5/- every week during the season. Millionairedom did not occur, despite his efforts.
OK! Joe brown is my hero, and there were many great groups back then, only a fool would deny that,..... BUT! only a fool would deny if there hadn't been a Liverpool there would never have been a 60s as we know and remember it. Thank you scousers from a Geordie lad

How old is she there I met her as a child in 74 and she looked a lot older then curious when the video is from.
It was written in 1960 and sung by cilla in 1969 I believe 😊
She was born in 43 so she was 26 😊
I know exactly how you feel, it releases so many sad emotions for me when I hear it..aswell with The little boy that santa Claus forgot, I can always remember them 2 songs my mam singing to me..😢..
@@eire3215 Thanks for sharing that😌

She was on J.Carson chow and yes she was
She tried but the Americans didn't like her
The Americans didn't even like Kate Bush but gave falco there biggest hit and sent there alubm platinum god knows how the mind works
Dusty and Bassey were the success stories
Cilla Black was huge in the UK. She was good friends with the beatles also...
A beautiful talented woman who loved Liverpool and someone who Liverpool also loved and will never forget ❤
Happy Memories , Should Have Been A Dame For All Her Great Entertaining & Pleasure She Brought Over The Last 60 Years :( :(
I think they were going to award it to Cilla back in 2015, but she died in that very same year, so they gave it to Barbara Windsor instead
Blind date and suprise suprise were 2 great shows...Those were the days...I'm glad my youth was the 80s and not now..I feel sorry for the kids today

I'm in tears watching this!!,what a talent and personality!!,RIP Cilla xx.
Farewell to Liverpool's darling. Sleep gently Cilla. You will be missed

I remember her singing that lullaby song such a long time ago now and I loved it❤️
Reminds me so much of my childhood in Hulme, Manchester. Hard but happy days.
What class! Her gestures, her alluring eye contact with the camera & the audience, are perfectly appropriate to the lyrics and her very fine voice pulls at your heart strings.
Still moves me to this day ❤
I was only a kid in the 1960s but I used to love Cilla
Remember hearing this for the first time as a child and loving it, it's always been my favourite song, Rest in peace Cilla, back in the arms of your beloved Bobby, x

The best version of a wonderful song.
Thanks for the television memories. With love from this 70's TV Kid. Goodnight and God Bless.

I think that you've mis-heard the lyric. Dirty as a dustbin lid, not, dirty arse, dustbin lid
They changed the lyrics from "you'll ger a belt from your dad" to "you'll get told off from your dad"!
an important song. I have grown to love it
just the best love this song,so much thanks cilla we love you very much.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
She's lovely. The PBS bio brought me here. I was living in London in the sixties and enjoyed her talent and ready sense of humor, but never realized till now how engaged and smart she was.
An amazing song performed to perfection by the great lady.
This rips me heart out every time I hear it. It evokes so many memories of childhood, my mum, and of Liverpool - some real, some maybe ancestral, and she does it in a way I just can't adequately express. So achingly beautiful.
Same - apart from the Liverpool bit. Use to get told 'oh you are a mucky kid' while being subjected to a lick wash.
love this song so much.

very sad Cilla sing this song on her very last show.she was the and Queen of tv and fab singer.xxxxxxx

Never remembered this song, it was more Floyd, Clash Pistols, Specials and Madness, but it was a blueprint of many a kids upbringing in 70-80 Conservative years.
Of course it isn't about a typical working class Labour family 😄
Amazing raw song, I always bracket it with "In the Ghetto" by Elvis.
Oh, yes, a very good comparison. Both songs about growing up in desperate poverty with all its hardships, brutality and powerlessness. Both heartbreaking songs performed extremely well.
A beautiful song from the heart.
Oh you are a mucky kid
Dirty as a dustbin lid
When he hears the things that you did
You'll get a belt from yer dad
Oh, you have your father's nose
So crimson in the dark it glows
If you're not asleep when the boozers close
You'll get a belt from yer dad
You look so scruffy lying there
Strawberry jam tarts in your hair
In all the world you haven't a care
And I have got so many
It's quite a struggle every day
Livin' on yer father's pay
The beggar drinks it all away
And leaves me without any
Although you have no silver spoon
Better days are coming soon
Our Nelly's working at the loom
And she gets paid on Friday
Perhaps one day we'll have a splash
When little woods provide the cash
We'll get a house in Knotty Ash
And buy your dad a brewery
Oh you are a mucky kid
Dirty as a dustbin lid
When he hears the things that you did
You'll get a belt from yer dad
Oh you have your father's face
You're growing up a real hard case
But there's no one can take your place
Go fast asleep for your mummy
fartwinkle1 Very Good top marks ⭐️⭐️🌟
It's not "little woods", which would make no sense, but "Littlewoods", the football pools, into which my grandfather used to put -- how much? -- perhaps 5/- every week during the season. Millionairedom did not occur, despite his efforts.
Nigel Rees is that anything to do with Littlewood’s the company, do you reckon? Maybe eponymous?
@@fartwinkle1 Blighter not beggar....and at the end mammy, not mummy. Thanks for your time!
Possibly one of the worst songs ever recorded
I love this song even if it always brings a tear to my eye
