      Both sets of wafers, on the left and right sides of the key, have their own separate slots in the lock body they engage in when locked. So when you turn the key clockwise, the wafers on the top left side have to pass by the slot on the top right, and the bottom right over the slot on the bottom left. If you've picked the lock, when the core rotates, the left side top wafers drop into the right side top slot, and bottom right into the bottom left slot. That's why you need to pick them again, either to continue rotating it the same way or to rotate it back.

    I'm glad I found this video. My dad bought a pre-owned 2007 Toyota Progres and his driver side door does this weird thing where you can't insert the key all the way in, but if you stuck anything that could fit, even a house key, into the lock and turn it slightly, you could open the doors, no problem. It came that way when he purchased it. Very likely this car was broken in to and the perp left the lock the way it was, so the owner sold it without making any mention of this critical flaw. Now that I know what the cause of the problem is, I can show him this video and we can see if it's possible to get his door lock fixed.

    I am now convinced that Subaru car locks are the most secure locks in existence. The fact that it took the LPL several minutes + a special (lishi) tool that makes picking a lot easier shows how pick resistant they are. If they had ball bearings for drill protection and stuff like that I would instantly buy them and replace every door lock with them.
    It would also be kind of a flex to open your house with a car key

  • @americansmark
    @americansmark Před 2 lety +12

    Car locks are tough if you're stealing the car subtlety. You not only have to pick the lock, but you have to disable the alarm quickly. That's why most stolen cars are older or are base models without alarms. Keys are easier to pick on the 90s cars and most didn't have antitheft alarms or immobilizers.
    Edit: I only say that as someone playing with my own vehicles. Not a car thief or criminal in any way. 🤣

      It's why most cars stolen in Australia today are stolen by putting a rock through a house window and taking the car keys from inside the house. Most people leave their car keys on a hook or in a bowl by the front door, or on their bedside table.

Once it gets to that halfway picked position, it still needs another few wafers to be picked in order to turn. You can see when he uses the key that the cam on the back actually spins a full 90 degrees.

    • @evilspoons
      @evilspoons Před rokem

      @@gilbatzri Because it took him forever to pick, even with a purpose-built tool, and it leaves a sign that someone's screwed with it unless they spend even MORE time on it to reset it. If my driver's door is stuck odds are pretty good keyless entry will still open the other three doors or the hatch.

    • @gilbatzri
      @gilbatzri Před rokem

      @@evilspoons except the scenario of "picking a car door lock to gain entry/steal the car" is not an actual thing that happens ever. Like there is a 0% chance of someone attempting to pick your car door lock.
      If someone wants something from the cabin, they will gain entry via a window. It's faster and easier.
      If they want to steal the car (if it is at all reasonably recent) you need the chipped key to turn on the car, even if you have a matching cut key it won't work, nor will hotwiring the car.
      So the scenario you are imagining and being "happy with this result" of is nonsensical.
      In practice all this means is you have to pay someone to unscrew your lock if it is tampered with. Not sure why you think this is a benefit, but whatever works for you.
      I had a 2012 Subaru Impresa and it was good in an accident, but it was a piece of garbage aside from that, low quality fixtures, bad engineering, the clutch failed catastrophically in the first 3 years, the engine leaked oil from day one, and eventually based on a class action lawsuit they lost the engine was completely replaced.
      Subaru is a garbage company that didn't stand behind their poorly engineered and manufactured product, and their service staff was actively rude in their handling of a manufacturing defect that everyone in the world knew about.
      The Mazda we replaced it with is better engineered, drives better, and is an all over superior vehicle to the Subby.
