    Love the explanations of things that normally don’t get mentioned, for example the catching in some fibres of the hen hackle. The devil is in the detail and that’s why this gentleman is brilliant. English Dave.

    I'll likely never tie or fish a salmon fly, but I love watching them being made... thanks Davie.

    Love the way you tie in the squirrel around the shank, looks so much nicer than top and bottom in separate wings.

    I was given this Ally's fly in a pub in the 90's by a local fly Tyer, first day i used it on the river Forth i caught 7 grilse on it, I fished this fly till it was thread bare, it probably accounted for 26 salmon in 5 weeks on the Forth and Teith.
    I tried every tackle shop at the time none were available to buy, this salmon fly is the reason I started fly tying.
    For me it still beats the Cascade and all other salmon flies on its day.
    Also try a Black Ally's with half silver, black body, black wing, grey squirrel, golden pheasant, black hen hackle with Jungle Cock was also great for Northern Rivers.
    Also a Cambusmore Doctor Fly, Black Body, ribbed with oval gold, mixed tail, yellow, hot orange, black, calf tail or buck tail and strands of twinkle, the wing not mixed half calf tail yellow and half calf tail hot orange, 2 separate colour wings side by side, jungle cock if you wish but it works without it. Throat orange hen.
    If you think of a devon minnow with 2 separate colours this fly works the same way deadly in slightly coloured water. size 8 or 10 treble or double.

    Davie I was in Grantown on Spey in 1985, there were to fly shops there, I remember the small one was Something "Angus" the other one was quite large and obviously the main shop in the area. I bought a large fly box made out of mahogany but I also bought some shrimp patterns because they were new to me. I'm pretty sure they were a type of Ali's Shrimp but they had huge black eyes, larger than any I have seen since and they were slightly cylindrical. That was 36 years ago but that shrimp pattern was unforgettable! Thanks for reviving good memories!

    Great tie mr Mc Phail. Are those ever tied on single hooks?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Dominique LeBlanc,
      It's a great fly tyed on a single hook as I've tyed many on one over the years, they are coming more popular here now as many do practice catch and release...I'm glad you liked the fly..
      All the very best Davie..

    Have you found if the tail is on the long side it may encourage short takes? Curious as to your experience?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 3 lety

      Hi Mike,
      I have to be honest I have never had any problems with fish nipping at the tail of a fly though I have friends that prefer a shorter tail on their flies.
      All the very best Davie

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Gavin,
      I have just got used to using the 8/0 thread though I like the 6/0 at times when tying with certain materials and on large tube flies..
      All the very best Davie..
