Final Thoughts
Blackwood is a great new addition to the ESO journey, refreshing some nostalgic Elder Scrolls locations with a new experience. The region has plenty to explore but may not be captivating for some. The stand-out is the new Companion feature, which opens doors to what could be added in the future, new Companion characters or even new interactions with your allies. The possibilities are endless. The Oblivion Portals provide a different experience compared to previous expansions with the added mystery of where they will pop up next.
If you are looking for an exciting new story to dive into and the chance to explore Tamriel with new friends you’ll have a pretty good time with Blackwood. Companions add a whole new way to experience combat and adds plenty of customization. As for how this will fare when the servers go live with everyone’s companion following them around, we will have to wait and see.

This expansion should be 8.99 , NOT full game price as its extremely sparse and the size of just one of the many zones in the main game which was same price or even a bit less
Yeah the price is so much that when I saw this version priced at $40 compared to the one that cost $60 with the base game and all expansions including Blackwood I ended up getting the $40 version. Well guess who has to fork out more money to get to apparently only $20 worth of expansions for about another $40. Super pissed about that currently so I don't even know if I'll continue playing.
Is every expansion for this game like 40 to 50 buck

I'm really liking it so far. my favorite feature is the companions. Right now, they lack the amount of depth i would like but maybe that will get better as i unlock more skills and better gear for them. I would like to see more customization for them such as hairstyles, makeup, and helms. I would also like to see more companions in general (please met me have an evil dremora companion) and more RP dialog/quests for them. SWTOR did companions really well and would like to see something like that.
As a solo/duo player I’m really looking forward to companions. Also, what armor style was that on your necro??

Seems like a given. This is the company that sold inventory space on mini pets and locked their nicest homes behind micro-transactions at or above the cost of entire AAA games. I'd rather they be part of future story content to enrich the characters, but we'll see. Either way, ZOS is always gonna monetize. It's a universal truth.
@@ClockworkBard If have a subscription to the game you have more than enough crowns to buy a house or pets, none of which are necessary to enjoy the game even at end game. I enjoy the game and I dont feel like I really need anything from the store, I trade my crowns to other players.

As a solo player, this expansion is a solid one. It feels more classic ESO in comparison to Summerset, Elsweyr and Greymoor. Love the companions.
What's so different feeling about the summerset, Elsweyr, and greymoor compared to this new one or classic eso/morrowind?
@@Nzzertral hard to explain really. But I agree. Maybe it’s part nostalgia of being back in cyridill. or maybe, the writers for the quests were just on their A game. But I felt really Emersed in the story. Also the placement of side quests were perfect. Not overwhelming like in some areas. The seemed to be placed in route of the zone quests lines. And also, depending on if you did those side quests or not will change the ending of the zone quest storyline
I just noticed last night there was an in-game graphics setting for screenspace gi (presumably global illumination). Did this come with blackwood? Anyone know if this is the same as raytracing and if so does it use the RT cores if you have an RTX card? I can't seem to find any info on it. It wasn't a big hit on my fps so I turned it on as a standard setting.

I’ve tried so hard to get into this with each expansion and always struggle with builds ect (maybe I’m thinking too much into it 🤷♂️) would love to get into the eso series tho as I love the elder scrolls universe…this expansion sounds good tho especially with companions
A lot of people stress about builds and look up vids, and then dps gets them sucked in. If you do not plan to do hard mode vet raids, do not worry about your dps being 25k
@@SpliffyHusk i am stuck at 20k DPS, idk I do all of the dungeons except vet HM. Probably I am just slow with my abilities and weaving :D

Yo Fextralife, thank you for the honest review. I have a question regarding the new chapter. If I just started ESO today, would you suggest buying the new chapter or waiting until I reach a specific level or point?
If you just started playing, I'd advise waiting until you are sure your commitment level. Each year about this time a new Expansion drops and the old expansion is free if you have ESO Plus. So maybe wait a week or two until you are sure you're hooked?

sometimes those companions bother me because they appear as target and interfere with my personal dps so guess i gotta thank if you can just not hire the companion..
if it were customizable and had some way to upgrade his skills an maybe even put sets in its gear... but if its not i dont feel like i need a companion
i mean, a pvp build can let you solo many activities.

How is the zone itself? Beautiful? Large? Enough things to do?
We touched on this - the zone itself is not as good as Elsweyr or Summerset in terms of impact. The oblivion portals are interesting but because they aren't fixed like the dragons or harrowstorms you may feel the overland is missing some interactivity. The questline is good.

I would just get ESO+ for the DLC - you get them all for 30 days and you get 1500 crowns that you can use to buy them if you want
@@DeltaSniperZRR for the amount you would spend on getting that DLC you could get ESO + for a couple of months. Use that time to play all DLC dungeons and cram your craft bag with as much stuff as you can. Wait for the 4 pack dlc to go on sale an use the crowns you received for having ESO +.
first timer on eso should I buy just the game or the Blackwood update too on steam?
I bought this expansion for 2 things: new argonian themed stuff, and new oblivion stuff. Well I got none of them: Leyawiin is just another imperial city, and I was able to run through the oblivion dungeon in 5 minutes. No argonian houses, the companions are few and boring, no more oblivion dungeons, the main quest is also boring and not interesting at all. Blacwood is barren, you can travel for long minutes with nothing to find. Its simply not worth it imo.

@@thelel6591 What do you mean by "other" DLCs? There are plenty of DLCs for ESO, some worth buying, but with ESO plus you can play all of them except the newest one, so I would rather buy a subscription instead and cancel it when got bored.

Are companions good enough to allow soloing normal dungeons for those that just cant seem to get their builds right? (but are close)

Yes I believe they will help people who struggle with dungeons on normol there are videos out with people testing them in normol and vet dungeons,There mostly for new players,Vet players who run vet trials vet melstrom and so on will have no use for companions but for new players or least experienced players they will be perfect

Bought the expansion blind today and have mixed feelings. For the price of a new chapter, you get a map the size of the Gold Coast. I like Ayleid ruins, but so far I've only found really small ones. The companions are a good idea, but not enough to justify the price. If I didn't know this was a chapter, I would think it was a little DLC. You can't compare this to Summerset.

ESO is an online MMO - you need a persistant online connection and a lot of activities are to do with other people. Skyrim is a single player completable experience. They are really rather different.

Yes you don’t need any dlc or expansion to get going. Eso base game is huge and a ton of content! We have a getting started guide and entire wiki to help!

You should grab a month of ESO Plus and then go through all that content then decide if you want to drop even more.

Wrong game? Mount has no inventory it can increase ur own by training at stables.

I think ESO is a good MMO and have supported it since it's release years ago. Unfortunately the game does not present much of a challenge especially if you join a party in a dungeon. players fly thru content with reckless abandon until you're able to see heroic dungeons.
Yeah I just put it down for this after like 800hrs. I really like it, but wish questing was more of a challenge. Like i would love to be able to toggle a debuff or something on myself that makes me less powerful so i can enjoy the story and stuff. I couldn't finish the dark heart stuff because of it.

Most likely the expansion files ,no matter you bought it or not it will end up on your machine .Zenimax actually attempted to reduce the patch sizes a while ago - dunno to what success
Have not played this game since launch. Seems kind of overwhelming at this point. If you start a new character do you jump straight into the expansions or still go to the newbie island and the first main story, ect.
They tend to put you in the latest, but this one is said to have a new tutorial style. Its not too bad, ESO lets you go at w/e pace you want
You play wherever you want. No levels x-y for zone A type stuff like in other games.
You can literally do whatever you want there is no forced way to progress in eso at all
Blackwood released as I was getting into the middle of Sumerset's storyline. So I went and grabbed mysepf a companion and got back to it. Mirri is an amazing healer so far (not her typical role chosen but what best fit me). As a Warden an extra sidekick rocks. I no longer use a pocket yeal thanks to her. :)
The next expansion better have a new class or at least a new race

I can understand a new class, even tho six classes seem enough to me, but a new race? As far as lore goes adding a new race wouldn't make sense at all. The ten races are all Elder Scrolls should have.
What they have to do is increase character customization, i hate seeing dark haired Altmers as NPCs while i'm stuck with a brown hair color at most.
The next expansion doesn't need new classes or races but it really needs some solid content that is actually worth the money. New unique lands to discover and fun new npcs, not retextured and bland boringness.

7 years later and this game still cant decide what monetization model its want to be... Subscription based, Pay to play or free to play with store... Its does all 3 of them and no one well !
Treat it as a subscription game and get plus, if you want to stay sane.

I agree. To me the Expansions look like a ripoff mostly because the player is required to buy them on top of the ESO Plus membership. One way to solve the issue would be to offer a 2 or 3 months free ESO Plus membership for people who buy the Expansion or to make it immediately avaliable for Crowns in the Store for people who have been accumulating Crowns by being long time ESO Plus subscribers.
The way it is right now, I usually prefer to wait a few months till the Expansion is available for sale at half the price, even if it means missing the hype when it comes out.
@@leonardofacchin1452 It is a business model that allows them to have a relatively harmless cash shop and still be profitable. Most other games either have swinging cash shops or are slowly dieing. If we want good MMOs in the future we will have to pay for them.

That really depends on where you are in the game doesn't it? I mean if you're just starting out not an issue but if you're like me with fifteen builds and years worth of exp under your belt this chapter is an insult.
I bought the expansion and got my companion and after a very short while realised my time was done with this game. Majority of the areas are the same and the price they charge for the expansions are a joke. Downloaded FFXIV and found it much better despite the slow start.
Literally foretold my future I’m not coming back lol..Started when the game first came out. Remember when me and my alliance used to send spam mail in the form of rewards and steal peoples money hahaha the good ole days…Think I’m going phantasy start online
After Greymoor I am kind of disappointed in ESO. Blackwood does not seem worth the money.
@Logan Legend there was so much to do in Greymoor + Markarth though. New world events, new Arena, so many cool motifs, new Antiquity system with unlimited possibilities.
@@rollercoaster478 Could be a wow factor for some people. Some players like exciting areas and being wow with new things. This chapter and last chapter did not do it for them since Skyrim and Blackwood area of Cyrodill are too mundane for them. Not me though, I always go with $1 for a hour of entertainment. Each chapter comes with 30 hours of content and it always takes me longer to enjoy everything they offer so these chapters are worth more to me.
@@TheBlakamon15 yeah thats a good measure. For me, I have spent around 30 hours on Antiquities leveling + some mythics. And I have also done a lot of Antiquities furnishing lead farming and grinding so thats another good 30 hours just on furnishings. So around 60 hours just on Antiquities, which I would say is pretty good considering I got Markarth with ESO Plus. I am not saying ''for free'' because ESO Plus isnt for free, but you know still a good deal, imo.
@Logan Legend I might be wrong, but TES 5 Skyrim has been so much played that its not sentimental anymore to play Greymoor its just another repackaging of TES5. The graphics dont come close to TES5 with all the 4k mods, so that doesnt help. I try to not look at Greymoor as a TES5 repack, but thats what it is basically. I think they captured the feel of Skyrim, and I liked the Harrowstorms, but yeah the story was cut up. And thats on purpose. Because Markarth finishes the story of Greymoor, if I am correct? Money money money.
Blackwood looks meh, its just green and swamps. Basically Murkmire vanilla. I am not bothered to run and buy it, I will probably buy it for crowns when it comes out in Store. The Oblivion Portals look cool, but they will get boring quickly, if the drops are meh. And looks like the drops are meh. So yeah. I am not in a rush, I have like 20 games to play in my library :D
@@TheBlakamon15 Summerset and Elsweyr definitely had the wow factor. Summerset was just so beautiful. Alinor is still my favourite city design and looks wise. Skyrim was ok looking, I didnt find any ugly areas, but also not much wow factor. Solitude was solid though. Blackwood is just ugly looking, ou jesus, what have they done? All the budget went into Oblivion Portals etc :D

U Did not mention pvp status of the game,proc sets nerf with a cap amout of spell/wep damage,the 50% nerf of champion points perks,the tragic state of the megaservers,the endless bugs of the game,i think this might be a 5/10 to me. Litterally not worht to buy.
I can see already main character nerfs to make players use companions . I hope this doesn’t happen because it already sounds like the companion feature is a headache and not all that great especially when loosing inventory space and all that goes into the companions. Just my thoughts
Thanks for the highlight. I see there’s a lot of people who love companions . I just have one question what servers are y’all playing on? Because the North American servers are damn near ready to explode with all the new baby ESO players and their companions and also hardcore vets and returning players have made Oblivion portals campy and world bosses oh let’s not talk about the Delves and Dungeon campers hiding and waiting only to farm the same pieces over and over . There needs to be tier levels to prevent clogging and NPC leveling to match those who run through Dungeons and Delves just to kill the boss only to fuck up the cycle of NPC responds . In other words it’s way to crowded on ESO no matter what you do or where you go so something should be done to fix the clogging of characters

Is this content harder then? Because you could *EASILY* beat ESOs quest content before.
The companions aren't about the questing. Companions are aimed at encouraging solo players to tackle some of the group content. Being the only player trying to kill a dragon or harrowstorm isn't fun, and a lot of the world bosses are ignored by solo players because of the same reason. Zenimax is trying to give those players an option to try that content.

It would be great if they gave us an option for a vet overland mode...
Sure you can solo a dragon, it will take you an eternity and a ton of effort best used elsewhere. Same with harrowstorms, etc. also many players don’t run self healing or tank builds and get ohko by world bosses like the vampire grounds, or the Kung fu khajiit is southern elsweyr
Why i call ESO a casual MMO. You dont gave to go hard or need to. Just sit back and enjoy the story and lore.
Oblivion portals are what Rifts should have been, in the mmorpg Rift.

The companion system seems so pointless. Its put me off returning. Tired of resetting my cp every 3 month. Everything is pay to play after these new chapters... Its getting boring trying to keep up. When you do, the game lags, crashes has stupid bugs

I must say, this expansion is my favorite thus far.

Yes they are optional
So is armor and weapons. Also using skills is optional. So is asking dumb ass questions in real life is optional
The companions needs to be better from what I've seen so far. SWTOR does it much better. Theirs is much more robust with hours of story for the companions, and far more useful in actual battles.
In FFXIV you don't have companions in battle except for the Chocobo. So they lose on that front. BUT instead of just one zone and no new class.... you get 4 new zones and 2 new classes... It's so much better.

But I prefer the freedom that eso gives when it comes down to builds and sets, FFXIV if you area a tank wear this and that's it..farm this for hours or you'll never be the best. Eso, out of say the 100 sets a tank can use you have the option to use 10 sets with combination of day another 5 sets and you'll benefit your team greatly in different ways.

no mention on the fact they nerfed every passive node in the champion system by 50%, there is no point in the endgame progression after you unlock 4 slottables for every color...
FOR ANY OTHER NOOBS LIKE ME.... Even though Blackwood on steam says it includes the previous chapters it is a LIE from the pit of hell and steam agreed with me. This isnt the first time zenimax has used false advertisment to get sales as they did this with ESO+ a few years ago till they changed the description to be more accurate. I repeat if you are a new player, buying blackwood does not get you the other chapters even though the description says so.
Coming back after 2 years and wow, they really gutted the Nightblade mechanics. From buffs from entering and leaving stealth with an epic ambush animation to poofing for a blink of an eye to do a guaranteed crit which you could have done 3 crits in the time it took .-.

@@mrklutzy6191 I can still use stealth, sure, but my point is that what’s the point casting stealth for a guaranteed crit when I have 50-70% chance to crit anyway.
In PvP I can get maybe 3 casts off then I’m AP fodder. Sorcs have magishields, Templar’s have massive heals, DKs have damage shields and big self heals, Wardens have insane regen and Necromancers have crazy buffs too. Nightblades have 3 seconds of a pricy stealth skill that can be interrupted by nearly anything. Feels like they’ve really gimped the class.
ur first opening move you already know will be a crit right? so u spec into that by buffing up as much as possible and ulting. then you dump that guy with an ult and a quick spammable and execute and theyre gone. so if its for an initiate you make sure your first move is going to hit as hard as fucking possible. or when u get a spectral bow proc. instead of using it you cloak and then use it to ensure it hits for max damage.

What really annoys me with Eso and these expansions is that they are such bad value, look at Ffxiv expansions for around the same price. Multiple zones a story that carries on with free updates, new classes ect. Until it gives you at least 4 new zones I really don't think they are worth it. (also the crown store can do one)
So basically the companions are pointless. An excuse to add more things to the crown store, I don't need to see a npc following me and dying constantly.

Yeah price goes from $30 to $112 for basic or upgraded versions of dlc $112 you only get extra mount and some garbage... yeah eso lost me... will occasionally play but I'm done forking out money on cosmetics and bull that's way over priced for something digital and not even high quality...
It’s totally worth it I finished the whole map and it’s amazing. Would definitely buy this again.
I want to try this game out but what blows me away is how TERRIBLE, just absolutely horrible the animations are. They are by far the worst ive ever seen from anything other than an indie game. To make a 3rd person game animations are so important and these are so jank. I mean i have no words for how bad they really are.

@@Nzzertral They are much easier to gear and has a huge storyline each. Way better. SWTOR needs to come to console.
The companions in SWTOR have their own voice acted story lines, every class has 6 different companions to choose from. Then there are some non class specific ones. If you're a solo player you can set them to heal or tank and you never need to group again.

@@nihilistnico Huh??? You must be thinking of some other game... If your rig can handle it... ESO looks great on "Ultra" settings... I'm pretty sure that's why ZOS made the video settings adjustable... They made the default video settings a lower quality to allow it to be played on more machines... If you're are playing with "Off-the-shelf" default settings, you may be disappointed...

I hate the gameplay in ESO - even though I’ve tried melee, caster and pet classes. I learnt to hate trash mob fights. They’re boring and feel uninteractive. It’s the most common criticism of ESO and it’s never addressed.
It was an unfortunate consequence of one Tamriel. I suppose if they changed it now a lot of scrubs would complain - hard to believe how hopeless some people are at gaming and have little desire to get better.
@@roqsteady5290 I suck at playing Exanima but I still love the gameplay. I believe that part of ESO's problem is that it's designed to cater for people who have a poor internet connection. Another part of it is that I recall effectively no kiting spells. It's all down to leaping about. However, I'm not a game designer - I just know that something is wrong.
@@morsmagne it’s certainly not designed for those with a poor connection, since light attack weaving requires a low ping and most skills don’t have cool downs. I agree though that combat is not ideal: I really dislike having to swap bars to keep up buffs, it’s a complete pain. GW2 has a much better combat design IMOP, if they would just remove tab targeting it would be close to ideal. I have not heard of Exanima, will have to check it out.
@@roqsteady5290 Exanima has the best physics engine of any game I've played. Fighting NPCs feels like fighting real living things. The only reason I don't play it is because it requires effort and I prefer to relax when I'm playing a game these days.
