Binge watched the $h!t out of you over the last month. This channel is one of the most underrated/underapprecitated on all of youtube. I made a video on my channel that mentions the limitless benefits of binge watching the best educational materials online, and mentioned this channel big time. May the fly of happiness pee in your coffee Sir.

Whenever I'm struggling to unpack my university readings (currently Canguilhem & Bergson on Vitalism) I come and listen to Philosophize This and then start to get my head around it! Much gratitude!

This process vs mechanism is similar to what Alan Watts talks about with boxes vs wiggles. He goes on to say that the world is not made like at a factory but it is grown like an organism.

Having a good humour about things does help with life. Just don't ever laugh at weak or insecure people. They take it as a personal attack, rather than corrective commentary on folly. A friend recently told me a story about how she uses laugher as a defense mechanism, but in using that mechanism she deeply offended a man who was offering her sincere advice. Laugher behaves as a corrective mechanism only when interpreted as kindness. Some laugher is derisive, and intended to cause harm. Are you laughing with or at someone? The difference is the linchpin of interpretation between kind humour and derisive humour. For my own visual work I find absurdity to be a contrast between vitalism, and rationality. In a hyperbolic fashion taking things to their logical conclusion, where that conclusion is ridiculous in the extreme, is my golden goose.
I am so glad Mr. West made this podcast.
I had an experience with a regional manager who had a glib smile on his face one night. The business was going out of business, because of his crappy leadership, and the fact he had already written us off as throw away losers. I made a comment to one of my immediate supervisors about his smile being inappropriate when everyone else was super depressed and overworked to the point of toxic stress. The regional manager was sitting around the corner eavesdropping on the conversation. He sent me this super passive aggressive text talking about how he needs to take medications for eye complications and that my comments were inappropriate. Why didn't he stand up and say that at the time? So yeah... being emotionally responsive to the audience's mental state is very important. Figuratively everything was burning and I interpreted his actions that he thought it was funny. Being completely out of touch with reality does not inspire people to follow. It does the exact opposite. Being glib robs a leader of respect, due to a lack of basic comprehension as to the seriousness of the situation. A lack of emotional responsiveness is a clue that the leader is out of touch with reality.

I wish more people would discover this great show. Not many who succeed in making their subject matter as interesting as this.
    Very thankful that it exists.

I haven't heard this episode yet, because I didn't want to "skip ahead". I'd listened to a few random episodes of special interest to me, and realised that I enjoyed everything more when heard in continuity
But anyway, I wanted to leave a comment, thanking you for what you do. It has enriched my life, and made me consider so many different worldviews as I navigate my everyday. Above all, it made me a much humbler and more appreciative person.
I'm currently at episode #54, and will be on to the Kant series next (mad excited!). My absolute favourite so far is still the Hellenistic ages. Can't wait to catch up!!

Thanks! I'm an adjunct Phil Prof and I really enjoy your videos. While Dennett has a take on laughter counter, I always preferred the idea that laughter functions like a captcha, social cohesion through the acknowledgement of intersubjectivity. As dynamic beings we can see the holes.

I don't like this theory of laughter, or the superiority one 😫.
Maybe laughter is more about relief. The temporary relief of freedom when certain rules, ways of thinking or illusions are broken unexpectedly. The relief that a potentially dangerous situation isn't as serious as it could be. The relief that you were fooled in a safe way. The relief that nobody is perfect. The relief of perceiving things less seriously.
