Gerbrand Grobler - Counter Attacking Brilliance

- Gerbrand Grobler was a childhood hero of mine. He was, at times, erratic, but when he was on form he was sublime and was one of the best counter attacking fullbacks in South Africa. He could have played for South Africa and was unlucky to never get a chance.
Unfortunately, Gerbrand tragically died in a car accident in late 1994, while he was in his prime and playing for Transvaal.

Awesome Sportsman. I remember one week him bowling for Northern Transvaal in a cricket provincial final and the next week running out for the Northern Transvaal rugby side for a pre season Friendly. He moved to Transvaal as there was much unhappiness at Northern Transvaal. also to play under Kitch Christie's coaching
Gerbrand Grobler. One of the most exciting Rugby Union players that I've seen. With his brilliant running, I think he would have made a terrific Rugby League full-back. I can just picture him, tearing the defence to shreds, in the 13-a-side Rugby code. I was suprised to see him switch from Northern Transvaal, to Transvaal.
As far as I know, Gerbrand was born in Bloemfontein, in the Orange Free State. Although he played Cricket for the Free State, I don't think he ever played for his native province in Rugby Union. That's a shame !! I was very sad to learn that he was killed in a car accident in 1994. He was good enough to have played for South Africa.

As a laaitie growing up a watching my first rugby from the mid 80's - 2 fullbacks just really stood out, Juba and Gerbrand. i even watched his cricket!

He died just before a call up to the Springbok squad as a back up. Then Helgard Muller replaced him.
