Persona 5 is way to easy even in the highest difficulty, if you have the slightest idea of what you are doing, which is kinda sad. Unless you go out of your way to not get too strong every boss can be defeated really easily
I like terraria's difficulty concept, where a harder difficulty gives more rewards, it makes it so that even after beating the game on easy mode, hard mode still feels like a new experience, along side that there are different classes (range, melee, summoner, mage), some being harder than others which also allows for a new experience every time
I loved how after you defeated a hard boss and felt 10 times more powerful with the items it gave you, you were opened the area towards an even bigger challenge. For example you defeated skeletron and now the dungeon has opened. You defeated the wall of flesh and the whole world has changed in difficulty becoming harder than before.
I’d say one argument I see with games like Dark Souls and similar games is if you can beat one you can beat all of them which is not entirely the case. I remember beating Dark Souls 1 and then my friend gifted me Elden Ring and I thought it was gonna be a cake walk but the game showed me that definitely wasn’t the case. That’s what I love about those games there’s always something new to learn with each souls like game. Lies of P looks great but i know it’s gonna give me a run for my money when it finally releases!!
Yep. I played Elden Ring before I started playing Dark Souls and I got my ass kicked so much. I'm happy to say that Manus & Artorias are my favourite fights
I think what they mean by "if you beat one, you can beat them all" is that if you have the determination and tenacity to complete one, you'll likely be able to pass any of them, given enough time.
I think it's important to say that getting over it does save progress, not in a save point way, but near the beginning Bennet even says that you can leave the game and come back and your progress will be saved, I feel like that's an important sentiment of the game
When I played my first COD campaign (2019) I did it on max difficulty and was so happy every time I beat a stage. Then I lost my save on the final level some how…
I remember speed running through the COD Modern Warfare series in veteran difficulty. It took so much time to discover the best movements and tactics and shortcuts in every stage. It was annoying but at the same time I enjoyed all of it. Beating my personal time records was the best thing
First time i played Marvel's Spider-Man, i played with Friendly difficulty (which is the equivalent of easy) and once i finished the game couple times and knowing how to beat the enemies efficiently, i switched to Ultimate difficulty Most games i play on Easy, because i wanna enjoy the game for the fun of it. So i don't understand the "hate" whenever someone says they play on Super Easy difficulty. I always told them "as long as u enjoy the game, its cool"
Some games might not have a difficulty selection but add items or powers that might make the game easier for players and then everyone decides if they want to make their experience easier or challenge themselves while still playing the way the developers internet to. Elden Ring had spirit ashes which a lot of people complained made the game too easy so they just didn’t use them at all but some players had to use them to bring the skill ceiling down and enjoy the game
As a disabled person who struggles to play video games and also has stomach problems that prevents me from being able to eat spicy foods, I LOVE that ending analogy, comparing difficulty to spice levels and game devs to chefs. If I see something on the menu that advertises how spicy it is, I'm just not going to order it- it wasn't made for me and I know I'd only be punishing myself for trying it. They didn't make it for people like me, they made it for the people willing to try it and that's the chef's/dev's prerogative. That's chill, it's a little sad sometimes but not everything is made for everyone. But when they do come with customization abilities (replacement ingredients, allergy warnings, mild options), I'm ecstatic! Accessibility options that devs implement intentionally make me feel like they want me to able to play and enjoy their games. Of course I think more games could benefit from optional accessibility features (like even just from a business point of view, disabled people are a whole extra demographic with money they'd be willing to spend lol, why wouldn't you add them?), but if not, then whatever, I have better things to do with my time and much more pressing things to be angry about. tldr: I'm a disabled noob so adjustable difficulty is a treat, but I think I'd be the idiot at this point if I bought a Dark Souls game and got angry at it for being difficult
In my opinion, games like getting over it and only up aren’t intended to be difficult, they’re intended to get the player angry. I’ve finished Elden ring and so called other “dark souls” games such as Jedi:Fallen order, and despite how many times I’ve died to bosses or combat encounters, I never get angry. Sure, I can get frustrated, annoyed, or depressed, but never pure, unadulterated rage or anger. I think this is because those games incentivise learning, and someone will eventually learn how to get used to the combat or a boss. Getting over it and only up are not these kinds of games, I believe that, instead, they were particularly designed to get the gamer angry. They offer no true way to improve at playing the game, and only reward endurance instead of learning. It’s for this reason that many have taken to inventing a whole new genre of game, called a “rage game”, in which getting over it and only up would fall.
Exactly! Plus in dark souls 1 the story in completely intertwined to difficulty. The world is dying and so you are pathetic and if you rage and give up and quit you hollow. The act man once said the importance of Firelink shrine and the bonfires is the harsher the desert the sweeter the oasis. Removing the difficulty would destroy the experience.
I think the anger argument is a little subjective. I broke a mouse once over my frustration at dark souls 3. Still love the game. And whilst playing Celeste, I was rarely ever upset. To this day, I'm not sure why. I certainly died enough times that I feel I should have been, but I just wasn't. As for Only Up and Getting Over it, I think there is some degree of learning required to pass the game. In the sense that you have to acclimate to the controls and learn the movements to get yourself further along. In that way, they're kinda like something akin to dark souls. I would also call them "streamer bait" instead of "rage games", but that's just me.
Games like Getting over it, jump king and going up seem like they could honestly be the next big game genre as there very entertaining to both play and watch
I feel like a game should have a decent tutorial into an extremely challenging boss into a ride with hard and easy parts climaxing into the hardest boss in the game, then a short drop into a fantastic finish.
One of the hardest games i’ve ever played is Ghostrunner. That game is hard because one shot and you’re dead. But once you get good at it then it becomes fairly easy
I wanna give a special mention to what I would consider the hardest difficulties I've ever attempted (I am sure there are more difficult challenges, but I haven't tried them) Nightmare Difficulty in Doom 2016, Realistic Difficulty in Call of Duty Black Ops 3 (not to be confused the Realism Difficulty in games like MW19), and LASO Difficulty in Halo 2. Unlike FromSoftware Games or Cuphead or genuinely challenging games, these difficulty settings were very clearly not intended by the developer and probably had very minimal play testing. If you have completed any of these games with such settings, you truly are one of the legends and have a ridiculous amount of patience, hats off to you.
Eeeeh, IMO it is not. As Macro stated, you suffer only when you fall, i.e. lose your progress. The gameplay itself is basically just a minecraft parcour course.
Hey Macro. I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and I had a great idea for a game you should do “for noobs”. The game is Omega Strikers. It’s a 3v3 anime air hockey game where you attempt to fight the other team and score to try to win. There are many characters including an introverted witch, a genji wannabe, a little girl with rockets and nukes (also voiced by the same person that voices Bangalore), and even a big hamster. But the most important thing I like, is that the team running it genuinely cares about their community and pushes out updates and balance patches around every 2 weeks, the most being 3 weeks, and the monetization isn’t through the roof as you can get highly valuable skins from around $9-$13. Let me know if you play it and tell me what you think! Btw, the game is also available on every platform with cross play and cross progression. ❤
So the problem with people saying Pokémon is too easy is because it’s designed for a 5 year old to beat it. It wasn’t meant for 15 year veteran player tony to be challenged.
Legends was actually the first attempt to make a difficult game and it worked. All they did was tweaking up a bit the stats and made some improvements to the moves. Was it impossible? No, but considering that the last time I lost mons or fights was way back in Johto in HGSS, when I was an inexperienced kid, losing for once was actually a breath of fresh hair.
@@caliberkat me too. It was the first time in years since I had fun on a Pokémon title. And also hope because if SV came before Legends I would have lost that too, since Legends actually tried to make us feel something
Even Roblox has lots of difficulty theres games where you need to deafet a boss to get an item, the items drop chance is 0.1 you need that item to be good at the game so you basically sell your soul to do this, theres a lot more bosses that have that chance too.
At first, Elden ring was really hard for me to beat. The thing is tho, when I did actually beat it, it was a rewarding experience. Now I’m into all the souls games :)
My favorite type of games are games where there isn’t a difficulty changer or slider. I like playing the game as the developers wanted me too and play it at the same difficulty as everyone else. It also keeps me away from choosing the easy difficulty just because I can.
I don’t understand why someone would subject themselves to play a game like only up when it’s movement is so shitty and the only appeal is that the devs didn’t include saving
Having difficulty options is always nice. I remember trying a game like Fire Emblem that I was pretty bad on, but had a fun time at the easiest difficulity, I generally suck at strategy games, now when I play a Fire Emblem game I can play it on the hardest and have fun, but would probably never try it if it didn't have a normal/easy mode.
I think the best balance is when the game feels easy to get in but hard to master in their respective genre. Recently i tried code vein and it actually very accessible to soulslike newcomer like me. The partner system encourage you to overcome the challenge. They talk to you to don't lose heart when we respawn and in combat they really helpful. But when i want some challenges, i go solo like traditional soulslike games. To hard? No biggies, just go in with your partner and maybe gain some exp more before boss fight
5:28 as a fun and exciting response to the fans making their own hard mode game freak promptly condemned anyone who does nuzlockes rather than make their own games less ass.
This reminds me of when people were saying that if a game isn't made for everyone it shouldn't be a game, but if you know the game is too hard for you THEN GET ANOTHER GAME GOOFY ( btw i've beaten every from soft game so i'm kinda biased )
I hate it when games don't get any effort put into it by the devs and they somehow obtain hundreds of thousands of copies. I mean for the love of god, more than half of the things which come with Only Up are just some of the traits most probably Unreal Engine gives you when you open a new project in the engine. I really don't want PC games to become the same as mobile games. Low quality gameplay games downloaded by over a million people...
I was thinking of this the other day, games skill ceiling should not be lost, the game having meaningful playtime and potential things to do it's great. The game should be a fun experience for the player, learning meaningful things about the game is important. Said that there is a breach between people who grind those games and the truly casual fans, not saying casuals are bad, they can be the ones that help the community grow, they keep the community sane and good, but the rift between the hardcore player and casual it is becoming more broad with time. I do believe that without losing the skill ceiling and not holding the player hand, there should be an intended path for those players who are truly new to gaming in general. Edit: I think what I'm describing is the game just being balanced, the game can be challenging but given the tools the player can always manage within the game.
If we're using food analogy, I still salt my food if I find them bland. I also add ketchup or A1 sauce if I think your steak sucks and I think this is fine, I got to make some thing I found bland to be at least edible.
The worst type of game difficulty is either RPG tank scaling (I.e enemies with more health = difficulty) or COD Realism/Veteran Campaign (One/Two shots death from every side = difficulty).
I just played Jedi survivor (4/5 difficulty) and the demo for Lies of p (my first Souls like game). The difference was if I died to a boss over 10 times on Jedi survuvir I just felt more compelled to lower the difficulty and bring it back p after the fight and felt like I was cheating, instead of playing lies of P I stuck with it dying a bunch of times to bosses but felt such a rewarding feeling at the end.
thats probably the best part of risk of rain 2 its hard (for me) on the normal diffuculty at first so i went to the lower and than completed challenges so i could figure out the best character (huntress) but i had to learn her before i could even attempt monsoon diffuculty
GTFO is the perfect example of difficult gaming done right. The game makes you plan out everything. However, what makes GTFO perfect is that its difficult due to the teamwork required. You will not beat anything if your teamwork is not airtight. Completing a mission in that game feels just amazing because you celebrate with your team. Difficult gaming done right.
I feel something many people don't understand about difficulty in games, is that it must have a purpose for being that difficult. note: purpose cannot include "for the sake of difficulty" Take darksouls, why is the game so difficult? From software wanted to create a depressing world, one filled with hostility, and the best way to do that was to make the game difficult for first time players. Ultrakill is another good example of this, why do a large portion of the fan base yearn for harder bosses and difficulty, like the prime souls on violent? It creates a feeling of mastery that almost no other game can accomplish. You feel like a badass, because you earned it, not like spider-man where the game is extremely lenient on when you can dodge and attack, even on harder difficulties. However, that works perfectly well for Spider-man because the easier difficulty was chosen so that ANYONE can feel like spider-man in the combat sections, and the appeal of the game is not combat anyways, it's the characters and swinging around Manhattan. tl;dr: difficulty in video games is a deliberate chose by the developers that must serve a purpose, no matter what that difficulty is edit: just thought of another game where the difficulty is perfect for the intentions of the developers. Hotline miami is difficult to create a similar emotion between the player and the character, a drug fueled, 80s rage. hotline miami 2 in the beard levels does the same thing, making the missions extremely difficult to create a similar sense of hopelessness of being sent on suicide mission after suicide mission. Another thing, souls like games lake of difficulty options are there to have every player go through the same struggle to survive, creating a community with comradery I haven't seen in many other places.
I don't think that a game's difficulty matters if you're having fun, i really love the challenge of dark souls 3, but i also love the creativity and just fun platforming of Kirby and Mario Odyssey. It's all about fun
Cool example of difficulty in games is Pathologic 2. It's default setting for difficulty is the hardest one if you don't go into custom sliders, but it was added because in the original Pathologic most people never made it past Day 1. Did this made the game more casual? Yes. Was that detrimental to the general experience and entry threshold? Definitely not.
This is what old games were like. If you died you went back to the beginning of the level and you had maby 3 lives, then it was back to the beginning of the game. They were often arcade ports made to eat your quarters. You could make a game like that if it wasn't too long for one sitting. Sorry for the old reference, but a huge offender back in the day was Solstice. You had to find 250 rooms and even though it wasn't that hard I would never find those 250 rooms in a day with no save file. On the other hand a lot of the Kirby games were ridiculously easy. A lot of modern games are barely games. You follow an arrow, complete a quest, level up, and do a harder quest, and you can save it whenever, though you barely risk dying anyway. If you throw in the traditional hard games half the kids cry it's too hard and not fun anymore... But anyway... If you make a short game in the modern era that's not that engaging but relies on knowing exactly how to jump it's more of a gimmick, and kind of cheap. Most modern games are WAY too long to not have a save, but there are some old games that have gotten it right (IMHO) like double dragon 3 (not popular I know) and Burai fighter. To clarify, Burai fighter did have passwords but I couldn't finish it without all the powerups, so it was useless to me. If you're bored and feeling nostalgic, try that! It was hard for me, so don't bother unless you're a challange type gamer.
I hate the term, but my first “dark souls difficulty” game was Ninja Gaiden and holyyyyyyyyyyy, after beating that first boss I felt so good I had to take a vacation

An example of game difficulty I thought of was the fact that the entirety of portal 2 is easier than the second half of the original game.
this analogy is on point
The worst type of game difficulty is either RPG tank scaling (I.e enemies with more health = difficulty) or COD Realism/Veteran Campaign (One/Two shots death from every side = difficulty).
I love your documents, your videos keep me watch all the video
I just played Jedi survivor (4/5 difficulty) and the demo for Lies of p (my first Souls like game). The difference was if I died to a boss over 10 times on Jedi survuvir I just felt more compelled to lower the difficulty and bring it back p after the fight and felt like I was cheating, instead of playing lies of P I stuck with it dying a bunch of times to bosses but felt such a rewarding feeling at the end.
bro had to sneak in that 360 no scope from apex
talking difficulty then hit them with the dark souls "you dead" sound
Except for the last minute this felt very very similar to Dunkey’s videos on game difficulty
thats probably the best part of risk of rain 2 its hard (for me) on the normal diffuculty at first so i went to the lower and than completed challenges so i could figure out the best character (huntress) but i had to learn her before i could even attempt monsoon diffuculty
Difficult gaming done right.
you shouldve added Remnant cinematics because of how close the sequel is to coming out
I love you for the ultrakill section
I feel something many people don't understand about difficulty in games, is that it must have a purpose for being that difficult. note: purpose cannot include "for the sake of difficulty"
Take darksouls, why is the game so difficult? From software wanted to create a depressing world, one filled with hostility, and the best way to do that was to make the game difficult for first time players.
Ultrakill is another good example of this, why do a large portion of the fan base yearn for harder bosses and difficulty, like the prime souls on violent? It creates a feeling of mastery that almost no other game can accomplish. You feel like a badass, because you earned it, not like spider-man where the game is extremely lenient on when you can dodge and attack, even on harder difficulties. However, that works perfectly well for Spider-man because the easier difficulty was chosen so that ANYONE can feel like spider-man in the combat sections, and the appeal of the game is not combat anyways, it's the characters and swinging around Manhattan.
tl;dr: difficulty in video games is a deliberate chose by the developers that must serve a purpose, no matter what that difficulty is
edit: just thought of another game where the difficulty is perfect for the intentions of the developers.
For a second i thought that the guy on the left was junpei iori but sadly it wasn't
I don't think that a game's difficulty matters if you're having fun, i really love the challenge of dark souls 3, but i also love the creativity and just fun platforming of Kirby and Mario Odyssey. It's all about fun
The thing about Pokémon games is yes I feel like they are getting easier but the players are also getting better so it’s going to feel easier
Kingdom hearts: tangled boss HAS to have the ultra kill settings. It’s impossible!!”
I really wish macro would play a monster hunter game someday
Commenting on every Macro video, suggesting he plays Risk Of Rain 2: #1
Do Tier list please 🙏 ❤
If Pokemon is to easy for you, play a Shin Megami Tensei game. Very similar to Pokémon but way harder and more complex, I recommend to everyone here
macro we love u dawg
I genuinely think that only up doesn’t have saves because the developers didn’t want to put effort into making a save system.
Macaroni with the
This is what old games were like. It was hard for me, so don't bother unless you're a challange type gamer.
we need a difficulty teir list
Bro tried sneaking in Apex
W analogy
I like to have my games be slightly harder than normal
Guys I think macro liked playing ultrakill
I hate the term, but my first “dark souls difficulty” game was Ninja Gaiden and holyyyyyyyyyyy, after beating that first boss I felt so good I had to take a vacation
Easy is great cause I can just chill same with normal
