Connel has major anxiety which is why he couldn't ask Marianne if he could live with her. It's not about pride. Him saying that he's not able to stay in his apartment during the summer was his way of getting Marianne to ask him to come and live with her. When Marianne replied so you're going back to Sligo, he was devastated and that's why he said I guess you want to see other people. It was actually a question, and he said it because he thought Marianne didn't want him around during the summer. I think it's interesting that we got to see both their POVs on that discussion, because to Connel it seemed like Marianne was being cold and didn't want him, whereas Marianne viewed it in another way and was devastated, because she thought Connel broke up with her. They just both have such insecurities and are always afraid of the other one getting bored and leaving and that's why they always jump to the worst conclusions and don't communicate
I think it is pride. The fact he has anxiety over it is because he feels ashamed about needing to even ask. He also opened that conversation by telling her that he wont be there for the summer which to her meant he made this decision already. If he wanted an invitation he never gave her a chance. He couldve said he didnt have a place to stay anymore or he cant afford to stay there but his pride over asking made him not say those things. I must say tho that Marianne's insecurities caused her to fail to see this otherwise she would know better and offered him this without him having to ask.
He did not want to take advantage of her feelings (AGAIN, like he did in the past and has admitted to), so he was waiting for her to take the initiative and ask him to stay. He is awfully aware of the effect he has on her («I would have done everything you asked», a confession she repeats throughout the series and that, in other relationships, translates into the conscious and self-destructive acceptance of sadistic and abusive dynamics...) and how dependent she is of him and how hyper-conscious he is of all that has led him to chronically shut himself up and ask nothing of her. He prefers to lose her than to (ab)use (of) her and so he walks way. Then there's the whole class difference (that they discuss in later episodes) which accentuates the idea (in his head) that he should not be "taking advantage of her" but instead earning it on his own + the extreme social and relational anxiety that impedes him and blocks all his thoughts and initiatives and makes even the most simple and earned gestures seem steel-heavy and impossible to take...
The director shot the breakup scene twice for a reason. Obviously they both heard their own versions, it is captured perfectly. Connell was ashamed to ask for help, bc their financial inequality is a big issue for him. And her reaction was not the one he expected, very cold. So he made up the "I guess you would like to see other people", but he didn't mean it. In her version he was acting cold, so her mind heard "we SHOULD see other people", but he didn't say that. She heard that bc of her own issues. Anyway, misunderstanding, misreading, misleading all over the place. Such a shame.
Joe, I'm sorry, but Connell didn't last 50 seconds. Their intimate scenes were just edited that way, so they actually don't look like adult films. Marianne and Connell had very intense sex and no other partners could compare. It's not pronounced directly, but it's obvious. In fact, I think they kept returning to each other exactly because of this special sexual and mental bond. In the book it is underlined very specifically.
