- We're joined in the office by 3D modeler and designer Jacky Wan, who shares with us his 3D printed Mechwarrior online mechs. These figures were created on his Ultimaker by extracting in-game models and then modifying and adapting them for printing. Jacky chats with us about what it takes to turn game files into printable objects!

Shout out to all my old school BattleTech table-top gamers.
That Jenner is amazing. It was my favorite mech from Battletech and I love the Mechwarrior online sculpt of it. I wish you could buy kits like this. Looks like I might have to finally look into a 3d printer.
"They revamped all the MechWarriors... in MechWarrior Online"
*Dies a little inside*
I mean, they did, though, that's where the redesigns started
@@colbyboucher6391 no he means the mechs are called Battlemechs. the pilots are called mechwarriors.
@@LavaDa1shi Wait, are you tellin' me Halo guy's name isn't Halo?
@@colbyboucher6391 I think one of us missed something so I'm gonna explain my pov, he quotes the guy who said they revamped all the MechWarriors in MechWarrior online, and then he states he dies a little inside cause they called it MechWarrior not battlemechs, then you say something that seems mostly unrelated so i explain the joke to you, and then you say the thing about halo did I misunderstand something or what.
Love how everyone remembers MechWarrior (the video game, not the pnp rpg) but no one ever mentions BattleTech... ;-)
+Frankenstein077 I have a Battletech poster up just to my right. Swell with D6's, 13 to-hit numbers and crouching behind a light and heavy woods.
+Frankenstein077 I preferred Battletech the video game - but then they got bought out...
+Frankenstein077 Aff!
+Frankenstein077 community.battletechgame.com/forums battletech returns
+Frankenstein077 Lest we forget Front Mission 3!
Really cool. I like how the last one has the look like it had a leg replacement from another mech. Gives it character.
+nosferatu5 its actually a charity mech from last year for a cancer charity its called "sarahs jenner" after a young girl who passed away
@@ripjaw76 Best part is all proceeds go directly to the PCF and it's one of the few things you can't use MechCredits to buy. I was even planning to paint my Jenner miniature in honor of Sarah until I lost interest in collecting and painting miniatures for the time being.
this is my favorite tested video of all time I think I've watched this start to finish four times. I used to be a prototype machine designer I know what it's like to import a very hairy solid model but the level of detail with a toy has got to be over the moon. thank you guys for finding something I can do with a 3D printer.
This was pretty amazing, as a huge battletech fan I would love to see more of these!
Valcrow, love your work. Thank you for sharing your process and results in the MWO forums. Really helped me get going on my prints as well. Glad to see you getting recognized here!
Play this game every single day. I want 3d printed mechs SO BADLY.
Stop watching tested and play more mechwarrior bandit.
I like the fusion of the joints, great execution.
Great job man, a fantastic piece of art.
these are really well done. I would love to see some from the game Hawken.
Man I wanted to do this exact thing with Starcraft units, since no good miniatures of them exist, but I'm completely lacking in 3D modelling skills. These are fantastic though.
As a technical artist that has been works with 3ds max for years, and normal's with textures for game assets fairly often. I'd like to mention that the normal maps start as a blue hazy looking picture for height detail for shaders. But, if you filter that normal map through to its pure height map details you can make it a gray scale bump map. Then by using the modifier in 3ds max called tessellation with out smoothing edges you can increase the models faces, then using a displacement modifier to apply the details of the normal map directly to the model potentially saving hours for modeling work. Of course some details will need to be tackled with modeling, this trick will speed up the process. I would heavily recommend giving this a try, it may not be the be all fix all, but it will smooth the work flow out. I hope this was helpful! Best of luck, and may the force be with you!
"They revamped all the 'mechwarriors'."
Maaaan I remember watched this video right when it dropped. my dad knew I liked giant robots so he showed me a game called “MechWarrior Online” and it was completely free. You drive mechs and kick ass. Sounds awesome to me. And ofc I was too young and the game had far too much going on for me to ever hope of doing well at it at all. The controls are insane. And I collect action figures so I looked it up and boom, introduction to 3d printing. I’ve always wanted these exact ones in this video so bad. I’ve got to recreate them or something.
That Jenner is making that Atlas jealous.
+Sameji it's Sara Perres Jenner
OR... a new monster super jenner like the super nova???
Amazing Job Dude!!
that was really interesting! and i love the mechs!!!
That Atlas.... my god. haha. Beautiful.
Those are really awesome!
As somebody who remembers playing Mechwarrior Miniatures this inspires hope that the table top game will be remade for a new generation :)
Omg love that Atlas!
I saw a print of that Jenner a long time ago and wanted to print MW mechs ever since. Yours look fantastic.
I would love to finish all the parts for one of those mechs and than mold and cast them!
Great video :)
ValcroW in the flesh and blood! crazy that i have communicated so much on the ultimaker forum with him. such an amazing person in the world of 3D printing, and that so many companies shamelessly rip off his work. looking at you Maplin!
huge tested and mechwarrior fan. psyched to see worlds collide
Waiting to see these models equiped with servos! Would be really cool!
I've been working on a Griffin GRF-1E model myself for some time now. I want to print quite a bit larger than what he did here, at least twice as big. Maybe even bigger, but i'll decide that once i start to break down my finished model into the seperated stl files for printing.
these are freaking awesome, i still have mech warrior 4.
This is awesome. Mechwarrior 5 is out now, and uses the same assets.
Mechwarriors are the pilots... not the mechs.. >
You guys are fantastic, my 6 year old love a mech video games Now I can design one!!...Well I will try, your models are incredible thank you for sharing
Mechwarrior!!!!
AMAAZING! WOW! Well done! Any love for mechs from Robot Jox?
Jacky Wan his work is awesome!
Last starfighter shirt..... awesome.
Obviously nerdy, but when I heard him say the Mechwarriors had been re-done, I pictured this highly detailed little pilot sitting on the table.
Oh man, just a couple of weeks ago me and a couple of friends played mercenaries and just messed around on arena with dumb setups, it might not look fantastic by todays standards but it still has that nice level of complexity that seems super rare even in modern games
Omg... I want to print those right now!
Hey I had a quick question about the models. How durable are they and are they Reposable. And what printer would you recommend to use for those type of projects.
Those figures remind me of an old game on the Ps2, Robotech Battlecry.
I played it a bit as a kid, but never finished it because I got bored of it.
Ew, Robotech.
Long story between BattleTech and Robotech, mostly revolving around the US branch of Harmony Gold suing FASA, the owners of Battletech over some Battletech designs that were licensed from Harmony Gold Japan early on (such as the Marauder, which I believe is based on a Robotech Officer's Pod, among others) after Harmony Gold wanted to bring Robotech into the states. FASA lost, and the Macross/Robotech designs are not used in official work in their original form. Catalyst Game Labs, the new developers of BattleTech, are redesigning the so-called "Unseen" so they can start producing minis.
Are Amy of these files available to download?... I didn't see anything on the site that says whether they are or not
Well the reason he's making them is because licensing prevents it right?
I am beyond stoked you guys did this! I am a HUGE MWO fan! I wish I could afford a printer just to be able to build a model of the BNC ;)
+North Hatre I also was on that particular thread mentioned, really gotta get a printer UGH!!!!
Would definitely buy if on sale. :D
I like how he said he didn't want to make a tabletop size. WHY? Because it's already been done?! Battletech (Mechwarrior to the younger generations) was already a thing. They already had a tabletop game before they went to video games. And considering their scale (I forgot the size), they were pretty well detailed. Unlike the second iteration that was a larger scale "click" game. Had he known this, he wouldn't have had to use much of the video game files. He could've used the old miniatures and scanned them instead. But, he doesn't seem like that much of a gamer to have known that. And, for not being a model maker, he did a very decent job at painting them.
>Calling battlemechs "MechWarriors" REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
REEEEEEEE
REEEEEEEEEEEE
Sounds like someone who got paid to shill the game and has never actually played it.
I committed the same mistake... when I was 8yrs old and my mother language was Spanish... and I played MW3 in English
@@Kuraimizu9152 lol
Sarah's Jenner looks unbelievably good... Nice job pal !
This is probably one of the only reasons I'd actually want a 3D printer...
Wow, this stuff really reminds me of the MechCommander games, which coincidentally I replayed recently. Ah too bad I'm not too savvy on the 3D modeling/3D printing stuff.
Same universe, actually. Those 'Mechs, from left to right, are a Catapult, an Atlas, and a Jenner, and hopefully you recognize a couple of those names.
+KeiNovak How in Kerensky's name did you not make the connection, surat?
I made the connection. lol my "reminder" was more on the size/scale of the mech rather than which universe they are from.
Of course I know they are from the BattleTech Universe.
+Jamie Tysseling Clanner pls go and stay go. Exodus Road is thataway -->
inteli722 lol
Excellent! This was my absolute favorite game for the first Xbox. I used to play with my cousin online in California and I live in Montreal. We had great epic times playing together. I remember once I absolutely dominated with a bowman and his lava hammers. Not sure if they're called that.
I use fusion 360 i would like to find the opj model files and make some of my own, not sure how to get those but I will research when I have some time. Cool stuff and ideas. Get that imaagination working fellas 👏 🙏😃👍
Jacky, you didn't grab out the normal map and convert it to displacement to get the detail from that?
(I remember Battletech. I probably still have a mech sheet from it)
+Jeff Zugale Precisely what I thought too. I dont expect him to know too much either because he left his seams in. Which in model building is a super easy fix if you know what you doing. I.e, Warhammer
Wow so cool I want one
wow, I must print this too.. very cool !!
my last 3D print was a (bad print) IRON MAN ..uhhh
I've found that just doing a few coats of Mr. Surfacer virtually eliminates the print line stepping.
my 3d printing skills feel inadequate now..
for the last few months I have thought about getting a 3D printer, but I know all i'l endup making is drinks mats and picture frames and get fed up of it.
Gary Lowe you gotta be creative with it, that is for sure. ive been pringin for about a week on and off now and ive made a few parts for the printer itself, but you can make so much more! i also made my girlfriend a creative little bookmark, a chess pawn, a chip clip shaped like a shark, etc. the possibilities are endless if you think outside the box. i got my printer for 235, which is very resonable and ive got it printing reliably at decent quality. its a good choice if you dont want to spend much
+Gary Lowe you can go to thingavers and get a lot of stuff to print
and ripping models from games is easy most of the time
or tinkercad is free and not to hard to use to make easy things
john bryant I am not so good with computers. So I could go to the Website you mentioned and just choose something I liked and print it? I could do that an till I became more competent.
dragonslayer1483 and what is the name of you mechine?
+1 for best guest name on youtube today
I have a question, could I use a 3d scanner and printer to make my own custom parts for a model kit?... and I meaning can I scan a part, edit it in a 3d program and then print the edited part?
Shout Out to Sarah's Jenner! Nice to know this charity is still going strong.
Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that the 'mechs actually originate from BattleTech, while the models used are from Mechwarrior Online? It's like saying that a 3D printed X-Wing model is FROM "X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter".
The Battlemechs look nice, but if he initally wanted to make them table top size he could have just gotten the table top models from the game Battletech.
Next step would be to make RC versions of them.
Also I don't get why so many people confuse Mechwarriors with their Mechs, it's like they never bother to check the lore.
Nice to see Sarah Parries' Jenner still being honoured :)
More of this content guys.
Shawn, The T-Shirt your wearing. Where did you get it?
Posting this stuff on the Battletech forum gets you a ban. SADLY! Instead those chaps should finally check their quality management. Those 3d MWO mechs are golden! Love them. I wish I could buy them.
Out of curiosity, are the files for the models he printed available for download? I would really like to print some of them myself. :-)
Very well done. It's fdm right? But you can't see the layers almost at all.
Where can I get STL files from ?
where are the game assets? i am really interested to access the 3d models and compare their volume, because a lot of mechs are out of proportion based on their declared mass
Awesome work, I would love to see them in matching scale... better make the Atlas bigger :p - also on the subject of doing them in resin.... why not just print in resin?
Love the Star League shirt!
+Dwuhoo Damnit, I thought you were talking about a different kind of Star League
Now where can i find the STL files for these?
Wish I had the cash for one, love MechWarrior.
Does topology and polycount play a vital role in 3d printing?
Awesome stuff man! Like half the guys here, can you share the STL files?
Oh man, I extracted some MWO models for animation a couple years back, before I had a printer... Now I've gotta do this. Especially since-- to my utmost shame --it's been three months, and I still haven't used my new airbrush and compressor. :S So wanna print a Cataphract and paint it in my old tabletop merc group's livery. :3
I’d love to see Trad and Dugger, made them when I was a kid
This guy really loves to do things the hard way.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that has a bout of internal screaming when they call BattleMechs "MechWarriors"
'Mech = BattleMech (or OmniMech or IndustrialMech or CamelCaseMech) which are the stompy robots.
MechWarrior = The title given to the people who pilot them, just like how we have AeroJock for the pilots of AeroTech fighters.
him and frank should do a build where Jacky does modelling and prototyping, then Frank does resin casting and painting. kind of like the process of starting a new model all the way to reproducing copies of it.
You should put URLs from the show into the intro text.
Ooh look, all of the things I like in one video? Now we just need Patrick Norton in mass effect cosplay.
Does anyone know of tutorials that show how to design movable parts like what he uses?
What's the difference between the functionality of Fusion360 to the software you used?
Bump!!! Totally Treaking my Inner Geek!
If I ever 3D print an Atlas II action figure I will show it off, not making them for money, but for fun, and I will pose him pwning Clanners,
wellll as 4ok plauyer you must scape the seems of and this why we have green stuff still look good are right scail fore the game ? can do 28 mm ? or 135th ?
I want these!!!!
Ive been looking for this talent 4 a WHILE! Ive got a project I need help with Jackie
Nice! I remember playing an EGA pc game MechWarrior that had birds eye view. I even played the dice and paper game too. I think printing any action figure should be do in parts. I tried printing Samus Aran in one piece and failed.
Yes parting out a print definitely makes the whole process easier and better... Especially if your printer is prone to failing.
Surely, the Urbanmech is being reserved as the Magnum opus of Jackie's printing skills... Right?
teeehee I did this about two years ago on a solidoodle 3 with a spider via a friend's dx12 memory export. Soooo much cleanup...
These are finished better than mine though & mine is completely static
I would love to have a 7in model of a CPLT-A1 and CPLT-K2. K2 to be fit with a gauss rifle in each side torso and a medium laser in each arm.
Mechwarriors are the pilots not the mechs, God damn it!
Now, with a lot of extra capital, this could lead to a little renaissance of the table-top game, with much better interactivity in terms of representing actions and component damage, and superior aesthetics.
Anyone know what 3D modeling app he used, the app shown in this video?
he mentions it.
No they did not revamp all the mechwarriors in mechwarrior online. they revamped THE BATTLEMECHS in mechwarrior online. Mechs are the machines. Warriors are the human pilots.
Wait i watched this 4 years ago?..... Oh well.
It's... beautiful...
SHARE THE STL FILES :)
