  • In this video i show how to strike an arc with lincoln 6013 3/32" welding rods. I show a good practice that everyone should do called a pad of beads, a pad of beads is a good practice for striking an arc and running a bead on plate for surfacing and teaches you how to overlap beads for running multi-pass welds. this is a good practice for both new welders and experienced ones as well!
6013 is primarily a rod developed for sheet metal and thinner metals because it doesn't dig into and penetrate the base metal as well as some other rods but it is the rod most schools will start you off with because of the ease of striking the arc and it is easy to get a good looking weld with 6013.
The power source I used is a Lincoln ranger 225 engine driven welder. i have this welder on my welding rig "Big Blue" (1990 ford F350 dually with 7.3 IDI motor)

    Great vid, Adam!
I've got a question for you; just want to confirm: did you draw any particular pattern (curls, zig-zags) when dragging the rod, did you just simply drag it on a straight line? Cheers!

That’s a great question well everyone does it a little different but sometimes I do a straight drag and other times I do a little bit of a side to side motion, I believe back when I did this video I did a drag with a hesitation to let the weld puddle build up some.
