  • Part 3 of my surround sound playlist: • Surround Sound from PC... || Steps:
    1. Install pavucontrol (PulseAudio Volume Control)
    2. On the "Configure" tab, set the desired output profiles for your computer's sound devices
    3. On the "Input Devices" tab, you can control any hardware that is capable of recording audio (internal/external mic, e.g. analogue or USB)
    4. On the "Output Devices" tab, you can control any hardware capable of playback, e.g. your PC's HDMI controller or analogue audio controller.
    5. The "Recording" tab shows all running apps currently recording audio. Here, you can control where they are recording audio from (e.g. a mic, or whatever is currently playing on your PC). You can also change volume levels, mute etc. like on the other tabs.
    6. On the "Playback" tab, you see all running apps currently playing back audio. You can tell them which audio device to use, and control volume, mute etc. like on the other tabs.

It is in Windows too, in Sound window->Playback->Speakers properties (old looking UI, not the new WPF).

I am trying to use HDMI to connect to my AVR, when I open PAVUCONTROL the 5.1 and 7.1 modes are listed, but I cannot use them. The entry for that is listed as either "disconncted" or "unavailable". HDMI 2 (which is a Dsiplay Port) will play sound if Stereo Format is selected, but wont play in surround modes. I can't find a way to make "unavailable" modes "available". Most of the lilnks tell me to launbch PAVUCONTROL and Select the device, but not how to enable a disabled device. Any thoguhts on this?

Hi, very nice Video. I use the pulse audio on linux mint. And when i select the 7.1 hdmi output, every stereo playback (spotify, mp3, youtube) comes over all Speakers. But if i use stereo hdmi, there will be no 5.1 or 7.1 with films. Its totaly annoying. I want only want Stereo and no upmix. I couldnt find any help with google. Do you have any advice how to set this up? THX a lot!

Hey, I know this answer is late, but FWIW, yeah unfortunately you do need to manually select stereo or 5.1/7.1 through Ubuntu's own sound settings before you play back a file. I made myself a keyboard shortcut for the command, "cinnamon-settings sound" to bring up the sound config, that way I can do this really quickly. The command works in Mint, I would presume in Ubuntu it's something like "gnome-settings sound".

I did so in 2009 and never looked back. That said, I dual-boot with Windows because I'm a gamer, and even though there's Steam on Linux, the selection of games is still very limited and oftentimes, features don't work... e.g., no surround sound in Source games (Half Life 2 etc), missing controller support etc. Apart from that, I really enjoy working with Linux! You should give it a try - just make a new partition for it on your primary hard drive and install it alongside Windows!

I want to do all my gaming on Linux (Pop OS) with Steam, but i have only one problem, i have a expansive 5.1 speaker set, and i cannot get analog 5.1 working in Pop OS, not with my Creative Sound Blaster Z, if i select 5.1 in setting audio, he will go to another audio card, stereo is not a problem or even left and right speaker with center speaker, but i can NEVER get back speakers to work, i tried everything many hours and days, with Pulseaudio volume control, and alsamixer and put it on 6
channels, also did nothing, still have only audio from 3 speakers, and also tried it with my onboard audio chip, the Realtek ALC1200, same, but cannot even see 5.1 or 7.1 in setting audio, and also have sound coming from 3 speakers, i have tried everything i could find and nothing worked, please can you help?
