    Is this a real Speedmaster? Does this watch devalue the luxury priced Omega Speedmaster? What is the quality level on the Moonswatch? Is it close to Omega levels? Will this be available on Swatch's website in the future? Are current Omega owners buying this product? Did the Swatch Group botch the roll out? Was this an overall good move or bad move for the brand? I share my thoughts...
    Thanks Dan for letting me borrow your Mission to the Moon!

    Just treat it like the Seiko Tuna. There is the budget Tuna (Solar Tuna, Baby Tuna around $250) all the way up to the Spring Drive Tuna (around $5000). If Seiko can give us consumers a Seiko Tuna at multiple price range for Seiko Tuna lovers, Omega can do it as well for the SpeedMaster Lovers. Cheers!

      @@ieltsvisuals8861 As i have explained, for the Seiko Tuna, they are available at different price points so that the masses from the normies to the rich can 'buy in' to the Tuna ecosystem. Its all about the marketability of the Tuna brand. Omega/Swatch i believe wants to go this route and have a cheap speedy to compliment a pricey speedy so that more people can 'buy in' to the Speedmaster ecosystem. Who doesn't want an authentic Omega Speedmaster for cheap? Thus the crazy queues worldwide. As for Omega/Swatch, if they can sell an Omega branded Swatch watch for twice the actual cost of a similar model Swatch and profit greatly from it, why not? Ultimately its a win win for all parties. Consumers get a Speedmaster without breaking the bank. Omega/Swatch is able to sell a relatively cheap watch for almost twice its cost and they know it will sell like hotcakes.

    I agree, Bruce, on the idea that this doesn’t devalue Omega. Yes, the design language is the same but it’s different enough and is 100% not a replacement for a luxury product. Now if it was $1500, made of steel without Omega-level finishing, perhaps still an affordable quartz movement, that’s another story…

    Nice video, I agree with almost every point you've made. I've been really into watches and started my collection around 3-4 years ago, I love the Speedy and the sapphire sandwich is actually next on my list, then I heard these were releasing and it was a no-brainer, too bad I'm nowhere near a store so I have to wait until the online orders are available to get mine though :/
    The launch could've been handled so much better, the hype is great, I still think a lot of the people that went to buy them were flippers though, they probably thought it was a limited edition release.
    I don't think these devalue Omega at all, I think it's a great move making this icon a more accessible price range and get more people into watches. I know the quality is not going to be anywhere close to an actual Omega piece but it's all just a fun and affordable project that has made a huge impact.

I suppose if you were snobby you could say when your out and about people may at first glance mistake it for a “real” speedmaster which, some may get a kick out of. Personally I have a 1970 Speedmaster and can afford another one, but I will be buying one of these when I can get my hands on one, as it’s just fun, looks cool and has a great story to tell. I highly doubt this will tarnish the reputation of Omega. I think it’s a smart move. It could be the gateway for many younger people to eventually owning a “real” Omega. They could venture to expanding the concept to the Seamaster Omega x Swatch collab too: there are 31 varieties of the Sea theme for them to think about (e.g., Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red, Baltic, Arabian, South China, Celebes, etc). Another one is Railmaster collab series: the likes of Amtrak, British, Eurostar, Trenitalia, Oriental Express, SBB, etc). Better yet, the Constellation collab series would do great with so many possible variants.

Not sure if they will come back where Swatch could have gotten the money, sold the watches, and could have knocked the flippers off their game. Maybe wrong but may have worked out better. I have a Speedy, I like the colors, I think this is fun for me and my kid to get a watches and not break the bank. Also can't see Omega doing something like this with their line so should be a win...just not sure how big.

    Great vid Bruce! I for one think Swatch should never have put the words Omega and speedmaster on the dial and strap of a 260 usd watch. With that said, if this Swatch didn’t say those words. NO ONE would want it. It’s a money grab and marketing Genius by Swatch. 🍻

  • @fitetransport-eydj6203

    I think this is a great marketing tool for both Omega & Swatch. It’s introducing the young generation to the watch world. These kids are wanting and are able to purchase trendy fashions. I think the watch industry is on the verge of exploding. They are seeing the entertainment and sports celebrities rocking Patek Philippe, Richard Mille, Audemars Piquet & others. This is a gateway to the ground floor of becoming a watch enthusiast

    I enjoyed your review however it isn't really a Speedmaster. So I don't own one of either, but whilst a Speedie is built to last, I really don't see it being the case in this instance. Whilst I will not begin to rag on the MoonSwatch, I do feel that a plastic watch with a quartz mov't is far from The Omega. Lucky the mother company is Swatch to enable it to happen. It will always be known as the MoonSwatch so I can't see it harming the Omega brand. Resin cases have been built to last viz Casio products over the decades, and this being 'bio-ceramic' well, it should last for a while - unless the colour comes off with use. The actual case has come straight from the blueprints of the Speedie so pretty true to form on that one. Finally. better people buy one of these than a 'smart watch'. Swatch saved the Swiss with Quartz, maybe they will do the same by distancing people from the Smart. BTW, I think Neptune is my fav colour. Cheers.

  • @tipoomaster

    • @lukewalker1051
      @lukewalker1051 Před 2 lety

      The quartz movement in this watch is more accurate, lower cost, requires less maintenance, doesn't require winding and resetting and much cheaper to replace then any mechanical movement. The fact it is quartz is your problem. The most accurate watches are quartz.
      I think this new watch release is a poor marketing decision and these will end up little kids watches as starter watches to the collecting hobby.

  • @RedwoodAggie
    @RedwoodAggie Před 2 lety +1

    I think this is a great introduction to the Speedmaster (and even Omega) to many people, and also to getting a regular watch on people's wrists. Even though I liked watches for years (as in owning multiple/looking at them/buying, NOT spending hours on on them on the internet like I do now), I never heard of the Speedmaster/Moonwatch until WELL into adulthood. I certainly knew of Swatch though, and it was my first Swiss watch as a kid. We have a Swatch boutique by my house in the U.S., but they reportedly only had 45 per a couple of posters that were in line early. The line was easily 1,000+ people when I got there, so I just chatted with a few people, and took pics of the line. Apparently some "mall walker" people got in other entrances and lined up at the store ahead of the people in line overnight and wouldn't get out of line. People there most of the night didn't even get watches. I feel sorry for them that it was handled so poorly. I don't think there's any way they could have expected 1,000+ people, but we're in a 6 million+ population metroplex. 45 definitely was not sufficient. At least give us a few hundred. Hopefully they will boost up deliveries in the next couple weeks. It certainly should be easier to increase production on a plastic quartz watch coming off what is likely an automated line than a mechanical watch.

    Why this watch is important ? There are queues of hundreds of people standing in line to pay over $250 for a plastic watch with a quartz moment. Literally 2 years ago people were saying the tradition watch was dead because of smart watches. Now realise, that there are actual smart watches cheaper than this, and despite the fancy hardware inside nobody is queuing to buy them like how people are for this MoonSwatch.
    If thats not a win for traditional watch collectors then maybe you need a new hobby because you dont really want your hobby community to grow and succeed.
