- I went to Ghana for the #YearOfReturn and had an amazing time! This Ghana vlog series will take you through my time in this amazing country. First up, travel with me from JFK to IST and then IST to Accra via Turkish Airlines economy class. I'll show you my airplane skincare routine, my anxiety with flying (haha), what it's like to fly economy class on Turkish Airlines, what the IGA Lounge at Istanbul airport is like, a quick tour of my room at Fiesta Residences in Accra, Ghana and more!
My entire trip was booked and curated by Gone 2 Ghana: tsabd.com/2SRN827. I heard about this because some of my blogger friends went last year and I said YOLO and booked my travel. Gone 2 Ghana booked everything: my flights, hotel, group transportation, activities, food, etc. All I did was pay my money and show up...lol. There were parts of the trip I would tweak had I did it on my own, but since planning trips is not my favorite thing, this was a good option for me.
What is the Year of Return? 2019 marked 400 years since the first enslaved Africans were taken from West Africa to the US. There was a call for those descendants to return "home" in 2019. This is one of the reasons why you saw so many of your fave Black celebrities and influencers in Ghana this December.

OHHHHH YOU WENT TO MY COUNTRY!!! AKWAABA! EYYYYY!!!! Can't wait to see the rest
PhoebePebbles thank you my love!!!!
Awww. I wanted to hug you. I feel you. I tend to get anxious with the littlest turbulence and try to deep breathe through while tightening my core and praying at the same time. Thank you for sharing your story and you didn’t let your fear or anxiety get the best of you and prevent you from going on this momentous trip. You DID IT! TWICE!! That’s a big feat.
Awwww I definitely would have ugly cried if I got the hug...lol. Thank you, boo!!! I guess all the anxiety from this trip did me in because I’m usually fine when I fly.
Welcome back to the States next time you can fly with South Africa airways from Virginia (Washington Dulles airport) straight to Ghana 10 hours, no stopping, no nothing.
You can also fly with Delta airlines from NYC straight to Ghana. Very soon Ghana national airline is going to start from Baltimore MD, Providence RI and NYC (JFK). It's very tiresome when you fly via Europe
Aww Danielle, Its totally understandable to be anxious. I'm used to flying nonstop with delta to Nigeria, its 13hrs. I have a savings plan for travel because if there isnt leg room business class is a must.
It's normal to be anxious and emotional given the hours flying, as well as the anticipation, excitement and unknown factors. Here's to a safe, enjoyable and enlightened travel. Peace and Blessings. Namaste
Sunflower Butterfly thank you!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
@@styleandbeautydoctor you're very welcome 🌻🦋
Nice to see you back also Danielle
Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️
Nice video can’t wait to go back to Ghana
Love from African Student Ghanaian CZcamsr
Thank you!!! I’m excited to go back as well ❤️❤️
Bless you, because I truly feel you on the anxiety. I don't like long flights, multiple connections or airports in general. It's so hectic and out of our control. Even when flights are delayed or they make us miss connections, they often display so little empathy. That said, I want to travel more in 2020 -- and *not* just for work, which is the main reason I travel now.
M Wms thank you!!! I’m typically fine when I fly but this trip gave me anxiety...lol. There was so much involved but thankfully I got through it without any issue.
Which locations are on your list for travel?
@@styleandbeautydoctor Mexico, Italy...and TBD! Glad you arrived safely and I hope you're having fun! I once had an 8-hour direct flight to Madrid and somehow made it without screaming, crying and crawling up the aisle. lol
M Wms ohhh I’ve never been to Italy! Would love to visit! lmaooooo-yassss for making it through your 8 hr flight 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
Can’t wait to see more of the trip. These videos are about to be a movie. Happy New Year!! TFS
Haha heyyy boo! Hope you had a great holiday!!!
Hey, Danielle. Thanks for taking us with you to Ghana for the year of return. I get anxious before a flight too, so I completely understand. I found the best way for me to calm the anxiety is to exercise. I try to find time to do a challenging workout for a half-hour at home before a flight, it helps to expend the energy. I look forward to the rest of the vlogs and your thoughts on the trip.
Thank you so much!!! Great tip-I’ll try this should I get anxious like that again ❤️❤️
I had a layover in Istanbul en route to JFK a couple years ago and it was super stressful (searched and screened several times, far distance between connecting flights, poor airport layout, etc.). I had to remind myself not to black out because I was in a middle eastern country, but glad to see you had a much better experience. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
Phew coming back home was a mess because we had a tiiiight connection. We only had like 14 mins to board the flight to NYC after we landed in Istanbul. If I do a coordinated group trip like this again, I’m booking my own flight. I would have also loved the option of picking a much better seat or even see what the biz class options were. The group who coordinated my trip did everything.
Happy New Year Babez!! I’m Excited to see this travel Vlog. I’m sure all of you had an Amazing time
Thank youu! Happy New Year 😘😘😘
You know I missed you💋 I never been on a plane ever can’t wait to travel in 2020 I don’t care where but somewhere lol
Kianna D there’s so much to see just here in the US! Start with short trips first and then work your way up! There are tons of places I want to see here.
Kianna D and thanks 😘😘😘
Get credit card with miles bonus offers. I got 50,000 miles signing bonus when I opened Amex, and Citi credit card. You can redeam.for round trip tickets domestically, and free hotel stays. As black foreigner, living the US past 5 years, I learned you can get anything you want in the US. Do your research. Best wishes
The Style and Beauty Doctor I will I can’t wait to get flying I want to go to Costa Rica where my mom is from I still have family out there it’s a gorgeous place
Toral Toral agree! I got a ton of bonus miles when I got those same exact cards 🙌🏿
Im late but I'm here! So happy to see you back!!
Heyyyy boo!!!! Thank youuu ❤️❤️❤️ Better late than never 😉
It’s on my bucket list.
Happy belated anew Year Danielle! Aww...I've never had anxiety flying but I had a totally unexpected panic attack once driving on a road trip🥵 and it really threw me for a loop! Glad you were ok in the end. Excited to watch your ghana vlogs, and was excited to see that you travelled with Hayat Rida - one of my favourite bloggers on IG👌🏿 Blessings🙂
Happy New Year, boo!!! That anxiety will creep up on you sometimes! Thankfully it all turned out well ❤️❤️
I enjoyed your vlog. My youngest uncle is only 4 years older than my sister. They use to go to the club together back in their 20’s. I have been to Africa but only North Africa Egypt, & Morocco. Would love to visit Ghana, Nigeria, & South Africa. Happy New Year 🎆
LV7095 LV thank you!!! Hey, boo!!! How was Egypt? I have Morocco as a strong possible for travel this year!
Great you made it to Ghana
Nii Ayi 🙏🏿❤️❤️
@@styleandbeautydoctor you're always welcome. I just dm you on instagram. Please check
As new subscriber, I am living your content. Yes, I am buying the Goop sunscreen. ❤
Toral Toral thank youuuu!
Ty is from Baltimore like me!!! It’s so cool to see you all together traveling! Very inspirational
Imani Rashaad love me some Ty! Have known her for yeaaaars ❤️❤️❤️
The Style and Beauty Doctor I follow her on IG. She seems like a real down to earth person! Makes sense to me you guys would be friends 🥰
Imani Rashaad she really is! 🙌🏿❤️
Awwwww, I was tearing up with you! The longest plane ride I can stand is six hours. I gotta get over it cuz I’m determined for my kids to see the world. Can’t wait to see more in this series. 😘
BrownFaceTV hey boo!!! Aww thanks! Yes six hours is ideal for me. I’ve done some 9-10 hr ones in the past where I had zero anxiety, but this one had me so nervous beforehand. And then it turned out all fine...lol.
Any bucket list destinations for you and the kids?
I’m here for these Ghana flights
I just returned today and I’m surprised I didn’t see you in Accra. Everyone was on my nonstop flight from ACC to JFK (Jackie Aina, Ebro, etc.)!!! I did nonstop flights from JFK going & returning. The flight was 9hrs going & 11hrs coming back. Accra is so small (not really, but everyone going the same places) we would see folks everyday. I have decided after this trip that any long haul international trips will be done in at least business class only! That 11hrs in economy was tough! God will make a financial way 🙌🏾
Sincerely AJG heyyy! I went on a coordinated group trip (deets in the description box) and didn’t book my travel so didn’t have control over my flight schedule. If I did I would have done a nonstop flight as well and yes, definitely try to do business class because lawdamercy. I was able to get a more legroom seat on the flight from Istanbul to Accra and more legroom seats on both legs traveling back home.
Can't wait to see the rest. Your hydrating skin routine prior to boarding was so on point. When I flew to Morocco, I felt the same way and it was nowhere near as long as your flight was. Was this a brand trip?
Krys_tal thank you! Nope not a brand trip at all-would have had to disclose if it were. Every single penny came out of my pocket 😩 But it was curated and planned by a group called Gone 2 Ghana.
Your skin is beautiful!
LaTisha Wilson thanks so much!!!
I have the travel bug big time with no money. 😩 Everything looks so great. Can’t wait for more videos!
Awww-would you consider local travel? There’s a lot you can explore right in your own city or neighboring city. I did a staycation here in NYC a few years ago and it was so much fun! Got to play tourist for a bit.
The Style and Beauty Doctor I hope to be able to do just that!
Tia you will! 🙌🏿❤️❤️
Im thinking great nephew is the correct term lol. I understand your anxiousness with your flight. I traveled to Aruba last month was extremely nervous since I’ve never flown longer than 3 hours. Can’t wait to see more from your trip.
chocolatenbeautiful hey, boo!!! How was Aruba?
The Style and Beauty Doctor Hey hun, it was absolutely amazing 85 degrees and beautiful people. The people there are very welcoming too.
chocolatenbeautiful ohhh yasss! So happy you enjoyed it ❤️❤️
And your skin looks amazing btw.
Thank youuuu!
@@styleandbeautydoctor you’re welcome
I understand the anxiety. I live in Sydney Australia and visit my family in Barbados. Usually takes between 3 to 4 flights to get there!
Deborah phew! I pray for you for every time you visit your fam, boo! I want to go back to Australia now that I’m an adult, but I would need one of those Emirates type first class suites to get through 🤣🤣🤣 And I cannot afford that mess by far. I need miles on miles on miles lol
We went to Australia back when I was like 11/12 for a school trip. We had maaaad connecting flights and I must have had some weird childhood bravery because I do not know HOW I did all those flights back then lol
@@styleandbeautydoctor You're so right, I was lucky this time around. God must have heard my prayers. Qantas had a business class sale. So my 13 hour flight from San Fran to Sydney will be ok
Deborah niiiice! I’ve been watching a bunch of flight videos on CZcams and Qantas has a nice biz class from what I’ve seen! Enjoy it ❤️❤️❤️
Happy New Year! I'm so glad you're sharing this historical trip with us Danielle. I'll actually be travelling to South Africa in December on a cruise that leaves from Cape Town and will hit up four other ports throughout the country over 8 days. Did you have to take any shots before travelling to Africa?😁
Stephanie Cole happy new year, boo!!! Omg that sounds awesome! Do you plan on documenting your trip?
Yup, had to get a yellow fever shot (which I had already gotten over ten years ago but lost the paperwork smh. They just changed it that a yellow fever shot is good for life no matter when you got it) and was also recommended to get a Typhoid shot. I also took malaria pills before, during, and after. But that was specific to Ghana. Shots and other requirements can vary from country to country.
@@styleandbeautydoctor No, I'm not active on social media so I'll only be documenting the trip via pictures I take on my phone. LOL :-)
Happy 2020! (4 days in...lol!) I'm already trying to play catch up, this year. Thanks for sharing your travels with us. I'm inspired to use my passport to go somewhere further (farther?) than Canada in the near future.
Claire Thompson happy 2020!!! Saaame. My 2020 starts closer to Feb lol.
Where would you like to go this year? What’s on your bucket list?
@@styleandbeautydoctor Switzerland. The Alps, the chocolate, the cuckoo clocks and chalets.
Claire Thompson ahhhh so fun! You’ll definitely get there 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
Welcome to Africa...............
Thank youuuu!
Girl..I had tears in my eyes with you. Not sure if I could of done that flight with my long legs and circulation. I would have definitely needed my compression socks🙄
theariesnme phew! That first flight was rough! I had my legs ALL THE WAY in the aisle but also had to keep moving them so people could pass. The flight from IST to Accra was much better because I got a more leg room seat. But thankfully I slept through most of the two flights.
Fabulous!
❤️❤️
NotificationGang is here here!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾❤️❤️❤️❤️👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
Kat H ayeeeeee * Dancehall music horns * lmaooo 😘😘
Awww, I was excited for you! I think people do too much on the plane, and not enough prep at home. I wouldn’t want to touch my face on the plane. It’s not clean enough. Were all the direct lights from JFK to Accra booked? I’m going in October, but from Cali, no direct flight options.
Nubianette thanks, boo!!! I can understand skincare touch-ups to hydrate especially for those with dry skin and for sunscreen on longer flights (if the sun is out) for everybody, but to me the airplane environment is not ideal for a full-on routine for me.
I didn’t book any of this travel so no clue what was all booked or not-the group who coordinated our trip (listed them in the description) booked everything including flight. If it were up to me, I would have done the Delta direct flight from JFK to Accra, but I can’t imagine how much more expensive that would have been and maybe harder to coordinate for a large group like ours. Plus with year of return, I imagine flight options weren’t ideal. But I have no idea because I just paid and showed up...lol
The Style and Beauty Doctor I’ve been researching for over a year. The JFK flight WAS $800-$1200, non-stop. Anyway, can’t wait to see what you got up to.
Nubianette yeah, like I said, I didn’t book it so not sure if the direct flight made sense for booking our entire group. Maybe the coordinators had a special deal or something with Turkish Airlines 🤷🏾♀️
Africans are used to long and expensive flights. I know you enjoyed the flight
Really? smh...everywhere is a walking distance if you have time. Food for thought. 👍🏾
Nice 😍
I understand the anxiety before flying so just pray and God will take care of everything just wondering how much was your shower in Istanbul?
Natlee Blair-Acquah thank you!!! The shower was included in my lounge fee. Think I paid like $65 USD for lounge access.
#Ghana ❤️

Welcome to Ghana u just have yourself a new subscriber me lol
Thanks!!!
Hey girl, hey!!! I had a lot of travel anxiety as well...I don't know why bc this is my third time in Africa, and this was the shortest flight. We had a direct flight from DC to Accra. Arriving and getting through Kotoka Airport was a fine. I thought the airport was going to be CRAZY and unorganized like it was when I traveled to Nigeria twice. I was pleasantly surprised in Ghana. We saw those skinny Santas too..they had me laughing so hard. I LOVE reliving my recent trip via your vlogs. Thanks!!!!
Hey boo! Aww yay @ reliving your trip through my vlogs! Kotoka airport is SO beautiful!!! Even more when you leave and they get you in and on your own very quickly. Loved that! Our airports can take a note from them...lol
I'm having a serious anxiety disorders for a year now
I’m so sorry! Have you seen anyone about it?
#YearOfReturn ✊🏽
Everything Kash ❤️❤️
I hate flying. I don’t care that it’s the safest way to travel blah blah blah 😂😂. It just feels unnatural being up in the air for hours. I wanna get to on the ground as soon as possible. And prayyyy the entire flight lol. For 2020 maybe I’ll learn to calm down cause I have no choice but to fly😂
Haha exactly! I had a lot going through my mind and it was just TEW much lol
Infact,I wander why some black peoples in Americas says they are not Africans or are not from Africa,as soon as I saw your video I shouted because you look right exactly like my junior sister. In this world blood is thicker than water. We can never look like Japanese,Chinese,Koreans,Indians,Europeans nor Indonesians. We are blacks and every black person is from Africa period !!!!!
I can’t speak for everybody, but I think it’s because so many can’t trace where in Africa they’re from. Then there’s the animosity that exists between some Africans and those in the diaspora.
And heyyy cousin! Lol
Big ugly cry lol🤣🤣 I hate crying in front of ppl once a tear forms iam out to the bathroom or I been like I need my allergy meds 😂
Kianna D lmaooooo word! I gotta stare into the light hard to stop the tears 🤣🤣🤣🤣
