Love that thumbnail. . . ! Beautiful plane !
Thanks Jesse, hope all is well. I'm going to join Barney at the Pirates float and fly this weekend if it isn't too rainy.
@@DaveMerc well that sounds like fun ! Wish i did t live so far away !
Same here Jesse. We could make some great videos!
I was taught to start at the rear so theres no edges to flick up on landing,i thought with water it would certainly apply as theresgoing to be water forced into those overlapped edges.
Also dont get too hot on the iron, around 145 ish and no less than 140 ,go to 150 ish for a final "finishing blast" real quick and no pauses or stopping with the movement, dont touch the painted foam at all, stop 1 cm from the edge and you can stick it when you do the overlap.
Good work Dave, you really need to get the temp right on the iron to keep it from melting the foam. That should work great on the water.
Thanks Vern. Your right, the dial on my iron has to be set to center and no more or the foam will burn.
@36:07 I distinctly hear you say "you can't protect against *Pilot Era*" - Are you calling me old? ;-)
I see your bird is looking great, and protected in all the right places. Make sure you plug those weep holes on the bottom of the wings, where the spars are (squeeze a little E6000 or Foam-Tac in them, first, to stick those spars in place). Otherwise water will collect in your spar channels, adding a few unwanted grams. And you probably aren't taking those wings off, lol.
So far mines gotten it's FPV gear installed, FC is in and getting ready for lamination. I've got the same iron and 1.7mil film, but am curious what temps you used? I don't recall ever laminating a painted EPO plane before. I slapped a piece on the leading edge and top of the vertical stabilizer first, but that was 99% sticker.
Captain Sully made a perfect water landing in the Hudson river and they still tried to nail him for pilot error.
I keep the iron knob in the center position and that seems to work YMMV
So you put FPV in a dragonfly or was it something else?
What setting do you have your iron set to? Do you change temperature for different thickness laminate?
I have the iron set to center (half-way) but YMMV. No I don't change for 3 mil or 1.7 mil
Hi Dave, how long will that film last before it starts peeling off? Good video, thanks.
Not sure, it hasn't ever peeled off for me. If it did it's easy to fix with an iron.
Looks good Dave! Any problems with the lam in water?
The lam has worked great on all my float planes in the past. Hopefully it won't effect the boat plane on on take off. We shall see!
I prolly should’ve laminated the floats for my Tundra. They’re a bit scraped up from icy snow!
@@TheAdkFlyer10 I've fixed scraped or chunked EPO with really light drywall putty. Next time you're at the hardware store, pick up a container - it's amazing how light it is! It's even the same color as bare EPO. Then definitely laminate :-)
Yup, I’ve used the lw spackle to repair epo. Never laminated over it, but that’s a good idea!
Temperature?
Phoenix Flight Simulator went out of business years ago. Before going out it was superior to Real Flight with many more planes and tons of options.
Do you know any simulators that are inexpensive or free at this time?
@@DaveMerc here's a review of one. Not many on the market that are inexpensive.
