  • What is a stamp show? Take a trip with me to the 'Here be Dragons' stamp show in Columbus, Ohio 2018. While I explore the show, I meet and interview some of the hosts and learn more about the world of philately.

    I'm portuguese but I live in France . Love going to Stamp shows , stamp fairs , meet the people , see new stamps ( that happens all the time ) . Unfortunetly I believe collectors are aging and the new generations don 't seem to apreciate anymore stamps . It's a shame because we can learn so much with this hobby about countries , their culture , their history and other things .

    One of my greatest mistakes in stamp collecting is waiting till I retired to join the APS. I am 73 now and have been a member for only three years. The APS monthly journal publication just by itself is worth the cost of membership. But they provide a ton of additional good stuff. They have this wonderful place near Philadelphia which is the location of their library. Visiting this place would make a good episode for the series. The dragon stamps certainly have blazing color combinations. Thanks for showing us the wonder of the stamp show.

    A lot of the newer US stamps smear the red ink cancels like the additional ounce and white and red pear 10c stamp. Found great items at stamp shows.

    Some years ago I had my baby son and 3 year old daughter with me in a stampshow in Denmark, there was a large exhibition from Greenland, including a stuffed polar bear in a standing position and a man from Greenland performing a traditional drum dance/song, while many of the things were on stamps, but seeing the real stuff was most pleasing, for my daughter aswell, altho she was abit worried about the man with his song/dance "ondt i maven" pain in the stomach" was her response. but the polarbear stuffed and on stamps really did make a "wow" moment for her.

    I collected GB 1840-1980 Average collection, basic specimens. I loved going to stamp fairs for two reasons. 1) To look to fill gaps in my collection within my small budget. 2) To get up close and personal to stamps i could never afford to complete the early years.
    Everyone has a personal favourite. I saved hard and finally acquired a fine example of the KGV 1929 £1 PUC commemorative. It cost me £400, a terrific amount of money at the time of purchase and nearly four times the price of my first second hand car such was my passion to own it! In my opinion one of the most beautiful designs of any postage stamp. A time when designs were created by craftsmen Not one of your photographic sticky labels of today that are constantly churned out to commemorate virtually any old event to part the collector from his hard earned cash. The genuine passion of the collector is now being exploited, as far as I'm concerned, purely for financial reasons.

    The type of fun and popular content that your channel is presenting is what the philatelic community of dealers and stamp issuing agencies should have been doing decades ago.
    It is my belief that this community of businesses and agencies is a big part of why philately is today a ghost of what it used to be decades ago. They largely failed to inspire new and young collectors.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you, I agree. I would like to see the businesses and agencies taking a more active role to this type of presentation of philately... There are so many more tools available to them to introduce the hobby to new and young collectors.

    that "1940's stamp" is not a real issue Nice to see Stamp Art dealer shown, A & D deserve that too. As the exhibit frame person in LA, exhibits are great to visit - don't worry if it goes over your head in just the first few pages, appreciate and absorb what you can (45 years in and many still bewilder me!) A show is a good place to learn about odd stamps you have or find elusive items. I always enjoy meeting other collectors or exhibitors and talking about collecting interests. I like to overhear others talking too, I learn even more...

    Stamp Fairs are attended for a variety of reasons, in my case, I enjoy meeting people and exchanging knowledge, for many though equipped with a "wants list" and a pocket full of cash, they are ripe for being ripped off, and there are many, many areas where this is possible, and that is why the collector should read, sadly the take up of literature is low, and only a few bother to look at the exhibits. They return home with their purchases, cash depleted, their knowledge not improved.
