Personally, I use whatever the owner's manual says because that's the way it was designed.
I think he’s saying you should just use engine oil for the power steering pump AND transmission, but when I did that everything started smoking. I’ll try putting trans fluid in the engine next.
Yep.
My power steering pump comes factory filled with ATF, GM. Recommended ATF lol
Mine is the same! Malibu 2013. I am confused now! Should I replace it with PSF? or refil with ATF ?
@@ipains GM have used ATF for a long time in their power steering systems. If it comes from the factory with it in, the engineering team designed it to be used for a reason, many GM models were converted over to ATF by the dealerships. If your vehicle has ATF in it, do not change it.
Me too
False, your vehicle came with ATF that is accurate. But It is NOT recommended. GM issued Numerous TSBs overriding the spec of fluid for ps systems. Dex III is out. PS Fluid is in.
@@CT_Taylor I've wondered about this for a while. The borate esters in ATF are good for reducing friction and wear, but maybe they just aren't quite as good as a high ZDDP anti-wear hydraulic oil (which is what power steering fluid is). I've heard of a lot of cases of power steering boxes using ATF experiencing more wear than the same ones filled with power steering fluid.
Hey Josh, what about actual manufacturers like GM and Ford that say specifically on the unit itself, "use ATF only?"I have run DexII for decades without issues. If it was bad would there not be more failures? From my understanding, you should not mix between P/S fluid and ATF.
I think Toyota would disagree with you.
My comment is actually about a Toyota 👍💯
I have had to use trans fluid because my rack seal broke.. It got me 43 miles to home and worked fine.. Thank god.
I seem to have a silver aluminum particle dust in my power steering fluid when I shine a flashlight in the Reservoir also I get a whining noise and after about 30 minutes of driving can you tell me the cause of this it’s only a two-year-old unisteer performance rack and pinion system
Ford has ATF that also says power steering fluid on the bottle
That is what I used.Mercon V ATF and power steering fluid .
So i have a problem, i removed the manual pump and installed an electic power steering pump. The wlectric pump take fully syntetic oil but the power steering was with ATF liquid, What should i use?
Thanks for Video..which power steering fuild is butter for porsche cayenne turbo V8 4.8L 2009...do u think..
is it ok to use central hydraulic fluid instead of power steering fluid?
So what you're saying is I cannot use vegetable oil in my steering pump how about sunflower oil
So I have a 2002 Honda..slow leak of power steering fluid..can I use ATF?
Oh one more question if I ran out of vegetable and flower oil do you think I can use baby oil my truck loves it when I rub baby oil all over it 👍🤔🤔
2015 town and country oem is ATF 4, explain why if it is not good for any powersteering pump?
My Ford ranger's manual says to use ATF in the power steering
This is funny. Toyota recommends I use dextran three automatic transmission fluid in my 97 Tacoma and my 2010 Tacoma. I’m pretty sure if Toyota tells me to use it in their truck I’m gonna trust them a little more LOL
Exactly now I’m just fucking confused
Depends on the automaker. Using amsoil atf in my Toyota ps system for years. No issues.
This is what i don't understand, this guy has another video that says you shouldn't use Synthetic power steering fluid , amsoil makes one, lucas does. And he says at 1:03 that No one says on their bottle automatic trans fluid bottles dont also state for power steering fluid. Makes me wonder if he knows what he's talking about.
The filler cap on my Tacoma PS fluid says "ATF fluid only"
@@pustuleous atf is flammable, while most purpose ps fluid is not. Same stuff for the most part
Great tip!!
2008 Toyota Sienna manual says Dextron 2 or 3? 🤔😬😳🤓?
Toyota recommends Dex iii, however when you see a new Toyota at the dealership those new Toyotas do not have red Dex iii from the factory. It’s a gold oil like color.
Ive used power steering fluid in a ton a vehicles that state to use ATF. Never had an issue immediately or in the long run. People like to over react over the smallest things. For example over filling your oil by 1/2 a quart... people freak the F out real quick when in reality it is not a big deal. Its always the people who trade their cars in every couple years that think they know it all because they havent had a vehicle break down. Own one till it hits 300k then you can come talk to me about what works.
i have a 99 f150. it states to use ATF.
Used power steering fluid and steering pump whined. Went to Mazda and they told that the correct fluid is ATF DEX III or higher. Replaced and power steering feels like a dream! Never use just "power steering" fluid, it will kill your pump because it doesn't have the correct additives to keep it clean and lubricated.
BMW service said it same too. Always use ATF Dex III
I think the Problem is , this fellow should have stated at the start of the video :
If you use our Power Steerings Pumps - what i'm about to say for fluid applies.
If you use a stock OEM power steering pump, use whats in the manual.
But he didn't do that, and that's caused confusion here, or at least in part 1.
This issue is where he stated "all power steering pumps use...." Full stop
what about a BMW rack that says to use ATF?
Funny how we package up in little bottles various products/fluids, give them a fancy label and name and then to top it off, add a high sticker price.
This is just a vane pump which uses hydraulic oil. Buy any good quality hydraulic oil with the right friction and detergent modifiers. All the big oil companies have these hydraulic oils under different names. Mostly the difference is when you use the vehicle in tropical heat or the arctic cold!
Lisa b you will want to subscribe. I’ve got a couple videos coming out that will have evidence of quality, and applicable uses. There are a lot of fluids out there but most of them are poor. Not just hydraulic fluid! Also a video to address the climates as well.
Power steering fluid is basically an anti-wear hydraulic oil. ATF functions like a hydraulic oil, but the additive package is different (ZDDP vs. borate esters in ATF).
Is regular prestone psf safe for asian make like a nissan? I just replace it from being red to clear prestone. I am debating on whether to order the genuine nissan psf and flushing back out the Prestone with the turkey baster method.
David Kim I’m not familiar with the Nissan stuff but it’s got to be better than the Prestone stuff. That stuff is junk. With OEM Equiptment is choose OEM Fluid the Prestone stuff hands down.
Just replaced my power steering unit and the cap says to add dex ATF, so that's what I'm using.
On BMW power steering reservoir is written „ ATF fluid only" but then M cars use CHF 11S power steering fluid,.
Nissan Urvan states that if no PSF is available to substitute with ATF Dextron VI. (some countries dont even have PSF)
Okay, do you know Toyotas check transmission fluid for power-sharing forward calls for ATF do you know that right so why is that I’m not questioning what you’re saying but I’m questioning why Toyota does that
My 2001 Ford Escape owners manual says to use Mercon ATF.
I've tried them both and my '98 Olds Cutlass is much quieter and more responsive with dex-III transmission fluid in it. So are you saying my steering system actually had less metal on metal friction with power steering fluid in it even though it was noisy with dead spots and ran hotter?
americanstrife I’m saying transmission fluid is for exactly what it states it’s for, “transmissions”. Poor quality power steering fluid like anything else poor quality can and will give you issues however if your steering is bleed correctly, has a good performing pump and a good quality fluid you should not have any issues. I recommend GM A/C Delco, Swepco, or our own AGR Performance Fluid. If you purchase 4 quarts of AGR fluid I double your warranty.
This man is trying to sell his product. I can't knock his hustle but his information is mostly wrong because most cars use ATF for power steering.
But - it really doesn't make a difference because you can't get AGR to answer their phone or emails. Ordered and finally received a pump from them a year ago. But haven't received the fluid that was paid for when the pump was ordered. I quite trying to contact them after a year.
OK what about the cars that recommend ATF fluid like a lot of Toyota
I have been 2 days going so many places most of people told me that there is no different between both of them ... i didn't believe them and this disasters in Baghdad -Iraq
Some videos I watched before this one state that psf has some oils that may cause the seals in the pump and rack to swell and degrade, that at doesn't have.
Perhaps that's why some manufacturers specifically call for dexron 3 atf.
Failed seal = failed part.
High mileage ATF will have the seal swell agents, though regular ATF has some in lower concentrations too.
Subaru WRX ATF bottle says it's for power steering as well.
Has anyone had steering pump groaning issues using lucas performance power steering fluid says compatible with gm. I installed power steering in my 1970 GMC 1500 I've always used dextron or dex/merc in my power steering in all of my vehicles never had an issue. I decided because I had a new pump box and hoses I'd buy actual steering fluid. It's been bled foam is gone still whines , probably going to flush it and replace with ATF tomorrow
Isn't the pump in a 4l60e transmission a metal on metal vane design?
I suspect the rack itself generates much higher forces and wear than the vane pump. A lot of manufacturers have technical service bulletins cancelling ATF and recommending power steering fluid, the additive package is different (borate esters vs ZDDP) and probably better for preventing wear.
Many automatic transmissions also have metal on metal vain style pumps.........
My lexus sc300 calls for atf iii for my power steering fluid.......huh?
It says to use ATF Dexron fluid, right on the power steering cap (2012 Subaru Legacy).
Gregory Robinson you can certainly do that! Many OEMs do recommend all sorts of transmission fluids for various reasons however these same manufactures also have recommendations for engine oils that high performance engine builders and engine dynoers will tell you their case studies show the OEM recommendations are NOT the best which is the case we have found by dyno testing 20-30 stock and performance power steering pumps daily. We only build and study power steering. Our expert studies show a non synthetic quality power steering fluid yields better dyno results and last longer!
And after your factory warranty expires if you have to replace your pump the OEMs will not warranty their pumps like AGR does. Our warranty is standard 1 year, but if you purchase my fluid, (not use ATF) I DOUBLE your warranty to 2 full years. That’s how strongly I am with my products and my advice against using ATF.
2002 Toyota Camry requires Dexron 3 for PS system.
Yeah idk about its bad on all pumps ive used it on all my leaky nissans hondas toyotas they all like it still run fine no noise from pumps
The 700r4/4l60e use the same metal to metal vane style pump... I'm not sure the analogy holds up.
Michael Higgins JR well kinda. That’s like saying one tire is round, and another is round and both should last the same nit considering its environment IE horsepower, weight of the vehicle, tire spin and such. The size of the pump in the trans is considerably larger, the trans pump also does it product over 1000-1600 PSI which is considerably harder on the power steering pump vs the transmission pump! The power steering pump is also spring loaded so the ring, rotor, plates and veins are already under pressure not considering its work load when it’s being spun compared to the transmission!! 😉
the owners manual in my truck says to use atf+4 transmission fluid. Yet, this mechanic says to use regular power steering fluid. I'm about to change my power steering pump in the morning. Which fluid should I use? Truck is a 2004 dodge Dakota 4.7 I wasn't sure if this info on the truck was needed. Thank you for any help.
David C. Yes sir it does but ATF is not the best choice for any power steering pump. I highly recommend GM ACDelco Power Steering Fluid if you need a good Fluid tomorrow. It’s a good quality fluid compatible with your pump and readily available.
With my brand pumps I offer a 1 year warranty, but if you purchase my fluid at the same time I double your warranty to 2 full years. I do NOT warranty any of my products with the use of any fluid with red dye, especially ATF. I hope that helps you sir.
Thank you. I'll do that.
You say that you will double the warranty of your AGR racks if you use the steering fluid you sell. What kind do you sell and where can I get some? Your customer service recommends a GM power steering fluid. Will you replace my steering pump when it fails because of not using the recommended fluid called for by the manufacturer? I have a Ford product calling for Mercon V.
Wiliam Hazzard sounds like you've spoken to me or one of my salesman. You can call back and order directly from us at 817-626-9006. Ask for me, Josh if you'd like. Of course I can't stand behind your power steering pump. There isn't any way to gauge its health to begin with however if you purchased the pump, rack and pinion and the fluid from me the warranty for both will be extended to 2 full years! My pumps start at 166.00 depending on your application. You can also email me at josh@agrperformance.com
Steering Pro Shop AGR Performance Steering
I have a 96 Mustang GT 4.6 litre 2V. I did not see an AGR pump listed on LMR.com that is suitable for my application. LMR is where I purchased the AGR rack. It seems that a Saginaw designed pump would be better as they are made to be used with GM fluids as recommended by your staff.
Wiliam Hazzard if you don't feel comfortable using GM A/C Delco I also offer the 2 year warranty on my product if you either purchase Swepco power Steering oil from me or my own AGR Performance fluid pictured in this video. I believe Ford recommends Automatic Transmission Fluid and don't manufacture or sell a "true power steering fluid" for your application. Using transmission fluid if any type is a bad practice in any power steering pump no mater what the manufacture states because automatic transmission fluid has friction additives and your power steering pump is a metal on metal vein pump. Metal on metal components don't do well with friction additives. That might be why most fords with any mileage are know for their noisy pumps. If you don't feel comfortable with the GM fluid please purchase your rack and pinion, pump and fluid from is and ask we either give you the Swepco fluid or our own AGR fluid. We only recommend the A/C Delco fluid because it has been proven to be a superior fluid that is readily available. If you purchase your pump, rack and pinion and fluid from us on the same invoice as your components you will receive the 2 year warranty
Wiliam Hazzard my CII style pump part number 809102 is 166.00 and will fit your application. I have them in stock and I'm sure LMR does as well. Im not sure if they have have my power steering fluid in stock as it's a brand new product from us. LMR is very helpful and you can always call to talk to me directly. Just as for Josh or if you forget my name just ask for the owner
Wiliam Hazzard i
Thanks
99 f150, ford uses Mercon ATM for PS fluid.
thank you for clearing that up for me i am girl my mechanic took me use transit mission fluid an I didn't like that idea
Wolfs Head Super universal Transmission Fluid in your power steering reservoir. I use it in my 2012 Volvo XC60 power steering pump. No problems ever. Read the enter article.
Wolf's Head Universal Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid is a full synthetic automatic transmission fluid and is now reformulated with even more universal applications in modern traditional Automatic Transmissions. It is by far the most dynamic member of Wolf's Head family of high performance automatic transmission fluids. It is the latest iteration of the fluid that changed the ATF market - the one premium ATF that became known for its rugged dependability, and as the inventory optimizer. With the exception of CVT fluids and Duel Clutch Fluids (DCT), the new Wolf's Head Super Universal Synthetic ATF will come with broader and more universal coverage for the more traditional planetary-gear transmissions. By seperating out the CVT application, Wolf's Head is able to endorse performance applications for many more European, Korean, Japanese, and U. S. heavy-duty transmission applications than ever before - not just the newer and more demanding transmissions, we are now able to recommend Wolf's Head Oil Company's Universal Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid for all conventional automatic transmissions - old and new. It is a special blend of synthetic base oils coupled with a multi-functional additive system and advanced friction modifiers to provide unsurpassed protection and reliable performance for all types of automatic transmissions, power steering units and hydraulic systems manufactured by virtually all of the automotive and transmission manufacturers from around the world - the one fluid that replaces the confusion about which fluid to use in a multitude of automatic transmissions.
I have a 1969 Chevy C20 with a 350. I was told not to use regulsr power steering fluid or automatic transmission fluid. I was told to use Type A fluid. Why??
I had a hard time finding it too. I found it at a Shell gas station.
707SonomaComa, I’m sorry you have gotten poor information. I highly recommend going to your local GM dealer and purchasing GM A/C Delco Power Steering Fluid. It’s the best, most readily available power steering fluid on the market. The difference in my fluid in largely is I have doubled the antifoaming agent. If you ever purchase any of my components go ahead and buy my fluid too. By doing so I DOUBLE your warranty from 1 year to 2 full years.
Buy the AC Delco. You won’t be disappointed!
Steering Pro Shop AGR Performance Steering, Believe it or not is is still all original, air pump and all. I was told that is the original stuff to use from 1969. How can I find out if that is true?
707SonomaComa, the OEMs use a lot of different stuff through the years. My advise is to NOT use ANY kind of Transmission Fluid! Only use a real power steering fluid! Your pump is a Saginaw P Pump. We build them every single day and we dyno test every single one using our Power Steering Fluid. Before we had our own we used GM A/C Delco. You pump design is still in use today and GM recommends their A/C Delco Fluid.
I’d love to see some pics of the truck! My dad had a light green 69 C20 when I was young! Email me pics if you’d like. Josh@agrperformance.com
Doesn’t matter which one you choose if you have a good leak. Just keep filling it up with whatever you have available haha
u fucking pollute everything with that mindset!
WTF, dude, in my owner's manual it is written, in the power steering section: "Use NISSAN Automatic Transmission
Fluid (ATF), DEXRONIII/MERCON or equivalent ATF."
Ford does use Marcon LV on their power rack and pinion steering systems. I tried using the synthetic power steering fluid and the steering response was not the same and over a very short time I damaged my power steering pump. so very poor advice from this guy its always best to read and follow your owner manuals recommended fluids.
Jeep says to add ATF+4
So power steering fluid is the same transmission fluid for using? Thz
Sok Sony please use transmission fluid in transmissions, and power steering fluid in power steering. Do not mix them up
No bruh. ATF is the safest by far. Bought a van (4Y gears) . Power steering sounded like crap when turning. Upon checking I found the oil is lower than half as the previous owner was sloppy. I just bought a bottle of ATF fluid and topped up. Turns out there was absolutely nothing wrong 6 years later, and still turning smooth. So ATF is best for power steering from my experience.
Click on the link and read it before you buy
Not All pumps a vane design federal pumps are roller
Really demonstrates the level of incompetency of staff hired by Steering pro. Car manufacturer actually specify using ATF grade i their vehicles. Use what is specified by car manufacturer and you be right. " Power steering fluid" are priced for the ignorant. - Mech B.eng
2013 TOYOTA TACOMA RECOMMENDS ATF FOR POWER STEERING SO.....
There is also a lot of metal-to-metal-contact in an automatic transmission, so ATF should not be used in these either...
But wait I been putting ATF+4 Tranmission on my power steering cause in my owners manual says I can use as a substitute for power steering Fluid +4.
DANTE FLORIAN, if you are running a stock pump please use the manufacturers recommendations but if you are using a High Performance Pump like one of my AGR products please use one of our 3 approved fluids. A high performance pump demands a better environment than what any ATF can provide.
Steering Pro Shop AGR Performance Steering and were can I buy your power steering fluid.
DANTE FLORIAN, our website is being completely rebuilt, you can contact us directly at 817-626-9006. Thank you.
Thanks . This was really useful!
Bro my Lexus literally says on the cap to use Dexron ATF 😭
Yes and I specifically said if you are using an OEM pump to use what’s recommended, but if you are using a high performance high pressure high volume pump like my AGR to not use ATF.
@@Steeringproshop in this video you didn't say that. Maybe in the later parts.
@@Steeringproshop no you did not . thats a lie lmfao you said all makes brands , and models ..... the total opposite. you are reading a script how would you even remember what you said cuz you are obviously to lazy to go back and listen to what you said .
Never say never. Motorcraft Mercon Type F ATF & Powersteering Fluid. My 95 SHO 5spd calls for it for steering
Then why does it say to use Mercon V ATF on my Ford. And why does ford sell gallon of AT/PS fluid. O guess you better call them and say they're wrong huh
Ed Sellers there is certainly a big difference between a stock pump and a much tighter pump that’s designed to produce more pressure and more volume and the at these higher pressures and volumes the fluid is put through a lot more punishment. Environment becomes considerably more critical. That being said, I do believe I said that if you are running a factory pump to follow the manufacturers recommendation.
If you are running my high performance pump I highly recommend using my formula, Swepco or GM A/CDelco. There’s a reason why I only warranty with the use of these 3 fluids. It’s because they need better fluid than ATF to survive. And yeah Ford did get it wrong.
@@Steeringproshop I doubt they did. I have a Ford F250 6.0 that calls for Mercon V ATF. I needed up and put psf and ruined my pump. Please go on how a manufacturer is wrong about that they recommend in their products
Infiniti's would also disagree with u.
Your claim is false. My vehicle calls for atf +4 in power steering and in the 62te transmission.
I had a Ford Taurus (99' w/DOHC) which called for ATF, I decided to flush the system myself with some $10 power steering fluid and my pump starting screaming! Had to pay abt $600 to get it changed....bottom line, if you use what it calls for and you have a problem...then you have a legal leg to stand on, anything else different then it's on you and you alone my friend!
because people now are not buying Powersteering fluid anymore
motul multi atf said u can use with ps
Damn I almost dumpped atf in my car.
My car use ATF dextron 3
Toyota use ATF
Sounds like an advertisement from California
Its the same dude.
I used to be tech for years at Chevy and GM would disagree with you. I specialize in GM and Ford. In all honest, the biggest contender to ATF leaks is Dodge/RAM which is basically fiat now. Think I'm kidding, look who made the EcoDiesel in the RAM 1500. It was Fiat. All cars have pros and cons and unfortunately Fiat is not on my list just like Hyundai/Kia for vehicle I recommend for people to buy. New cars are completely garbage and that goes for GM as well.
GM can be either ATF or Power Steering Fluid. If it came with ATF from the factory. We put ATF in it. If it came with Power Steering Fluid, we put ATF in it.
Heck, before I was a tech at Chevy, at Valvoline was the same thing.
Same with a lot of years of RAM 1500-3500 as well using ATF or Valvoline ATF MaxLife.
There are NO rotating equipment ever made were there is METAL on METAL designed. Hydraulic Pumps are NOT a Metal on Metal design,.. this guy is wrong,.. why have any fluid if designed for metal on metal,.. that makes NO sense!!!!
Yeah I’ll default to engineers with millions of hours of R&D like TOYOTA who specifically recommend ATF. I think they know a little more than you do 😂😂😂
Yeah but in my mustang Ford says to use type f.
KWF i don’t argue that but your Ford pump is known for the supercharger whine too! If you are running my pump, like all other aftermarket high performance pump manufacturers, ATF voids the warranty because ATF is not good for the pump internals!
@@Steeringproshop it does sound like that. I should install a boost gauge.
KWF that’s the best quote of the year so far! Bwaaaahahahaha
Do not buy from this company. Checkout all the reviews across various locations on the web and see all the undelivered items and stolen money taken from customers.
This man lacks knowledge of transmissions. Clutch packs in auto trans have metal and friction materiels bundled together. Friction modifiers allow in this part for the different materials to stay in proper contact with each other. clutches are just a portion of transmissions. Planetary gears are metal on metal and drilled with oil passages lubed by atf. His whole argument is based on “metal on metal” and if this were the case every auto trans ever made would fail immediately. If the owners manual says you can use atf use it. Trust what the people that designed your vehicle say, not someone such as this “expert” trying to sell you something.
Yeah toyota would disagree 🙄
what a bullshit toyota and dodge used same fluid for power steering and transition
