  • This video answers the question, (Is Synthetic Power Steering Fluid the Best?). I explain the reasons why the fluid temperature ratings are not the power steering pump temperature ratings. I also explain why synthetic power steering fluid is often too slick to perform correctly and hurts the volume rating

    Nobody is talking about the cold properties of synthetic fluid. Specifically an ASTM D97 Cold Flow test. Its -30 out right now where I live and synthetic flows at this temperature.

    4:17 - Chrsler/Dodge/Jeep/Fiat uses ATF+4 Fluid which is Synthetic. So that's kind of a strange comment to make, unless of course he means for a specific aftermarket type of power steering pump.

      And that should be fine for an OEM pump which is lower pressure and lower volume. Those pumps run on that fluid forever. My buddy’s ‘14 Ram OEM pump has ATF, never changed/flushed and steering is same today as was when he bought it. However, my ‘98 Ram has a high flow pump so I can’t run ATF. I would risk either reduced performance or destroying it.

    Pays to do some research. I was contemplating refilling my power steering with synthetic ATF. Thought it had to be better. Thanks for your clear explanation.

    What metal melts at 180°F? If you're going to throw that out there, you need a WAY better explanation.

      Probably why there isn't a part 3? Unless I missed it.

    Great stuff! I feel like performance offroad steering has been voodoo for so long, great to see tech coming out covering the basics.

    Volume is not what makes the steering operate, it is pressure, because the "power" steering system is hydraulic.
    Mentioning volume would be appropriate when talking about a cars water pump, where the pump is creating super super low pressures moving the "volume" of coolant through the cooling system.
    Metal doesnt melt at 180 degrees. Can you imagine a set of headers melting off your engine😂

    Most of the time a PS pump is working in a bypass mode. Personally i have used PTFE additive, as well as OEM ATF in pumps for years with.. admitably.. pre 2012 cares,.. I have had zero problems.

      GKT I think its great that you care enough about your steering system to try to create a good fluid mixture but using PTFE, however I have not seen the benefits. In-fact Machinery Lubricant Magazine did a write up on this exact topic. I'm quoting them when I say, "(PTFE), was invented by Roy Plunkett of Kinetic Chemicals (DuPont) more than a half century ago. To this day, DuPont claims that "PTFE is not useful as an ingredient in oils"
      The low volume, low pressure pumps manufactured by OEM's can get away with using lesser quality fluids like Automatic Transmission Fluid because they are in fact low pressure, low volume. Just like a high performance engine, a high performance Power Steering Pump requires a better fluid, which is why I state if you are running an OEM pump by all means use a OEM specified fluid, but if you want your HIGH PERFORMANCE PUMP to perform to the standards of its manufacturer use the fluids that the manufacturer recommends, tests and warranties the products with...

    Not sure you’re up to date about why synthetic oil can handle the heat better. They are not simple hydrocarbons like petroleum oil. In addition many cars come with power steering fluid coolers. Why would they design that if heat was not such an issue?

  • @JayDee-bz2ge
    @JayDee-bz2ge Před 5 lety +2

    LOL!! You seem to have (slick) confused with boundary layer. Sure, heavy LUCAS oil will create a "film" reducing "contact". But (ANTI FRICTION) is not the same & will only help the pump.
    Another benefit of some SYNTHETICS is there ((ANTI FOAMING)) properties... Hard use like rock crawling / off road, can cause "cavitation" here & there. The ability to keep air bubbles under control is a HUGE factor....

      Jay Dee this Fluid was developed after running 30-50 gallons of over a dozen fluids in our dyno. These tests and their results were the base knowledge before taking those fluids
      And the case study to the lab for development. I’m not an expert in fluid development however I learned a great deal in the process of perusing my own fluid! I do understand dyno results and how they effect foaming, aeration and volume Performsnce very well!
      This fluid is dominate! It literally has twice as much antifosming agent than any other fluid available! It WORKS! If you are still interested in facts i can certainly provide you with data sheets and can explain how that data applies to power steering pump performance or you can wait for further videos and critique them as well. Or you can buy my fluid with one of my pumps, enjoy the same confidence I have in that pumps performance along with its 2 year warranty because no other brand warranties their product past 90 days. There might be something to that!

    Why do heavy truck’s power steering reservoirs usually have stickers that recommend ATF? Is PS fluid better, or is ATF easier for truck maintenance shops?

      ATF has a different additive package that can also protect seals better in certain environments.

    where do you put the temperature probe at to read P/S fluid temps? in the reservoir?😕

    • @Steeringproshop
      @Steeringproshop  Před 5 lety +1

      PANTYEATR1 yes the most accessible place is in the reservoir. This is another reason why I do not recommend having a remote reservoir very far from the pump because the pump is the heat source.

      @@Steeringproshop great info Mr. Josh...by the way, I'm Jefferson. i spoke to you about the V8 pump issue. so, what would be the procedure for testing the heat off the pump and fluid? put a temp probe in the reserve, drive around in in all conditions?

    • @Steeringproshop
      @Steeringproshop  Před 5 lety

      PANTYEATR1 a temp probe that you might use in an AC vent or a meat style probe works. Some of our race applications we weld a bung in the reservoir for a gauge sensor

    Joshua in 2022 I had you build me a rack for my 04 Cobra and after two racks and buying this fluid that you never sent me I’m having major issues with this rack. At 40-45 mph it’s dangerous to drive! I find it’s interesting that you have finally closed your doors as you deserve to spend time in prison for all the wrong things you’ve done to so many people! Do you read your own google reviews?
    I’m having Jr at Turn One fix your lack of mechanical skills!

    Metal inside power steering pump melts at 180c , hmm that must be some new kind of metal I’ve never heard about! Hahaha if I were to follow your philosophy I’ll put some grease in PS system to increase volume! Hahaha people like him are thinking engineering is easy and simple... they’re so wrong!
