    Your video made me appreciate a good mechanic who knows what they are doing. We complain about what they charge but they often deserve what they get paid. It is difficult to find a good one you trust. Good job. I have a 96 Ford F150 that had intermittent shut off/restart issues I bought last summer but now cranks but won't start. My mechanic has not nailed down the problem and doesn't want to just start replacing parts. Another CZcams video turned out to be the inertia switch. When weather improves here in Greenbay, guess I will get out there and tinker with it myself. Or get it towed somewhere. Thanks for your tips.

    Thank you very much Jim... Your information helped a lot. No i don't have any pressure at all... but gas did come out from the valve when i press it. I have cycled the key several times.

    That was great and I may have a fuel pump problem with my Ford Explorer (1999) which ran great until I parked it the last time, and when I tried to start it again, it would not start, but would crank up normally. I can't remember if I had replaced the filter on this vehicle since I owned it in 1970. I have a tool to put replace the filter on one Explorer and also on a 1987 S-10 Blazer I still have. I thank you so much for the information, and hope it works for me.

    Thanks for the step by step diagnostics. I did them all and found the crankshaft position sensor was the issue. $19.99 and a little elbow grease and my 98 Ranger Starts! I appreciate ya!

    thanks for sharing a friend just called me about her truck not starting i looked it up and now i know where everything on her vehicle is and did the process i figured it was the fuel pump when there was no humming but its nice to know the extra steps. the pulsing and all the connections and special tools needed.. thanks again.

    Interesting and logical fix. I have engine turn over , no spark , no gas , gas gage not responding , haven't checked pressure yet but cannot hear gas pump so what next ? fuel pump relay ? I am checking fuses for a short but no luck yet . I do have a short because there's a spark arc at batt . cable and an engagement noise, that I suspect is where my short is coming from. It is a 97 Blazer 4.3 and any ideas would be a great help .thank you Jim.

    There are different fixes for Crank No Start. When you work on the engine for a while you do something to the settings of the vehicle and you might need to do a reset this will clear old codes too. Ok disconnect negative cable and get another wire maybe one side of a jumper cable and put one end on the Negative CABLE make sure it is away from the battery terminal may be put a rag over it to make sure they don't touch then touch the other connecting end to the positive side terminal for one minute. another CRANK NO START fix is to check Crank Positioning Sensor THEY ARE USUALLY OUT OF SIGHT FROM THE TOP OF THE ENGINE. They can't be forgotten after pulling the timing chain cover off.
    on a 99 ford Expedition 5.4 its underneath passenger's side. With it unplugged it will still have fuel pressure but spark.

    It’s either the fuel pump fuse, or the fuel pump itself if you can hear a car crank, if the starter wasn’t receiving power you would hear a click when cranking rather than actual cranking noise, also, if you hear the beeping noise when the key is in the ignition, the fuel pump is receiving power from the fuse. But the real question is, is the fuel pump working properly and creating enough pressure to pump fuel into the fuel tank

      the fuel pump pressure seems to be there but weak, no spark, no way to crank it by myself and listen to the injectors, my hunch it is a bad crank sensor, going to pull the coil and test it but the service manual is very sKetchy on what the resistance values should be or how to test it

    I have a 2005 explorer. I've been trying to figure out what's wrong for a whole week an a half. Already changed the fuel pump, with it's filter. Also, checked the crank. I bought a new, because I thought the old one was not getting any connection, yet with the new one it still won't spark. When I try to start her, she won't start. In the monitor to the left (inside and next to the miles counter) it pops-up "test"... Could it be the key or a relay?

    Ford has a running problem with this that involves a new harness running to the fuel pump and a larger fuse...the harness is on national back order so I'm thinking it's a huge problem....Ford dealer repaired mine with a bypass wire and larger fuse and it works great.

    I know this is an old video but if you have a Ford probe GT and it won’t start back in the day the common problem was the distributor they go bad so just go replace the distributor and it will start right up no problem I went through four different distributors back when I had a probe

    Great video I have the same problem with the same car. I don't have power in the connector at 9:20 in your video, but I do have power going to the inertia fuel cutoff switch, and to the fuel pump driver module.
    What do you suggest?

    My 2003 F-150 5.4 Triton cranks without starting sometimes, then other times it start right up. Could that be the fuel pump going bad slowly, or do fuel pumps just die fast? Thanks!

    HI Jim. I have pulled out halfway the fuel rail with the injectors still attached and started the car. I discovered that the injectors won't fire. then I tried pulsing each injectors separately and they do fire fuel. So what does this mean? Do I now go for the ECU? It appears that the injectors are not receiving voltage pulse for them to fire from the ECU. And if so, what do I check for in the ECU? How do I repair it? thanks

    For mine - 2004 Triton V8 - it doesn't happen in the morning or after it's sat for 2 hours or more. Only if I drive it, stop for a few minutes like the gas station or grocery store then try to start again after only sitting for 10 - 30 minutes.

    I've just been through Hurricane Harvey. My lincoln 1998 towncar was flooded but no water in the engine. Now, it does not even turn. what can I do. I tilt it with my 2tons jack and about 3 gallon of watrr came out. How can I get my car to start again? beside taking it to a mechanic . thanks in advance

    96 Cadillac DeVille has fuel pump pressure has spark cranks over won't start. Sprayed starter fluid into the carburetor area. It starts up runs for 10 seconds then shuts off. Check all the fuses none of them were bad. Check the PCM it's fine. Bought a set of Noid lights to check the fuel injector power. No flash. Now I know the fuel pump is brand new. The old one wasn't even bad. The oil pressure switch ack's a fuel pump relay backup I'm wondering if that's the problem. I got up under there to look I didn't see no oil dripping from it but that still doesn't mean that it can't be bad. I brought a new fuel pump relay fuse and it's just fine. But soon as I spray the starter fluid into it it fires right up. The fuel pump pressure regulator is not leaking so I don't think that's my problem either. I'm stumped on this any suggestions

    i have a 2001 f150 with a code p171 i checked it and noticed it was a pcv hose. i replaced but now it does starts on but don't run. i checked for any unconnected hose and everything looks ok. i even cleaned the full throttle body, mass sensor, new air filter and still don't run..
    what do you think it might be? it was perfectly fine and running before i noted the pvc hose had a hole wich i assume the reason for p0171 code. it starts on.. stays on but if i put it on reverse or drive it just don't have power.

    I have a 89 mazda b2200 that doesn't have spark coming from the ignition coil but the resistance test shows it to be good, engine turns over but wont start. It doesn't have a cps. I thought it may be the ignition switch but it is turning the engine over. Any advice? Im at a deadend,lol. Thanx

    My husband was driving in traffic and the truck cut off. He tried to crank it up it didn't do any. When he got a boost off it crsnk but cut right back off. My friend said the fuel wasn't getting to the motor. Do that mean the fuel pump went out? We have a 2008 GMC Acadia.

    My mazda cx 9 has a 3.7 Ford engine. For some time now, the engine of the night stop has been turning on and off. It starts the second or third time. Then it starts normally. I cleaned the fuel mesh filter. Is it a faulty fuel pump? Forscan shows error p0171 - poor mixture of cylinders group one. What is going on? please help

    My husband watched this video because we had the problem with our 97 Ford after minor work he did (shocks replaced) and it wouldn't start. He discovered (thanks to the serendipitous visit of a neighbour) that the fuel pump shut-off switch had tripped because he was bouncing the car to check the shocks and lifting and lowering it and dropping it. He pressed the red reset button on top of the shutoff switch and then when he turned the key he could hear the fuel pump run again. It started!

    Jim, they put it on a diagnostics tester and the only thing it showed was a crank position sensor. Does that sound about right? Can you send me a video on how to change one on a 2002 accent.

      +carl hicks Most likely the sensor is no good if it show the code.I don't have a video for replacing the sensor but the sensor should be on the front left of the engine by the exhaust.(left is the driver side) keep me posted

    Jim, a very important question... Do these mustangs have a fuel pump relay? I have checked in the owner's manual but found only a fuse for the fuel. The fuse was good but i want to check if the relay is bad (if it has one)...

      No on this car there is no relay I will attach what my repair program said. Good luck let me know how you do. Remember be careful with the gas and the fumes from the gas. Fuel Pump Relay is not serviceable.
      The Constant Control Relay Module (CCRM) contains the fuel pump relay, which supplies power to the FPDM. If any of the internal components of the CCRM fail, the entire unit must be replaced

    So what happens if I have spark and I have fuel pressure?? I have an 03 f150 that just won't start at all! Just cranks and cranks. And every once in a while (on a very rare occasion) it will start. But once you turn it off. It is back to square 1! Please help. Very very frustrating

    how much pressure should there be on the schrader valve. on mine gas did come out but didn't notice pressure... thanks!

      There should be any where from 35-55 lbs of pressure .Remember that you will need to cycle the key a few times to build pressure.When you press in the valve the fuel should spray up at least several inch high.Be carfeul with the fuel (no sparks)Some of the big auto stores rent equipment check if you can rent a fuel pressure tool.. Good luck

    I have a big issue, I just bought a used 06 chrysler 300 last week and it shut down on me twice on the highway as I was driving I tried to turn it on and no luck.. my friend put in $3 worth of gas and after turning the switch several times it started but the weird thing is on the dash before my car shut down it said it had 3/4 of gas so I need help?? What can it be?? I'm a woman and have no idea when it comes to cars😢

    I replaced the engine in my 2003 Ford explorer 4.0 with a remanufactured directly from Ford. My question is does changing engine throw the vehicles computer off. It did start the day the new engine was installed but can't get to start again. Thank you for any ideas and help.

      Cranks! But will not start. Starts after repeadely pumpin accelerator. Starts poppin a missin. After 30 seconds it begins 2 start. Haveim 2 pump it 4 a bit till it finally fires up! Once it gets 2 running! No more problens 4 the day !

    Hi Jim I have a 99 crown Vic that I had to replace the gas tank a fuel pump my car was sugered...the mechanic who I brought it to put a used gas tank (not happy with that ) and a new file pump..I also replace two injectors and fuel filter. Blew out the lines as well..the 2 issues I have is the car runs fine but if I drive it after say 5-10 minutes a she'll stall out and it's hard to start..the second issue I have is I can actually hear the fuel pump whining when cars running when I open my trunk and stick my head in..I've checked out 2-3 other crown Vic Grand marquis and I don't hear the pumps whining at all..I was told that done aftermarket pumps will whine..what do you think?

    Oh man you did that pump the hard way. only 6 bolts hold the bed on. Take the bolts out unplug the tail lights and take the bed off. don't even have to drain the tank.

      Where was the short? My car radio went out. It turns in but no sound was coming from speakers. Now my car won't start. It just cranks .....

      Martha I did fix it i had a short on mine car ..the stereo wires were grounded..
      And it could be alout of things like fuel pressure fuel filter ,fuel really, fuel fuse..
      No spark ,could be your coil pack ..could be your fuel injectors!! Fuel pressure regulator.. your timing your little computer that controls your injectors if your not getting fuel in to the injectors

    tks Jim. the car turns over like normal just won't crank unless you use cables. its like its giving it extra voltage. I do not hear the fuel pump unless I do this. after cranks runs normal no cut out or jerk like pump is bad. tks jerry

    I have a 2000 4.7 4 wheel drive that just died while I was driving. on my way home from work for a week it would put it self in to limp mode I would reset the truck and it would run just fine Intel I was on my home the next day. I replaced the starter the computer PCM the crank and cam sensors the water pump. fuel pump does come on gauges work but no abs light no check enige light and no secertiy light what could it be???

      swap your fuel pump relay with the blower motor relay and try starting. If that doesnt work than swap blower motor relay with PCM relay. Seems silly but worked for me. If it works than buy a few back up relays and keep em in your glove box.

    jim,i have a 2000 ford expedition 5.4 it has a crank no start issue but it only does it sometimes.not all the time.most of the time its been cold weather situation.so im thinking crankshaft sensor,it was very dirty washed it power washer the next morning 25 degrees it starts right up,next day 27 degrees starts up,finally 50 degrees it wont...help

    Hey Jim, I have a 2002 Ford Mustang 3.8L V6. about a year ago, I had a crank no start situation. I changed out the Spark Plugs, put ina new battery, fixed the problem. a couple months ago, I had to have surgery, and was out of work for 2 months, I went to start the car, fired up, then the whole car shook, really bad idle, and when I tried to give it gas, seemed to make it choke even more. I assumed that it may have water in the tank, due to the weather change and from sitting, so I put some of Sea Foam or whatever into the tank, I also pulled the Idle Control Valve, cleaned it out, and put on a new gasket. Disconnected the battery, and it still crank no start. I'm getting fuel at the valve, the red pump reset button is pushed down already, cannot press it in the trunk, Theift light isn't an issue, any ideas?

      +jimthecarguy The car won't start at all, it just cranks. I did get it to start initially, after I Jumped the battery, I let it idle for about 2 and a half hours, to make sure the Alternator had time to recharge the battery, when I went out to move it into the garage, it started choking and did even more when I pressed the gas. I am kind of thinking that perhaps, since it was sitting, when I started it, it sucks stuff into the filter plugging it, I had a mechanic come out today, he believes it to be the fuel filter. I am having him come over tomarrow and install a new one, hopefully that's all it is. I try to do everything I can myself, but as I have stitches from an Incisional Hernia, I cannot lift anything. He charged me 48.00 to come out, and he stated its gonna be about a half hour to hour job tomarrow, which I think is right, Fuel Filter is easy to get to. You can clearly hear the fuel pump kick on, and I know that doesn't mean its not working right, but at least the Fuel Filter is a start, its just over 100k miles.       +jimthecarguy Ok update. Mechanic came, put in a new Fuel Pump, Fuel filter. Car still wouldn't start, disconnect battery, hooked back up, seen that Fuel pump fuse was blown. Put new one in, still wont start just cranks. Mechanic is coming back tomarrow to do electrical diagnosis.

    i have a 1999 ford windstar. i put a new MAF in it. now the thift light flashes all the time. i turn the key. and it really flashes. for a min. then it stops flashing for a few secends. then it does that about 3 times. then it flashes i think it was 8 times in a row? and there's no spark? if you can please, help me with this? thank you for your time.

    ok im baffled ...........bought a 1999 ford f150 been sitting for about a year had parking brake stuck and they thought rear end was out...got it home fixed the problem drove it about 6 miles noticed front brakes hanging up so it sat about a week until got the issue fixed went out to start it to move it to mow.. It started and died Started then died It cranks no spark fuel pressure is running about 38psi checked all fuses and relays tightened all grounds to firewall what can be the problem ............replaced cps and still cranks but no spark thanks for the help

    own a 2000 BMW 740li. I parked it for three months. Went to drive it. Battery was dead. Replaced battery and the car will crank over but not start. Replaced crank shaft sensor, still no start. I have no fire nor fuel. Suggestions?

    Sir, i have related problem my r33 RB25det, when i started the engine & warming up suddenly shut down my engine. when i started up again my engine having Crank normally but wont start... there complete ignition of coil pack and new spark plug, and also checked already the fuel pump and fuel filter are working good condition, so will you give m,e advic

      michael geruldo Pull crank shaft sensor [sensor a clip behind pullys where belt is above water pump to the upper left. Use a mirror find it] clean it with electronic spray only both ends two squirts. Check ECM fuse too if its blown it cause what ur saying. Always check fuses relays sensors first work back. Use test light it save hundreds avoid replace parts dont need to be replaced

    I have the same problem and I replace the fuel pump cause I dirent have any pressure of fuel to the injectors....
    Now I have fuel to the injectors but still no start I check all the fuses and rellays..
    And the switch on the trunk and nothing

    We are having an issue like this with a 2003 ford mustang. It's stuck at a store until we can get to a shop. Any advice to get it going to get it to a shop or do we have to tow it. How much does something like this cost?

      +Jackie G If the fuel pump is the problem sometimes you can get it to start by hitting the fuel tank when you are cranking the car.This may cause the fuel pump to start to work enough to get it to a shop.Git it a try .Keep me posted.Jim

    Question! I have a 92 Nissan pickup with the 4cyl and itll crank but wont start. Ive changed the plugs, ignition coil, distributor cap and rotor button, and the fuel filter. Any suggestions?

      check your battery lines both positive and ground, to make sure the lines aren't corroded. was there a lot of corrosion around the + and - battery connectors??

      No there wan't any corrosion. We found out now that my timing is off and we're struggling to get the timing set with the distributor and the oil pump

      ahh ok cus I literally had the exact same problem and it was my battery lines. Both of them were more green corrosion than copper. looked like the statue of liberty I'm not kidding lol. once I replaced those and one relay fuse everything was perfect.

Good luck tho I've worked on my 2002 GMC Sonoma pick up and it has a stupid vortec which just creates a bunch of problems for my alternator, battery, fuel lines, I mean it has to be maintained literally weekly but I try to maintain it every couple weeks.

      on the distributor is a module that is gray in color that will go out and on occasion will intermittently cause that issue. Most of the time it will just not start but if you are lucky it will be like I described. Also you have a fuel cut off that malfunctions. My 1985 Ranger I got for $500 because the switch broke and left the old man stranded. I eliminated it and spliced the wires together.

      Lose wire to relay or fuse arched wire aka grounded wire cause this. Could be any number of things like Loose battery cables to starter to alternator or Eroded battery cables need replaced. ECM fuse may be faulting work not work off and on

    Hey was wondering if anyone could help I got this truck almost a year ago it ran twice now anti theft is on ? looking at it and pretty sure an engine swap was done and things are spliced and fuel pump sensor is by passed then the engine block ground is snapped what and anti theft is on its got crank but no spark is it anti theft if so how do I rest it ?

      Does your key have a computer chip? Crankshaft could have been damaged during engine swap.
