  • #208 - We've got the fresh Behringer Flow 8 Bluetooth controlled digital audio mixer in for a 2021 firmware update roundup this week. This one is an eight channel mixer and interface that is controlled almost entirely by it's accompanying FLOW APP. There have been some critical firmware updates already since it was released only a few months ago. A new approach to desktop mixers for sure, and powered by micro-USB, a great option for mobile users on the go. Podcasts, vlogs or performers on the go, this one is packed full of features to get the job done.

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  Před 3 lety +1

      Great question. I just tested it and the way it seems to work is it is a TRS jack, and you want a button that is 'normally open'. You can wire it to short pin one to pin 2, which will mute the effects. Or you can wire a button to short pins 1 & 3 which gives you the tap tempo. Obviously you could wire a double switch or pedal to do both. You'd want non-latching switches, as the mute latches itself after a short hold just like the button on the mixer does. Hope that helps Simon! This should work if you're not into building one - amzn.to/2ZHGRbt

    Great video. I work a solo act, keys, vocals. Every company always makes the mistake of not putting a high pass filter or a way to drop the low end on the effect. Especially hall settings. you have to have the option to drop the low end on the reverb or you will sound like you are in a gymnasium. If you are a vocalist with a voice in the lower range, you have to have that option.

    Great and helpful videos about the Flow8!
    I love this little mixer but I'm really missing the possibility to pan a track in a live situation without using a phone. It is much better to have a knob for panning. For example, the Select/Adjust knob has no function in Main mode - so why not using this one for panning (and even muting when pressed) the track which was touched last?
    This would help a lot on stage to make a fast change.
    Another thing is to give the user some more possibilities for editing the effects in the app like pre-dalay for example. Especially the channel compressors need to have some editing possibilities.
    But don't get me wrong - even if some things could be optimized this little beast is already a really great machine!

    Great video. The one feature that I think will just nail it for me would be if either of the monitor outputs mixes can be routed back to the computer via USB. That way for a setup where I might have a small live application that I also want to stream. I can have a live mix and a different stream mix going at the same time. It therefore works as a device level implementation of loopback. Something that is now on almost every new audio interface/ streaming device. I think once that is done the Flow 8 will be unstoppable. As I've thought about it I guess another way to implement that would be to route the main mix to the PC via USB and just use the monitor outputs as the live on location feed? Thanks for the hard work.

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  Před 2 lety +2

      You've got it right, you've just got to use the output that fits the job at hand & forget that one is called main & the others are labeled monitor. If you can feed the stream with the main out and use the monitor outs for a speaker in the room, that's a perfectly reasonable setup. Alternatively, I've described in a few other responses how in recording mode, you can patch a short 1/4" cable from the monitor out to the input of an unused channel & it will show up on that channels USB direct out to the computer as normal. I don't believe this is something they can change in firmware, but it would nice to be wrong.

      If your primary use is going to be for a phone in show using both the USB and Bluetooth, and you really do need to send a mix minus back, from what I understand the RODE would probably be a better choice. To be clear, I have not used one personally, but from the folks I've talked to who are doing what you are, it has been designed very much for that exact purpose. Obviously the cost is a good bit more, but it sounds like you may need the functionality. All the best, let us know what you decide and how it comes together.

    This mixer needs some reverb tweeks in a firmware update as the only reverbs that sound good to my ears are church and cathedral really. Hey Piya, the workaround to get a monitor send back to the USB is unusual, but it does work. You'll need to use the unit in 'Recording' mode to get the individual channels to appear in your computer via USB. Then you can patch from the monitor output with a 1/4" cable, back into one of the 1/4" inputs on a channel, and now that channel with pass the monitor send output over its related USB channel to the computer. Make sure you don't turn the channel you use up in the monitor mix you use, as that would be a direct feedback path, but otherwise you'll be good to go.

      Hello Pawel, thanks for the message. You can do zero latency monitoring with this no problem, just turn off channel monitoring in your DAW and turn the local input up on the mixer when recording. For automating tracks though, that is not possible with this mixer. For that you need a controller, not an interface. For doing that, any of the X-touch controllers will work. If you are only doing a couple of tracks at a time and the automation is important to you, maybe check out the PreSonus iOStation 24c - it is a controller with a small interface built in too. Here is a video we did about it a while back - czcams.com/video/tawF2suXJMc/video.html

      Hey Pawel, I'm not sure it's quite Bentley to Opel, but I like your comparison. I'm a big fan of MOTU products also & do believe the difference will be noticeable depending on what you are doing. If top quality is your concern though, the FLOW 8 probably isn't the right tool for you either. You may want to look at a dedicated X-touch controller just for automation & then upgrade your MOTU accordingly or move into something from Universal Audio, RME or Focusrite PRO for similar quality or better.

    Hey I was wondering if anyone can help me out. Im very new to audio so sorry in advance for when I say something wrong. I’m creating a new setup with a 2 PC video recording situation for Gaming/Tutorials, and just generally gaming while watching a movie on the other monitor so im interested in this mixer but Im not sure if it can fulfill my needs. I could go the easy route and buy a TC Helicon Go Xlr Mini but I feel I might be limiting myself in the future by going with something like that. I will if your absolutely adamant that that’s the best option for me tho, but I thought id look around for something that might be better or be more futureproof.
    Here is what I really would like to know before I can confidently buy one.
    If I plug in multiple devices, lets say one mic in xlr channel 1 and one 6.3mm into channel 3, will I be able to record them onto separate channels(tracks?) in obs? So when I import my video file into premiere I will get a couple of audio sources at the bottom which I can edit separately ( lower volume on mic but not on track 2 )
    I would like my Mic to go to both computers but not the entire mix this is so I can keep discord om my recording pc and still use the ingame chat on my gaming pc with the same mic. If I plug a 6.3mm into the “phones” output and into the mic input on my gaming pc will I be able to only send the mic sound or will it send the entire mix?
    To make things a little more simple I will link to a png file as a reply for the routing that I want to do ( so my comment doesn’t get deleted by CZcams )

    Thanks for the great review! Apparently, Behringer really IS listening to their audience... ;) Here is a quick (really basic!) question though which I haven't been able to answer for myself even after checking out all the (rather sparse) review material on the youtubes:
    I'm considering this neat little mixer to be my "swiss army knife" of PC-Playback-Recording-Routing-Toy. Among other things, I'm in to a good bit of online gaming with my pals, just like any other friendly dude in your neighbourhood.
    However, wenn hooked up to a PC and working as an audio interface, can this little box play back all the PC-Audio WITHOUT bringing it into the main mix? So that I DON'T send all my PC Audio (including the TeamSpeak-Signal) back through the main mix into TeamSpeak and create a nasty Feedback-Loop? And can I hear just my own mic for direct monitoring purposes?
    Oh, and related to that, regarding the new "stereo link feature": Are the monitor sends stereo each, when coming out of the box? So when I hook up, let's say a pair of active studiomonitors via Y-cable only to the "monitor 1"-out - Do I get a Mono-signal?
    I know it sounds silly, 'cause even Behringers low-end interfaces like the trusty U-Phoria UMC 22 here on my desk are able to do this - but I'd love to have confirmation on that by someone, who has actually hands-on-experience with the product ;)
    Thanks a bunch in advance!

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Chris. So depending on how you want to route everything, you can certainly bring back audio from the computer an not put it in the mains. I bring my computer back in on the stereo channels for instance & use the MON 1/2 as a stereo pair for local monitoring, so that's the only place they get turned up for me. The monitor outputs are mono out of the box, just like a standard aux send. Hopefully that helps, let me know if you have more questions.

      @@DcSoundOp Thank you for your swift reply!
      And: Yeah, that helps a lot! Frankly, I would love to do the same thing as you did and use the new "stereo linked" MON 1/2 channel as stereo pair for local monitoring, but I have to admit I am a bit appalled by Behringers decision to make the MON 2 Button constantly flashing when "stereo linked" to MON 1. In a rather dark room / gaming scenario, this has to be quite irritating...
      Whelp, so it'll be Mono-Monitoring via Y-cable for me :D There is still the headphone jack to which the new App can route the MON 1/2 signal now...
      What I still don't get: I downloaded the iOS app and fiddled around with it in demo mode (nice feature for those of us who are considering the purchase, btw!). Why do the Monitor-Layers in the App have Balance-Faders for each channel, when those Monitor sends are still mono? 🤔
      Oh, and while I'm at it, since you seem to have a strong connection to Behringer and since you asked for "wishes / opinions": I would love to see a Mix-Minus-Feature on the Bluetooth-Phone-Connection, just like the Rodecaster does it - this would turn the Flow 8 into the perfect Podcast / remote Interview console! (aka cheap Rodecaster killer ;-))
      Bottom line still: I think I'll pull the trigger on one of these. They do a lot right now, and obviously, with further firmware updates down the line, they can do much, much more.
      Thanks again!

If you're worried about the flashing MON-2 light, you might be able to get by with the bightness literally turned down to 0. It's still just slightly on at that point, but I much more subtle. I agree that the mono channels should be labeled PAN & not balance and I mentioned that to them previously when I noticed it too. @@DcSoundOp The Zoom is not digigal, but it works great to record a small band on an SD card - all tracks + stereo mix. Generous USB interface as well, and enough pre-amps. So its worth the extra money, I'd say. But the Flow8 is digital and both can be powered by battery or charge bank, which is a great feature, when you like to play and record in exotic locations - which I always find inspiring.
      I'd prefer if the L8 was digital, but being analog doesn't make it a no-go as insufficient mic preamps are.
      As for the price, you are right. I'd prefer Behringer had aimed a bit higher. There is a LOT of space between the Flow and their other mixers...

      The monitor send outputs are mono balanced outputs on 1/4" TRS or Tip - Ring - Sleeve connectors. This is the same connector used for the headphone output obviously, but there is it wired as [L | R | Common] and on the monitor output the same connector is wired [+ | - | Comm] so you're only getting a mono signal and making a connection to one side of your headphones. There is also no headphone amp here, although the line level output has enough power to drive most headphones a little bit.
      To use the monitor outputs properly, you'd want to connect them to a headphone amp, or an in-ear monitor transmitter for wireless, or to a monitor speaker. hope that helps.
