    Super-helpful and detailed review. As an owner of an older Behringer USB interface and a separate FX box, the Flow 8 looks really capable as a way of combining everything together. The mix coming in as well as a separate stereo input is a nice touch.

    2 years later, this review and walk-through is still very helpful, and also enjoyable to watch (and listen to) - thanks! Since it was released, there has been a firmware update to add parametric channel EQ and lots more. But what I wonder is whether they changed the compression so the user can set any parameters besides just the percentage?

  • @TytoMobile
    @TytoMobile Před 3 lety +9

    I was really hoping this thing would have parametric EQ.
    Edit: It does on the output side for Mains and Busses. You can also delay your mains and/or monitor lines for time aligning your speakers, which is a huge advantage over the equivalent analog mixer.

    • @ChurchTechTalks
      @ChurchTechTalks  Před 3 lety +2

      Glad you figured out the parametric EQ for mains and busses! It's definitely got a lot to offer, but I do think it's a bit limited in processing power. It's a give and take, but I think they gave quite a bit for the price point.

    Thank you for this detailed demo of the Behringer Flow 8.
    Perhaps you can clarify how the channels are mapped into the DAW.
    The manual says that all channels are "pre-fader" channels.
    Does it mean that channel 1-8 have no FX/EQ and Level-Settings in the recording? What's about the mic gain and limiter?
    Does the main mix (channel 9, 10) include FX, EQ Level Settings in the recording?

    • @ChurchTechTalks
      @ChurchTechTalks  Před 3 lety

      Pre fader generally means it records everything except for fader level, I seem to remember thinking the tap point for the channel was actually just after the preamp (so no EQ/Comp...etc) but maybe I’m remembering that wrong. The mains definitely include the fx.

    Nice review! I‘m playing with my new Flow 8 here and the only thing that‘s a little disappointing is the 2 effects channels, which mean that once you start plugging in more instruments you get more and more limited. Better than nothing and good for adding a reverb to everyone and then one special effect for one instrument, like guitar. But that‘s it! As you say, small setups only.

      Yours is an old comment by now, but just for anyone interested: I‘m planning to use this mixer on my acoustic/electric solo pedalboard, with vocal effects (including harmonies) coming from the Boss VE-500 and guitar effects coming from a whole chain of great pedals. That said, I could well envision using the mixer as a standalone rig for quick-and-dirty shows, too, making it easy to dial in enough channels (vocals, guitar(s), a stompbox pedal and more).

Can I use a mixer to connect both pairs at once so the same audio plays in all the speakers? For example TV audio or streaming devices or also a turn table. Though I understand the additional channels of the Behringer, how would you compare the Behringer interface/pre-amps to the Scarlett 2i2?

    • @ChurchTechTalks
      @ChurchTechTalks  Před 3 lety +2

      I’ve used both extensively and they both sound good. I feel like most interfaces these days sound pretty great and the real limiting factor is often other things (performance, mic selection, mixing techniques...etc.) if you’re deciding between a 2i2 and the Flow 8, I honestly think you’re getting more for your money with the Flow 8. If you think you’ll ever use it live, Flow 8. If you really think you can hear the very subtle and probably unimportant differences in the preamps OR you don’t need any of the extra stuff the Flow 8 offers and would rather save the $80, then go Scarlett.

And possible using the windows mixer to rout my gameplay to another channel. But on the app I cann see a blue main slider with BT/USB on it.
    What is the use of this slider is it the recording Input volume of the usb, or what I'm hoping is it the gain level of my pc audio output.
    As ideally I would like to send my pc audio via usb into the mixer and then send it to main out over to the atem. But ideally I would like some kind of control of my pc audio before sending it out of the mixer.

    • @ChurchTechTalks

      You control the sends to the fx. So you could send any amount of any channel to each of the two fx engines.

    • @mikesrandomchannel
      @mikesrandomchannel Před 2 lety

      It‘s just 2 effects total and you can send as much of each effect to each channel as you want. However, this is pretty limited. If you are a singer/songwriter, for example, you can‘t apply Ambience (vocal) and Ambience (instrument) separately, so you effectively can‘t use that effect (effect #1!) because you‘d have vocal ambience on your guitar or guitar ambience on your vocal. I guess for $250 it‘s too much to ask for and as an interface, this is irrelevant because you get 10 channels to play with. But I‘m struggling to see how this is really useful for anyone playing more than one instrument: you basically get one effect per instrument if you are using a specialised effect, so e.g. Ambience for the vocal, Guitar Reverb for your guitar. But that is that. You can‘t have Flanger and Reverb on your guitar because then your vocal would get nothing. Behringer could at least have had independent effects for the first couple of inputs or something. Anyways, rant over. And like I said, it is a mixer and interface for $250, so the effects are pretty secondary here.

      I don’t believe this is a default feature, but you could totally accomplish it a few different ways. What I would do is create an aggregate device in protools combining the built-in output with the Flow 8, then I’d route your tracks out of the built-in output and I’d use an 1/8” to stereo 1/4” cable to take it back into the Flow 8.

    Thank you very much for this video. You may have said it in the video, but my English is not good enough. That's why I wanted to ask in writing. I live stream on Twitch. What I'm wondering is this. When I use all these effects and digital audio enhancements, will I experience a latency when monitoring the audio? Latency in hearing myself prevents me from speaking fluently. Is it a suitable device for radio broadcasts on Twitch? I use Behringer x1222 analog mixer in my live broadcasts. You know, when I speak, I turn down the volume of the music with a fader. When I'm done speaking, I turn the music back up. Spotify music sound from my computer and my voice from my microphone go to the broadcast as a single stereo mix. In other words, when I add any digital effects to my microphone, my music sound is affected because they all go on the air as a mix. Whereas, I want to make sound improvements to my microphone input and music input separately. Do you think it would be a significant upgrade? Will this solve my problem? For this kind of solution, I normally have to use an expensive and large digital mixer like the Presonus StudioLive 16. And I'm looking for a more compact and cheaper solution. You can also suggest a different mixer. Thank you so much.

      On a DAW, I believe the effects processed on their own channel. Think of it like a bus with a perfect inserted on it. The cool thing is your multi-tracking so you get all of the channels individually and you get the main mix with all the processing. I don’t believe you can change the tap tempo flashing.

I have a question, can you use the effects simultaneously on all channels from channels 1-8 (or even just channels 1 to 4 specially if there's a vocal group) because on tascam mixcast 4 you can only use the effects one channel at a time so when you decide to sing duet either no effects or only one singer will get to have the effects. • @ChurchTechTalks
      @ChurchTechTalks  Před 3 lety

      You can adjust the fader in the app, but these are not flying faders, so you will have to move the fader into position on the mixer. They have a nice little LED indicator to let you know when it's in position and the physical fader won't control volume until you have it in the same position as it is in the app. Sounds more complicated than it is, it's super easy and pretty standard stuff, Presonus does a very similar thing with their studio live consoles.
