    When changing timing belts on d24 engine, you need to set the timing again. The timing changes slightly when parts wear over time. You need a set of specialed tools for locking the camshaft into right place, dial gauge to set injection pump timing. Crankshaft pulley bolt must be replaced and tightened to 350NM otherwise it will unscrew itself and destroy the engine. Making your own timing marks is very wrong. Also for sitting for such a long time headgasket will not last long and Injectors should be taken to diesel shop for testing, spray pattern, opening pressure. This engine will not last long like this.

      @@cmanesq the timing can't be that wrong as the engine starts and runs with not much trouble. yes they should probably check timing is exact but you need special tools which they probably don't have. this is a budget build/resto and complete overhaul of headgasket etc would be a lot more work. i'm sure it's good info but came across as very negative and critical.

      @@socalguy829 you are on the right track. The timing does not need special tools, ghetto way is to use digital caliper. Before that the cold advancing mechanism lever needs to be set for hot engine, the two stacked square bits on the cable can be "overlapped" when you think about the structure for a while.
      The headgasket will live as long as it feels like, and the sitting will not make much difference. However the n/a d24 does not have oil swuirters for the pistons, and it is fairly common for those to seize the piston rings while sitting. Also valve clearance is an issue, vag diesels have bad guides very often and they wear the seat surfaces -> valve clearance goes to zero and that ruins compression.

      I was wondering a bit myself, the crankshaft bolt came out way too easy as you normally would need a 3/4" impact or breaker bar plus tool to stop the engine from turning. Setting the timing with the dial indicator is important, a small deviation in pump timing can have a big impact on how well it'll run and start. Luckily basic tool sets for timing the VW VE injection pumps can be bought for very cheap. I personally wouldn't worry about the headgasket but having (or doing it youself if you can get your hands at the tools) the injectors pop tested is always a good idea with old diesels.

      You are right. The crankshaft nut is the killer of almost all of these engines, and the timing belt. If that nut gets just a tiny hair loose, the engine is unrepairable and will self-disintegrate in a second. Please make sure the bolt is securely done to the factory specs. 350NM+, no joke, i repeat, NO JOKE.

      @@DerRolkin But it really isn't, this has been scientifically disproven multiple times now. Of course it depends on how many kilometres you cover but after a certain distance driven, it will always be more 'eco friendly' to buy and drive a new cleaner car than it is to sustain an old car.

      there's even a warehouse in Sweden with old parts that never got bought... no idea how big it still might be as my last experience with Volvo is from 2008-2010, but still... i know working for a dealer in that time that we had parts ordered through Volvo-Belgium from this warehouse for a client with several older volvo's

      Same with BMW.
      They have a “Mobile Tradition “ division that makes sure parts are being produced for older cars.
      Most parts are available within 2 days.

      Generally speaking, European automakers keep more parts available after the model has stopped being produced. Of course, the "catch" is that they didn't say it would be cheap! 😉😅

    Tip for those radiator bolts that broke. As soon as you feel a bolt getting tight on the way out, stop and spray some penetrating fluid onto the threads and screw it back in again. This lubricates the threads. Try winding it back out again and if it tightens again, repeat the process. What's happening is you are trying to draw the rust flakes on the end of the bolt through the threads, which is what makes it seize and break. If you can access the back of the captive nut, you can wire brush the end of the bolt to remove some of the rust, which will help a lot.

Si tuviera una docena de Chevrolet 400 rs o ss o algunos falcón te los sacan de las manos .

    Memphis. Great work on the Volvo. I always used to name it Tim the Tank, now it is Greta. I love it. When my father told that you guys were actually restoring it, it made my day. If i had the knowledge I would have done it 10 years ago but I have two left hands... I had many amazing years and trips with it. So many great memories and aventures. I literally got teary when seeing the video. Awesome.

    Congrats on this rebuild guys, that is a lot of good work well done :)
    At the start I was worried that you would not replace the brakes themselves after bleeding the brake fluid, but fortunately you did. It also seems that after all the belt replacements, one of the cylinders doesn't really want to cooperate: compare 1:00 (before) with 24:20 and 28:37 (after). Definitely something weird going on there. Other than all that: great work. The new hinges and hood are looking fantastic. Who would have thought that this car has been standing for 10 years... Looking forward to the next episode, please take all the time you need.

    Great to see Greta looking better - may I suggest you consider doing some major rust intervention on her later in the year - patching some of her holes and dropping and treating the rear subframe and patching up, painting and undersealing any rust holes when you have time. She had a really hard life being left out in that field. You might want to put something like Dinitrol in her cavities. You scored a bargain here - these are a very rare sight here in England. When I was a boy they were not uncommon. Lot's of tradesmen used to haul all their tools/materials around in them and they were a superb family car. The Swedes really knew how to build them!

      Swedish Citroën fanatic here that also have a 940 that was imported to Sweden from France. Fun fact which may be useful if you drive Volvo in France. My 940 that was sold as new in France was built in the Volvo factory of the city of Kalmar Sweden. It's well known that cars made in Kalmar was of very high quality. It was a special factory who built special vehicles to extra high standards. And I get proud when I hear a French person saying good things about old Volvos. :)

    You are doing a terrific job and congratulations on focusing on mechanical and safety first. I would suggest that when installing things like new hinges, take a few extra minutes to sand blast and shoot them in chassis black.( Never mind. just saw that you did this later on. 😉) One less thing to do later. Press on great videos! Excellent paint on timing cover and valve cover!

    1:01 I love that sound. Years ago, I had an '81 Audi 5000 Diesel. That old Diesel clatter is a wonderful sound in the morning!

    I had a 1990 volvo 740 wagon for $500, drove it for many years , easy to work on , lots of room in the bay.
    Parts were cheap too .
    I now drive a volvo v70 AWD, more complicated, expensive parts for the AWD and turbo but vastly better performance and comfort. its great you guys all learn this skill young in life, that will serve you very well in the future.

    Your making much greater progress with your 240 GL than I ever managed to on my 244 DL in half the time. So happy for your luck with the used headlights and hood, along with the hinges. Will look forward to upcoming content. Very best wishes.

    You could've get the headlight reflector rechromed by a plating company. I will do these procedure for 2 of my cars.

    Really good video. I may actually buy an older Volvo. I work for Volvo over here in the uk sadly it’s more the newer stuff but we do get the old cars every now and again and it’s great to see

      @@bobjohnson205 it’ll be pretty easy to do I can’t say ive ever seen that engine because I haven’t it’s more d5’s and d4’s I work on. However any workshop manual for example Haynes will be perfect that will tell you how to do it. Of your trying to adjust clearances it’ll most likely be similar to any older engine of them years

      @@bobjohnson205 not that old the one we do get doesn’t have that engine in. We’re not trained to work on older vehicles like that I’m afraid and don’t see that engine as a lot of people either don’t have older volvos and if they do they service them at home

    Really enjoying these videos, thank you for sharing with us. We never had the diesel version in the UK, my parents had a 1991 240 GL Estate in the same metallic blue as this, brings back happy memories of the long drives to France for summer holidays.

    Old Volvo diesels (D24,D24TD,D24TDIC) are expensive as fuck in sweden, the gasoline ones are cheap during the spring/summer but starts skyrocketing in price as soon as the snow comes haha!
