    For me:
    1. World 8 - honestly feels like a true final challenge with tanks, battleships, the airforce airship fleet and other satisfyingly challenging levels.
    2. World 5 - love how you start on the ground then make your way up a tower to the clouds.
    3. World 7 - yes I know this world is unpopular and as a kid I hated it but I love the challenge here and maze like structure, that water level can go to hell though.
    4. World 6 - honestly just like the wide selection of levels and enjoyable fortress and airship levels.
    5. World 4 - a bit overrated to me mostly because everyone seems to call this their favourite but still a very cool world. I just like a few others more.
    6. World 3 - love the music and some enjoyable levels. Love the structure of this world.
    7. World 2 - very good but still has begginer vibe.
    8. World 1 - understandably easy but less interesting compared to other worlds.

I got a lot of enjoyment from this video. Your arguments for your favourite were all really well thought out. I definitely agree with with your top pick. Sky Land is incredible.
love how the spiral fortress links together the two worlds, and it helps give the game a reason to make the world as a whole have more variety. For example, the ground level is like World 1, but with added difficulty to keep it fresh. And the high level is the Sky area that really tests the player's platforming skills over long bottomless pits throughout the levels.
I also think the Fortress levels in Sky Land are the strongest Fortress levels in the game. I love the tricky Thwomp puzzles that are littered in the first fortress, and the high pipe that can be difficult to reach with Racoon Mario. I remember being blown away when I managed to fly up there first time when I was a kid. The second Fortress is very creative as well, since it has a lava gimmick that spits fire from the roof as well as the floor.
This world also takes advantage of the player's platforming skills, and it does a good job with getting them prepared with the Worlds that lie ahead. As much as I like Giant Land, I do think it does a poor job with bringing anything new to the table in terms of difficulty. I think that Giant Land should of came before Water Land, since Water Land is steep when it comes to upping difficulty so early in the game.
Here is how I would rank each world:
    1. Sky Land - 10/10
    2. Ice Land - 9.5/10
    3. Pipe Land - 9/10
    4. Water Land - 8.5/10
    5. Dark Land - 8/10
    6. Giant Land - 7.5/10
    7. Grass Land - 7/10
    8. Desert Land - 6.5/10

World three has always been my favorite since I fell in love with the frog suit at first sight and enjoy how it changes up the way water levels work. I also like that it's early enough in the game that you can get there pretty quickly without warping, which was especially important when I was a kid and didn't always have time for a full playthrough before someone or something made me turn the game off.

For me, the dead give away that there was more to the map of level 2 was once all the hammer brothers were defeated, you could still hear one moving around after levels ended.
Edit after finishing... Definitely agree with level 5. Kirubu's Shoe, the Tinooki suit, the strange transition castle... it was like there was something new in every stage. I mean the whole game had that feel the first time through but 5 really solidified it and it set the stage for the final 3 worlds.

Ranking from favorite to least is difficult mostly because of my 3rd through 5th picks. They can be flip flopped. This is my favorite video game of all time so even my least favorite Lands are still great.
    1. Desert Land: Desert Land has always fascinated me. It's my favorite Land. I'm very intrigued by ancient Egypt and summer is my favorite season. That's what it reminds me of. I have fond memories of being 8 and getting past the Angry Sun the first time without a P wing. That's one of my favorite levels. Desert Land is underrated to me. It doesn't get enough love. The sand and exploration is satisfying here especially 2-4 and 2-5. I love the design of the fortress with beautiful gray bricks. It's comforting. I wish the pyramid was filled with more gold coins, a mummy, Nefertiti like enemy and tombs.
    2. Ice Land: Ice Land reminds me of those cold winters. Like Christmastime with warm cocoa. It has one of the most aesthetically pleasing designs with glaciers and snow. This is my 2nd favorite Land. Level 6-6 and 6-9 are some of the best as water levels. The coins frozen in ice is cool and I love to use my fire power here. The icy fortress is so unique. Funny how there is one level that's a grassy plains level with no ice.
    3. Sky Land: The reggae music sets the tone for a cool Land that most of us love. Kuribo's shoe is cool. I like the underground cave in 5-2. One of my favorite levels is the spiral tower which leads to the sky. I can only imagine how sweet it would be in real life. The sky is cool but Lakitu is annoying. This section makes me think about heaven. Stars in the clouds with soothing music.
    4. Giant Land: Giant Land is probably the most unique land because we've never seen anything like it before in Mario games. We had seen everything else from 1-3 and 5-8. The water on Giant Lands map is a gorgeous deep blue. It's fun seeing enemies 4,5 times their normal size. I wish Buzzy Beetles and Lakitu were larger. This Land is short and sweet and is in the shape of a Koopa Troopa. The magic doors are fun to go through and this is where we meet Hot foot.
    5. Water Land: This is the second largest land after Ice. Water levels can be fun. 3-5 is my favorite water level. It's easy and pleasing. There you have Big Bertha, Jelectro, Cheep Cheeps, and Blooper nanny's. Boss Bass in 3-3 and 3-8 is annoying but a challenge. It would be cool if they played Jaws like music in his levels. I like taking a ride on the canoe to the other islands and the frog suit is useful here. The island the castle is located on is the shape of Japan.
    6. Grass Land: Our beginning stages offer easy levels with not too much challenge. I actually wish there were more grass levels here like 1-2. We obtain our first 2 of 3 whistles here. There is actually pretty good variety with a grass level, scrolling, cave, and high platform with bottomless pits.
    7. Dark Land: Koopa wasn't playing around here. You start off with 2 battleship scrolling levels in a dark background. Bobombs, Cannons, Rocky Wrench are all here. The hand trap levels can be annoying when pulled down but mostly the flying Cheep Cheep level. The autoscrolling airship is a very tough level. It just looks scary in Dark Land. Koopa skulls and fire everywhere. The fortress here is probably the toughest in the game. Koopas fight is an adrenaline rush but could have been harder. He lives in a cool looking castle though.
    8. Pipe Land: Historically my least favorite but still fun. It has the hardest water level in 7-4. One of the most interesting levels is the first fortress. I call it the silent fortress. If you don't know what you're doing here, you'll be lost. You can gain 100 lives by turning the bricks into coins with the p switch. The constant mazes and plant life here are abundant. Easy to get lost. The music is jazzy and I like how the water looks on the map.

The genius of the second flute is that you're not supposed to find it in your first play-through, hence why you get the letter hinting it after you finish the sand world (preventing you from skipping levels the first time you play it). In later worlds you get hints about destroyable blocks and use it in consequent play-throughs to find the world skipping flute

Really interesting list! If you don't mind, I'll be sharing me own opinions on each world by order of progression:
1 - Grass Land - What can I say? It's about as classic, iconic and standard as it gets! Two ground levels, two athletic levels, an underground level, a fortress (that opens up an unnecessary shortcut), a Hammer Bros fight for good measure... yeah, it's pretty good, a great start! Love the grassy hills level, it has a really nice look to it.
2 - Desert Hill - I'll be honest, I'm not too hot on this one. The desert levels are fine, but for some reason I usually don't look forward to them... Maybe it's all the quicksand, or the fire snakes of the first level. The Angry Sun was dangerous, yeah, but I found it to be a cool level nonetheless. And yeah, I have to agree, not a ton of platforming to do in there... But at least I remember the secrets being particularly fun! And I still liked this one ok enough.
3 - Seaside - Yeah... here's one I really dread... Not because of the swimming, the swimming's fine. It's because of two things. First, the Boss Bass. These levels were always nerve racking to me... Secondly, its length. Damn, does it kinda overstay its welcome, especially as only the third world, especially when you remember the Big Island wasn't all that big of a world (or at least didn't feel like it). Still, I do like the world, but I remember my excitement being at its lowest there. Though, maybe that will change if I do more playthroughs. The Lakitu and Spike levels were pretty cool tho, and I like the bridges thing on the world map.
4 - Big Island - Yeah, I liked this one! Not too much to say about it as of now, but the level where you could switch sizes was pretty cool!
5 - The Sky - This one feels like two different worlds! One is Grass Land 2 but better, and the other is Bottomless Pit: the Video Game. But jokes aside, this was one I liked quite a lot, both in theming and levels! All the athletic levels of the entire game are usually the most distinct, due to the gimmicks most of them have, and this world is filled with them! And yeah, the Goomba Shoe is still one of the coolest (secret?) power-ups around!
6 - Iced Land - Like Sea Side, I dread this one... but unlike Sea Side, it's in a good way! It feels menacing, but it is really fun! It's also the longest level, so by this point I was already dreading the thought of losing all my lives (even if it was SMA4:SMB3 that I was playing). Plus, the world map song is just so... chilling. Like, it literally gives me the chills! It's so cold and distant... makes you feel all lonely in the middle of the snow wasteland. Also I like Level 5, it's a neat change of pace, the puzzle wasn't that tough, once things started to loop, I just explored a bit more. Pulling up the maneuver was tricky but satisfying. Felt like I was escaping from a cave after being snowed in!
7 - Pipe Maze - This was actually one of my favorite ones, at least in terms of theming, and I do like the more explorative nature of some of these levels. Too many hidden blocks might be an issue for some in terms of pacing, but honestly, I kinda like that sorta puzzles, where you have to hit the right blocks to proceed. The labyrinthine nature of some levels is something I do like a bit, not too much when it sends me back, but I've always liked mazes. The Block Fortress was interesting... it was a bit annoying not knowing what to do... but once I found the P-Switch, man, I was feeling like a mastermind racking up those lives with dem coins!
8 - Dark Land - This one is iconic for me, but for different reasons. In the cartoon, it was this really scary place where the Mario Bros, Toadstool and Toad went to go find the Music Box, and that was my favorite episode due to how much of a Mario level a good chunk of it looked like! In the actual game, it's also a pretty cool world. The variety in Bowser's armada, with tanks, fast-paced jet ships, and naval ships, shows that he's packing some heat! The trap levels were not that tough I think, but the one with the Angry Sun was nerve racking (thank God for that secret passageway). The Castle was a great way to send things off, really liked how it has its own style of blocks making it up, and the final battle was quite fun too!
9 - Warp Zone - It's a Warp Zone. What am I supposed to say about it? There's only 3 Warp Whistles in the game, and with only two, you can go straight towards the last world! I've always loved that.

Honestly, the levels themselves are pretty alright, I guess desert themes just don't tend to be my favorite. Though the fire snakes on the first level always make it tough to try and find secrets. Also, the GBA version makes the underground part of the pyramid level look like... a typical underground level instead of a tomb-like area, that just plain sucks.

That secret on world 2 is news to me. WoW, it’s been more than 30 years and I found out something in a game that I didn’t know. I knew you were going to say Sky Land. I remember the first time I saw that one at my friend/neighbours house on the old NES. I returned home for food then came back later asking about it and oh Noe’s, after I left those siblings had a bit of a giggle in that room and one of them pressed the reset button.

    Personally
    8. World 1: Very basic but good starting world
    7. World 4: It just seems like your basic world but you can change the size, kind of cool but I don’t like it as much as others, I have this same problem Tiny Huge Island from SM64
    6. World 2: one of the only Mario games where I actually like the desert world but I still don’t like desert worlds too much
    5. World 7: Kind of like how it’s a maze because it gives the game variety but the dead ends can be annoying
    4. World 6: Ice physics can be kind of annoying but I like the challenge of this world, not too much to say
    3. World 3: I really like this world despite it being mostly water, I love how frantic and hectic the big fish level can be with the lowering and rising platforms
    2. World 8: Probably my favorite final world in 2D Mario I like how challenging and final it is, the fact that Airships are at the end of every world but this world has them everywhere like they’re just regular levels just adds to the finality of the world
    1. World 5. I love the creativity of the levels here and love how there are 2 parts and the sky has my favorite stages in the game.

I played this along with the other 3 Super Mario Bros games on the 30 year old 16-bit game, "Super Mario All-Stars." When I was a kid playing Super Mario Bros 3 on this set of games, I only played all of Grass Land and the first part of Desert Hill. But playing it again on my phone, I played through all 8 worlds of the game. So here's my list from best to worst for all those worlds just in my opinion.
    1. Dark Land/Castle of Koopa
    2. Big Island
    3. Grass Land
    4. Sky Land
    5. Desert Hill
    6. Iced Land

Why not, here’s a full top eight
    8. Pipe Maze. Map is annoying to traverse, the levels get really frustrating, and it’s not that interesting thematically. Even the music is the most bland to me.
    7. Sorry to the Uploader, but The Sky. All the worlds in Mario 3 have their strengths, and I enjoy parts of The Sky, but I don’t like Lakitu very much, and combine his frequent appearances with the brutal Flame Chomp climbing stage towards the end, and I always clench my behind when I reach this one.
    6. Big Island. I like it don’t get me wrong, and as someone who grew up with 64, it was cool to see a stage that was Tiny-Huge Island’s predecessor, but I just like others more. Besides, Sledge Bros are really annoying in their debut, though I guess it’s appropriate seeing as Hammer Bros were too.
    5. Ocean Side. Lots of really cool secrets and puts the Frog Suit to great use.
    4. Grass Land. Excellent start that showcases so many mechanics in a fairly short and sweet world, at least compared to the rest.
    3. Dark Land, Castle of Bowser. I like the idea of an all out attack from the Koopa King, and I too wish more Mario finales were this frantic and challenging.
    2. Desert Hill. This is one of my favorite platformer desert levels. The angry sun, the spring blocks, the fire snakes, it’s really creative and holds up strong against its later imitators in the series.
    1. Iced Land. I like the eerie map theme, the challenging but never annoying physics and tricks the levels throw at you, and the secrets are some of the most fun in the entire game to figure out.

The clue is the hammer brother sound moving on the over world of the world 2. Once you have cleared the hammer bros you see on the man over world screens you still hear them moving indicating there is more hammer bros stages on the map that is hidden. The best part about the sky world is when you would return to the land it was a mini level to get back down but then you would have to redo the tower to get back to the sky.

Excellent ranking! World 7 has always been my least favorite, because it's boring and the levels are tedious. I don't really like World 4 much either because it looks a bit too similar to World 3 and feels a bit dull. World 3 is my favorite because it's incredibly refreshing to go from a desert to a water area. World 3's map is also excellent and there's a good amount of level variety.

I recently just got a repro that has all of them, and they've made it my new preferred version of SMB3. They also make me wish we had an original 2D Mario on the GBA as much as I love the games we got on it. If Luigi was handled just like how he was in Advance 2, it'd be the perfect version of Mario 3 for me.
Anyways as for ranking the worlds, idk how I'd rank them. Agreed on Pipe Maze though, Sea Side has always been my favorite for some reason. Good points on The Sky, it, Big Island and Iced Land are also high for me.

World 5 is my most special world with 2 parts BUT i wish there was a grass level along with a coin heaven bonus level in it,
World 1 i good but i wish there was a water level in it,
World 3 is great but i wish there was a underground level in it,
World 6 is great but it should,ve needed a true water level in it instead,
World 2 is good but i wish you could get a coin ship there as well,
World 8 is good, but i wish there was a underground level and more navi and airship levels,in fact i wish bowser was insise an airship level instead,i also wish there were toud houses, mini games,a coin ship with minus coins as well as hammerbrothers,

Warp whistles shouldn't require either of that, tbh. There should be a really subtle hint towards it that only seasoned players would understand. It could be a row of coins that just look off. It could be an NPC toad talking about holding down on a white block for three seconds, getting players to try it in levels with the white blocks, it's not rocket science to design an in-game hint that's subtle.

I recently tried SMB3 and enjoyed the compact nature of its platforming, yet the level design in the last few worlds felt extremely illogical and blatantly unfair. Call me a newbie/noob, but I really prefer the NSMB games with their Star Coin implementation, larger levels, and multiplayer chaos as well as the improved technology they run off of.

I think you are being a bit unfair with Pipe Land. You made it seem like only the second half of it is good. There are still good levels in the first half. Level 7-3 is an amazing and very fun use of the cool gimmick of beating an entire level with starman power. 7-1 is a very good and tricky stage of vertical platforming. 7-4 is a good water level, and the most challenging in the game. And while I'm not a fan of the blocks you have to bump to be able to get across in 7-2, it is otherwise a pretty good level, and very tricky. Only the first fortress and 7-5 really become obnoxious mazes (and the world map itself as well). At least the fortress is no pain in replays, and it is also great to farm lives!
