What's AIGOO? How to say OMG in Korean (KWOW #3)

  • 아이고 (aigo) is used when you are in shock, pain, suffering, or when you cannot believe something. This type of OMG is used towards a more negative oriented situation, though it is sometimes used with a comedic tone. You'll often hear it pronounced as 아이구 (aigoo), but the correct way to write it is 아이고 (aigo).

    I'm a total beginner at Korean. Since I'm going to study in Seoul for one semester this autumn, I really want to learn the language, and your videos are perfect! Just memorizing hangul without context didn't work very well, and so these small videos teaching me one word at a time are really great for learning. (Just three videos in, and I've started to recognize some letters.)

    Whenever there is a korean syllable that is just a vowel, instead of just putting the vowel, they put a silent consonent symbol in front of it. Because in hangeul you always want to have at least one consonant and one vowel.

    @Canagemo To be honest I'm still very much a beginner at Korean so I'm not too familiar with the phrase 어떡해 itself, I just know that it's different from 어떻게. However my resources do suggest that 어떡해 is a shortened form of a longer word/phrase.
    I would speculate that while it probably doesn't literally mean "omg," it can be colloquially used as just a phrase of exasperation or confusion. Though most places I look tell me that it just means "What do I do?"

  • @PiroMunkie
    @PiroMunkie Před 13 lety

    @BarbaraInLove Remember that sometimes consonants blend together. For example with 감사합니다 (gam-sa-hap-ni-da), when you say the "hap-ni" you don't open your mouth to really define the "p" sound. You go from a closed mouth straight into the 'n' which makes it sound more like "ham-ni."
    If it's not it's own exception (which there are some in Korean) 사랑했던 is probably the same way. When you get to the double-s your tongue is already in position to make the ㄷ sound, so the S's just get overwritten.
