The demo song was a challenge as the drums inside the M3R are very crisp and not very dense low end. I had to layer, process, eq and compress to make the kick beefy enough and a combination of that kick and some snares makes out the final snare in the track. Again, layered, eq'ed and compressed.
The pads in the verses are made by multi tracking several pads and detuning them track by track. Just good old fashioned mixing.
The vocals are from a vocal sample download I bought many years ago and after all these years they finally came to life. The vocals are heavily pitched, stretched and manipulated to sound they way they do.
The demo song has loads of Valhalla VintageVerb on it, but the patch examples in the last part of the video uses only effects from the M3R, no external effects at all on these.
The demo song here is just another version, with another top-line of a song I released commercially some time ago, you can find the original here:

Growing up I listened to so much synth-pop and it's only natural that my own music takes inspiration from many of the acts I loved back then. I still love them and listen to them!
Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Erasure, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, The Human League, Propaganda. FGTH, Ultravox, OMD, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Alphaville, A-ha as well as loads of artists doing what is now called Italo Disco. And many more great acts like Nik Kershaw, Spandau Ballet, Wham, Dire Straits ++

There may be some magic in that Burr Brown DAC. I don't hear noise, screech, or harshness. Smooth and warm. One little chip can make or break the quality of overall sound.

    • @nickwallette6201
      @nickwallette6201 Před 2 lety +3

What's hilarious about this ... the love for that DAC ... is this was back when DACs were so technically difficult to manufacture (and therefore expensive), that you had to use a SINGLE, MONO converter and a sample-and-hold circuit to multiplex the DAC's output for each analog output channel.
The PCM54 (and siblings) was really popular around this time. Roland used it a lot as well. Some of those synths had 6 or 8 channels, so the DAC was converting at up to 8x the sample rate.
But, were we concerned about the S&H? The jitter of the sample clock? The linearity of all that high-speed conversion and analog switching? Nope. Just enjoying the sound.
Today's ICs will _beat the pants off_ that old circuit in terms of specifications. Yet, we'll look back in fondness for these old boxes, often at lower-than-CD quality sampling rates (often 32kHz or so), tiny tiny ROM sets, and Rube-Goldberg converter arrangements. :-) Just goes to show, if you put attention to detail into the design and implementation of the hardware, the samples, and the patches, that counts for a whole heck of a lot.

Scott Cupp I had an EX5 before and i really liked it. Ive had sooooo many synths and modules over the span of 30 years and wish i had all the ones I've let go back. Even with its inability to transmit the arpeggiator over midi id like to have my old yamaha csx1 back. There were alot of presets on there that were actually pretty good from the factory. One in particular was a spot on sound that Brian May used on the remix of under pressure from one of Queens greatest hits albums. Don't know if you're familiar with that particular remix but he used a keyboard in place of the clean guitar. But ive had to let go of so many because of money issues or thought well ill get another one sometime down the road and just never was able to. I guess in all this rambling my point is to anyone that if you dont ever have to get rid of your music equipment no matter what the piece may be dont do it. Just put it to the side for awhile and i promise you will want or need to use it down the road.

Could't agree more, everyone is always drooling over the M1 and it reaches ridiculous prices on the 2nd hand market, when a T3 IS literally an M1, same 99 samples and drum samples as an M1, only with more samples added, same effects algorithms as the M1, same synthesis engine and OS as the M1, the only thing different is the larger display and the disk drive.
I bought my (mint) T3ex around 2014 for 100€!!! .... i mean 100€..... i didn't "bought it", the guy "offered it" to me and i gave him a "tip" to go and grab a beer or 10... A STEAL!! I've seen some M1's go for 700€ plus!!
I also have two 01/Wfd's, have a lot of the samples the M1/T3 has, only with better resolution and an improved synth engine derived from the M&T series AI synthesis, and a lot of the VS samples from the Wavestation, waveshaping, more effects, more rom sample memory, and it can sound much more full and fat than the M1/T3 will ever can, to me it's a Pad machine....

If it’s possible to reflect “Lessons in Love”, .”It’s a Sin” and (of all things) the Fatboy Slim single “Praise You”, I say you did it with the intro track, Espen.
At a glance, the M3r physically reminds me of one of its successors, the 05rw (I miss the one I used to own). There may be little correlation between them, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they had more in common than just the M1 soundest. I realize that a key difference is that the M3r predates the implementation of General MIDI by a couple of years.

Very nice video, thanks for showcasing this module form 30+ years ago. You have caused great confusion in my life: I was about to sell a Wavestation EX, M1r and an M3r, and now I don't want to part with any of them!!! One thing I want to point out about the M3r is that unlike the M1r, the M3r has waveforms from the M1 AND the T series, so it does have some sonic uniqueness to it. In that sense, the M3r actually has more in common with the M1REX, which I believe also has waveforms from the T series. Cheers!

Also, the M3r really shines with aftermarket / custom patches. Around 10 years ago, I found a file online with about a dozen sysex files for the M3r, and some of these patches really took the M3r to a new level. This thing is capable of some incredible sounds and textures. I have no idea where I found these sysex files, but I'm sure that they're floating around somewhere out there!

01/W was the "high end" successor to the M1
X3 was a "middle end" successor to the M1
01R/W is the rack version of the 01/W and X3R is the rack version of the X3
      03R/W is a stripped down 01/RW and 05R/W is a stripped down X3R (just as the M3R is a stripped down M1R)
Arguably the X5D / X5DR was the most evolved AI2 synth in the series, it was the low end successor to the 01/W...
But for us that was born in the mid 70:s and conditioned on the orginal DX7, the D-50 and the M1, those synths still just sounds the best! I must be a little different to a lot of people on this one.... a lot of people drool about the M1 Piano and the Organ2 patch, i never really did... Always thought the Piano sounded way too bright and hard for my music, same as the Organ2 patch with the perc settings a bit too pronounced in the sample. Mind you i never really cared much for House or Dance music, especially in the 90's.
And the M1 was all i had in the 90's, i played Pop, Rock and everything in between, apart from Praise and Worship music in my church at the time. And was always pissed lusting for those great Stainway-ish Roland lush piano patches when all i had to work with was the bloody bright and sharp M1 piano sample, but i would got by nevertheless... If you add a dx7 type EP and a pad in the background it will sound better.
As for the Organ2, i always wanted some Hammond type patched without perc, so the Organ2 was used very little.
Always preferred the T3 Piano2 patch way better than the M1 Piano. To me the M1 as well as the T series, as always excelled in bell-ish patches, some pads, the E. pianos, some strings, pan flute and related patches, solo sax, and the choir/vocal pads.
Well... and the Seinfeld slap bass too... 🤣

Funny thing remembering my M1 is that I liked the DWGS samples more, when trying to create my own sounds.
I'm quite happy now with only the iM1 on the iPad. Sounds very close and has a lot of additional "cards" shipped. And has filter resonance, which was not even put back into Korg products till the mid 9ties. Ok, my X2 has a limp function, which emphasizes the resonance a bit, but otherwise it really sounds too compressed and uninspiring. In the garage at the mo.
The "nice" thing about the X2 was though, that when you switch programs on the fly during live playing, the old sound still carried until you released that note, blending over. Super.
But that is now digressing into the 9ties, so sorry.

I'm curious why you say that this is NOT a ROMpler? My experience has been that any instrument that uses non-changeable sampled waveforms as oscillators is a ROMpler. It isn't about whether there are filters or modulation capabilities. It's the fact that it uses sampled static waveforms instead of generated waveforms. So even the E-MU Proteus 2500 and its Command Station brethren with their Z-Plane filters or the JV line of Rolands fit the ROMpler category. I'm not saying that you're mistaken. I'm just curious where you got your definition of a ROMpler and what you believe qualifies as one. Peace.
