Cam Montgomery Jr SLAYS the audience with his comedic performance during Wednesday Amateur Night at The Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York! Date: May 11th, 1988
@@montgomerycamjr All those great entertaining moments from Amateur Night at Showtime At The Apollo are some of the building blocks of my early childhood. Some were outstanding and some were not. This performance was ahead of it's time for many reasons, but I can just imagine someone staying up late to watch this one, just to use these jokes in the lunch room at school 🤣🤣🤣 Y'all used to keep us RAZOR SHARP! 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
After I exited the theater, a group of four, young black men approached me. One of them said, "Hey, man, tell them you're not really like that. That you were just acting." I said, "Yeah, I was just acting. That's a scene from a play I wrote." The young guy turned back to his friends and said, "See, I told y'all he was just acting. Man, you was good. You was good!" 😂😂😂
My friend, thank you sooooo very much for that critique. Truth be told, though, it wasn't a comedy routine at all. It was an actual monologue from a one-act play I wrote while in college. Because of the way audiences responded to it, I simply performed it in a few talent competitions. I won at The Apollo and I also won with it at Indianapolis Black Expo with singer Jody Watley as a judge. I wonder if she remembers my performance!!! 😉😉😉
Looks like you don't need to wonder much longer, Mr. Cam has responded to your inquiry. Bravo to you Montgomery for being audacious enough to do this performance in a hostile crowd when being "open" was still taboo.
@@spring95q Well, it was actually a scene from a play, but it was indeed pretty courageous of me to perform it in front of those folks!!! Thanks so much for giving it a look!!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
@@montgomerycamjr THANK YOU! You made my morning...I woke the whole household and then told them to hush cuz I was trying to hear you when they asked why was I so loud🫣🤷🏾♀️! @@thomastaylor1217 You've made my day. I recall being scared to death on that stage, because The Apollo audience can be brutal. In fact, the act that went on before me was mercilessly booed off. And that character I performed could have gone either way with that audience. Luckily for me, they LOVED him!!! I performed the same act on their tv show, It's Showtime At The Apollo (and WON!!!)

@@montgomerycamjr This routine is so good on so many levels. The intro to just sitting down and getting situated implies so much, and the crowds reaction. Why am I just now discovering you?
@@jsvideogameclips7497, I was scared crapless about performing a monologue in front of that crowd, but true enough, by taking my time to allow the audience to feel the character's presence was key. Just crossing my legs like that prepared them for what was to come!!! 😂
