I have no intention of actually doing this but I still appreciate the thought and care you put into making this. I feel like I would ruin the soldering. Excellent flight at the end!
Thanks! I have alot of videos geared towards beginners and actually just published a "how to solder" video that you may find useful.
check it out: czcams.com/video/2funvs3nU7U/video.html
You can always practice on dead electronic boards as well. Definitely recommend that before potentially ruining a nice board :)
You should try it out first, instead of sabotaging your abilities already.
@@TRONCATFPV I'm going to give fpv diy a shot thanks to the effort you've put forth in your videos, thanks for the easy sub!
Yh I really appreciate that
I thoroughly enjoy this start to finish build. A great starting point for me since I am an absolute beginner to all of it. I appreciate all the links in the description; you have a new subscriber too! Thumbs up and bell rung. Thanks!
wow what a great video. Im not in electronics but the way you showed that feels like it's easy tempting to start doing it by myself. Thanks
I really want to get into fpv flying and this was the exact video i was looking for. thanks for puttng in the time and even putting the links in the description to make everything so easy! awesome video!
Euj❤
definitely appreciate the straight forward simple approach. right to the point .great editing .clean build.it looked like it flew pretty decent too. thanks, man. keep em coming.
Thanks! yea this drone honestly flew alot better than I thought it would since the motors were some of the cheapest I could find haha.
Thanks for watching!
This reminds me of building my first RC car in the 80s. Great job for introducing this subject to the community!!
I was too young to build my first hobby grade by myself. I still have it. Back before they came rtr
amazing build! I'm new to this and just discovered it, but man now I'm hyped will def. try it out! Thanks for your vids!
Wonderful built man! Kudos to your effort. The camera quality is good! Awesome flying skills!
great tutorial. thanks for taking the time to put this together so well. the beat loop helps a lot too 💪🏿
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching 🙌
OMG! One of the coolest vids I’ve seen in a long time. I desperately want to get into drone flying. When I was about 11-12 years old, I built the balsa wood u-control airplanes with .49 gas motors. Lots of fun but nothing like this. Had no idea what u were doing or talking about but loved every minute of it. And that flight vid, WOW! Subscribed…
Thank you! I will have more videos coming out soon where I break everything down into laymans terms so beginners can understand the parts that go into these drones.
Thanks for watching!
Learned so much from this video, Video is informative, easy to follow, has all the tips and tricks for setting up the drone correctly the first time! Definitely looking forward to more videos from you!
I'm glad it was helpful! I'm going to have some more drone build videos coming out very soon!
Could you pls advise maximum payload of this drone?
This is actually quite inspiring I am going to give this a go thanks for the informative content.
This looks like a fun hobby. I was not expecting the flight at the end to be so impressive. I'll have to check out some of your other videos.
I actually never thought about building a drone or even watched vids about freestyle. But now this rly inspired me to start this hobby.thank you!
same
Impressive! I obviously have a great deal to learn and it looks like its going to be a pretty steep learning curve!
Hey, thanks for this video. I had a drone about six years ago, but I ended up losing it. I've often thought about getting back in to the hobby. I love electronics/3D printing projects, so I'm seriously considering trying this build.
Gonna have to look into FPV kit!
did u build it?
Definitely would love to attempt this. I think some steps are beyond my scope and ability. The software piece seems to have a steep learning curve, and I wouldn't be able to 3D print parts. Really great step by step video with all the details that most others would miss. The cost has always been the biggest deterent to getting into this hobby, but you have reinvigorated my interest. Thank you.
same here, so happy im able to 3D print parts but I will have to learn how to use the software to set it up.
I’m glad the video helped!
I am going to make a betaflight basics video for beginners coming out in a couple weeks so that will helps with any software questions. Keep an eye out for that one!
If you pay for shipping, I would be happy to 3D print and mail you the part you need, just to reduce the number of deterrents!
@@sportagus32 how nice of you and @mason Barr looking forward to it🚀 & good video
I’ve been building quads since 2012 and the software has gotten very complex but quads today fly pretty well on the default settings, which means you don’t have to mess with all its features and fine tuning potentials right away. I still fly some of my old quads from six plus years ago. Keeping up with the latest and greatest isn’t necessary to have fun and it gets expensive. There is a wealth of tutorial information on CZcams, give it a go! You won’t regret it!
20:57 alone was worth my time spent watching this video. Man, what a nice little life-hack that was! Awesome video. I dig the choice of parts and most specially appreciate the well edited, well shot tutorial that ought to be a great way to encourage new people to join this awesome hobby. Thanks for the hard work!
Thanks! I have an "FPV tips tricks and tools" video coming out in a few days where I cover that dental floss trick as well as a couple other things that have helped me when building FPV drones 👍. Thanks for watching!
@@TRONCATFPV I'm here for it! #subbed

@@TRONCATFPV How do you get the drone into beta flight? Is it necessary to take it in the beta flight.
Looking at all the methods and tricks he used you can tell he is skilled
Very nice video - I just got a Mavic Mini 2 that I'm getting familiar with and working on my part 107, but I'm inspired to build my own. Thanks a lot for the well-done video. :-)
I’m going to build my own fpv in the new year so appreciate this video
Excellent video, very cool man! Something I would suggest for your smaller wiring considering the PCB terminals have the holes in the board is strip and tin the small wires then stick them into the terminal holes on the under side then proceed to solder them on the top on the board it'll give you a stronger mechanical connection and help tidy up the board as well! Looks great otherwise!
Thanks for the suggestion!
I concur
Those are not holes for wires. Those are heat sinking vias. Those jokes are not meant for wires to be inserted. The edges of the board use castellations for the wire to be placed in.
Yeah that’s a good shout out. I haven’t done any soldering in quite a long time since I was in school, but I remember using a soldering iron through circuit board holes was much more efficient as it keeps it more tidy and means the connection is generally stronger, even if the cable has to bend closer to the connection point if you are wanting it to lie down flat.
Thanks a lot, took me a couple months but i have a fully functional 5' quad!
This guide helped me a lot, but couldn't build it with this video only. There are some missing parts
Wow Great job, You are one kind of a guy, Couldn't wait till the end to see you fly it, well done...
Great video and realy apreciate the background music and the levels of sound
Hey man great video! I’m building my first drone and using this as a reference. I know nothing about drones for building them, or configuring or flying them lol. I hope I learn a lot along the way. So far I have the frame, motors, and props
I’m glad this video can help ya along the way! If you have any questions along the way please don’t hesitate to reach out!
Damn it brother you have some serious drone skills. You fly that new drone like if u had it for years. Mad respects to the end of ur video you flying that drone at the end is bad ass 💯💯🙏🙏
Thank ya! 🙌🙌
Done subscribed, amazing video. ( Haven’t build it but sat through and watched ever part of it)
Thanks! I enjoyed the video and definitely picked up a few new things for myself.
Algorithm hit the drone community today I guess, lol.
Thanks for making a comprehensive guide as opposed to just showing off a parts list like most people, this is sure to get the new ones excited.
Pro tip for making your solder look perfect every time. Always use flux! Even when using flux core solder it help's immensely to flux up the pads and wire tips before soldering and makes the solder joints look uniform and flat.
Since making this video I’ve started using flux more and it does make a difference. Thanks for the tip!
Yup, flux is your best friend when soldering RC electronics! I prefer the paste as it's much easier to apply a precise amount.
Also, clean that soldering iron tip. My goodness, my OCD kicked in and that is all I saw when the soldering was going on!! LOL!😮
@@dcampbell8779 That’s exactly what I was thinking. You can buy enough tip thinner to last half a lifetime for $10.
In my experience a properly cleaned and tinned tip does WAY more for the quality of solder joints than using extra flux with flux cored solder.
If you use very very good quality solder often it's not needed to use flux ... when I use cheap solder(Even with flux core because they're not all created equal) I use my flux pen all the time.
Thanks for the in depth video! Keep up the great content!
Jus found your chanell and decided to build this drone . Thank you for the video ,and subscribed of course
Nice build. I‘m running 2205 2300 kv Xing motors in a 4 inch Apex 6S configuration. Way lighter and quieter than a 5 inch. Lots of fun, too. Cheers
What's your flight time with those motors?
@@0oo033 Between ~3 and ~7 minutes depending on battery size (550 - 700 mah) and flight style (ripping like crazy - lazy cruising). Very often a bit below 3 minutes and very rarely close to 7 XD
I run them on blheli 32 ESCs (Mamba F722 mini mk3).
Cheers
@@intensegamer7559 ok thanks!
Just found your channel. As an old electronics designer, i'd love to get into this.
The only thing you gloss over without much detail is the programming and setup config. Seems to me that that is the bit where you need to understand what and why...
The physical build looks just like a model kit build, where everything naturally goes together quite easily (assuming you can solder and use a screwdriver).
You see, i'd have just unsoldered the wires to get the motors to run the right direction....
Nice vid. Subscribed 👍🏻🇬🇧
Yep....got me all confused in that section 😅
The flips are very aggressive 😳 and it is pulsing like a dragon fly. Nice build
oh my gosh finaly i see a video of a guy making a cheap fpv racing drone without every link being not working! thank you
21:00 damn that dental floss technique is GENIUS!
Wow! Many many thanks for putting this video together man, very good breakdown to get started, I was sitting on parts I ordered, this should get me where I'm going!
Still working on that frustrating acro nightmare on sim and meteor75, hope it is possible to learn that dark art and get to fly decent eventually, feeling so lame, my 9y old son seems to pick it up faster than I am ;-( :-)
Haha you'll get there! Hope this video is able to help ya get yours together! 🤙
One recomendation for soldering the wires is using flux on the pcb so you can keep it a bit cleaner, but you doing a grat job.
I really appreciate this vid. Seemed like most these things were in stock and you had a back up list which is why I did this one. Used your links for all my purchases. Hope it helps if only a little!
Thank ya! Using the affiliate links always helps 🙏🙏🙏
Glad the video has helped!
Just one comment: you've got two antenna's on the rxsr for diversity reception. You should have put one on either side of the central stack, instead of on just one arm together :D Otherwise, excellent build. Great editing, and easy to follow.
Wow, thank you for this! Really appreciate a more or less “idiot-proof” video instruction and full parts list! Liked and subbed!
Thanks 🙌🙌 glad the video helped!
Amazingly thorough video. This is exactly what I was looking for!
Awesome, i'm glad it helped!
Wow this is so awesome! You seriously crushed it! I would love to be able to do this!
necro maybe, but you might design and print some landing buffers out of TPU for softer landings in case you cut power a few inches above the pavement. You could also try printing TPU pads for reinforcing / protecting other bits on impacts/crashes.
We ended up printing tons of parts for this build. Theres so much stuff out there for the apex frame that fit this one 👍
Here's how to solder: when removing insulation you want the wires to keep their braided, always remove more insulation than you need (account for the longer lead) use flux on the lead, making sure it penetrates the strands then tin leaving a bright silvery lead, if it's full or hazy the bond won't be complete. Then clip the lead to length, keeping the strands braided and brush flux and residue with isopropyl. When prepping the pads, use plenty of flux (another trick is to wipe the solder strand with alcohol, it cleans and residue and dirt?)
You don't want a gob of solder, just a light tin, use flux and attach lead, you should have a nice even filet around the lead boding to the pad, you should barely be able to see the wire strands, if you can't you applied to much solder. Wipe with isopropyl and spray with electronic surface cleaner.
The pull type wire strippers are better than the twist pull types for cleaner insulation cuts and keeps wire strands intact without fraying at the top. The wire needs to be intact and not frayed or hand twisted, keep the original form for better contact distribution.
Once you lay down the wire to the pad, you want to do it in one go, so use the right tip and make sure it's clean and lightly tinned with solder.
I feel like I should mention this is a good comment, but also some solders especially some unleaded ones do leave a dull non shiny finish but have a good connection, something to keep in mind, and if they do add too much solder to a joint, as long as it’s a good connection and it isn’t interfering with anything then just leave it be and learn to use less next time :)
@@DoktrDub my eyes was bleeding while he was soldering too

It could be inflation, but often when video reviews are done. The item gets popular and prices go up. Blame the person who did the video or you the viewers that went out and bought it.
Thanks for the video
I never knew these things were so modular and easy to build, I'm sold.
Question is what is the price for an entry level controller that doesn't feel jank?

I love DJI products. I have 2 FPVs and 2 normal drones but I find this video interesting. I probably might want to do this as well--Knowing how to put a drone together is fascinating. I love to learn. Thank you so much for sharing this video. 👏🏻👏🏻
I wont buy DJI anymore , had a Mavic Air , and eventually all 3 batts swelled up. Replacement of those would be $450 if you can even find them. I'm done with DJI, they lost my business.
@@scottr3141 I would just look into insurance on an expensive drone. I have a Mavix 3 coming in and already got a quote $60 a year which is not bad at all.
I was considering buying the Emax Tinyhawk II Freestyle as my first drone, but I would definitely prefer to build my own as I already have the tools.
You think something like this would be nicer?
I think starting off you would probably be best with the tinyhawk. If you get the package with the controller and goggles you can use those goggles with any analog drones you get in the future. Also, the tinyhawk is relatively durable and is actually alot of fun for its size. I would recommend going with the tinyhawk then eventually upgrading to a simple build like this. Hope this helps!
I started off with the Tinyhawk II and I'd recommend that to all pilots new to FPV. It's super durable and can be flown inside which is a ton of fun!
The emax eco ii motors are a good low budget choice. I dont recommend flying around cars for maiden, never know when things could go wrong after fresh build.
Agreed! I just added the eco ii motors to the description! This wasn't the drones maiden flight, we flew it in a park beforehand. This flight is after making sure everything was working good. Thanks for watching!
Bigger motor = higher ESC specs.
@@The1188am so the recommended esc wouldnt work with the upgraded motor?
@@mr.animegod_yt it would, the mamba esc in this video should be able to handle emax eco ii just fine
Kool build man. I had never watched anyone build a drone. I found it very interesting. Around bend Oregon out !
Wicked! Love it man. I need to build one badly. Thanks
Hey thanks for the wonderful upload.
Couple questions.
Instead of the 20x20mm flight control and the 20x20 vtx… could I just use a 30x30 flight controller and 30x30vtx? Or a 30x30 flight controller with a 20x20 vtx? Hopefully I’m making sense with my questionslol
Also, the Mount for the fpv cam, was that also 3d printed? Could you provide the specs that please?
Absolutely! Only reason I went with 20x20 was because of the quality of the stack and the price that I was able to get it for. the 30x30 stacks are typically more expensive. you could definitely do a 30x30 FC and 30x30 VTX as long as you can mount it on top of the FC. the rear holes on this specific frame are 20x20.
So the camera that I went with is a nano. it came with an adapter for nano to micro but the frame I'm using holds a mini camera. so basically I have two brackets on there holding it on lol. the bracket that came with the camera and one that is 3d printed. I just posted a link to the adapter I used in the description (www.thingiverse.com/thing:4070488).
Hope this helps!
@@TRONCATFPV nice! Thank you for that link!
So I can use a 30x30 fc with a 20x20 vtx as long as the vtx is mounted at the bottom?

Looks really cool. I’ll definitely have to consider making a kit drone someday soon. I love the look of a DJI Mavic or FPV drone but they are still way too expensive for me to ever afford right now so this could be a good halfway step. Thanks for including how you set up the programming for the drone. I’ve never done anything like this before though, so how do you actually put the programming into the drone? Also how do you sync it up with a remote control and what are the best controllers price wise that are good for this type of drone?
