Btw, as a Chinese person myself: Jian (剑) literally translates to sword but the main definition means double edged sword, whereas with dao (刀), which literally translates to knife, the main definition means single edged sword. That’s why the single edged sword in China is often called dadao (大刀), which literally translates to big (大) knife (刀).

@@bigolbearthejammydodger6527 Not in China because dao is literally defined as being single edge where length isn't really a legal factor, whereas the messer, I believe, is more defined by the handle construction. I'd say the more comparable legal situation to the messer and knife guilds would be how "short barrel rifles" are defined in the NFA as having stocks in modern USA, so if you have a sub-16" barrel AR-15 with just the buffer tube, it's legally a pistol (not regulated by the NFA) rather than a short-barrel rifle (regulated by the NFA). That's also why the whole pistol brace thing is in legal limbo right now.

A Katana is not double edged. It never will be, never can be . Putting a Katana grip and Tsuba on a double edged long sword tang does not make it a Katana nor anything equivalent to it. What Tyranth made was an abomination as he said it was , it isn’t built to last. In fact the pin to hold the long sword tang in the Katana grip was achieved only by a metal pin and glue to keep the handle on the tang. Yes the “original “ sword looks interesting, it’s fiction. Functional or not, it’s fiction. And I honestly don’t like the way a double edged blade looks with a Tsuba ( Japanese Sword guard) , and a Japanese Sword hilt looks. But that’s my personal opinion. It doesn’t matter what my opinion is. If it works, it works.

I think one of my favorite parts about how things have evolved since Nate and Tyranth joined the team is just how much the three of you guys bicker with each other. It genuinely feels like a group of friends goofing off and I love it.

I just have to say that I've really enjoyed this series on swapping out parts of swords. It's been highly educational.
I can imagine if guns weren't invented, there'd be Bubba Swordsmiths doing this kind of stuff like Bubba Gunsmiths already do now with guns (alongside Bubba's Pakistani cousin Ali Bubba if you look at some of the weird shit from Khyber Pass. Lotta AR/AK hybrids there).
Yeah , it educational. But there’s a reason why European and Asian sword parts were not intermixed with each other. They aren’t designed to work in tandem. Although it looks interesting. Maybe it could work, maybe it does. I just prefer to keep my swords Authentic and original to the ethnic background it was made in.
@@makisonoda7925 Well yeah, obviously there will be cultural differences as to why certain designs and styles came up. One thing I find fascinating is the Americans developed quick draw techniques for handguns for the same reason the Japanese developed iaijutsu. Despite the two being very different cultures, they both came up with very similar concepts for very similar reasons, to the point where there's a lot of cross-pollination between Westerns and Jidaigeki movies. That's why I always wonder if the Europeans had their own quickdraw techniques. I'd figure if two very different cultures came up with the same thing for the same reasons, then the Europeans also should've done it for their swords.
As it stands, the main reason why the katana is still my favorite sword despite me thinking the longsword is better once the swords are already drawn (kenjutsu in Japanese swordsmanship) is the katana is much more developed for draw techniques, and as an American (who lives in Texas, no less), I very much place a high degree of importance on quick draw, both for practical reasons and because it's really cool.
Still, there probably could be ways to combine the two, much like how there are some professionally done hybrids of the AK/AR. The Sig 556 is a gun that's very much based mechnically on the AK, but incorporates a lot of AR ergonomics.

@@WJS774 depends on the handle, the tang, and the weight of the sword. the sword in the video weighed as much as a sword of comparable length with a pommel. maybe the original sword was much heavier despite being thinner, or maybe the weight of the pommel it had weighed less than you think.
@@jamoecw Are you for real? You think that the overall weight is what the pommel is about? The total weight of the sword means _nothing._ The pommel is to control the point of balance. And it makes a big difference whether you want to admit it or not.
I still believe that, this sword in particular it's not an abomination, it actually resembles a little bit to a Japanese ancient sword called tsurugi, this swords were actually double edged and iirc, were inspired by Chinese jian, so if you ask me...I'd say with a little tweaking on the hilt (like making it more centered) would make a good or at least decent sword design!

Over here we have recycling centers here and there, wich can have some amazing stuff, and if you get friendly with the owner/workers and perhaps throw in some compensation, I would imagine load of useful fun stuff could turn up over time, both wood and metal.
I miss being able to work with metals and Mills and stuff.

Unless it's a metal scabbard, I don't see it. Scabbards were usually wood, lined with fur and covered in leather and obviously hollow on the inside. The wood is very thin such that you might break it if you sit on it accidentally, so I don't see it doing a good job.
Watching the balance of revulsion and admiration in the boys is heartwarming.
Also, they should commission a purpose made version of the longtana, so it doesn't have the brass pin/epoxy issue

The next abomination, orientate the cross guard to be perpendicular to the blade at 90*. It sounds like a horror project.
You'll have to invent a completely new construction of the cross guard for that, or just cut quillons off and weld them back the other way

Back 8 to 10 years euro hilts were much easier to come by now it is harder.
I guess dark wood armory and the Australian medieval fight club are still around, but independent forges are more expensive and cast steel crossguards for the Hanwei Tinker line are not made anymore.

Incidentally, the jian is typically used with mostly one hand 😂
The typical jian also has both a shorter hilt and blade, and is also lighter by a bit. .7-.9 kilos instead of 1.2 kilos. Also, they typically had a pommel, and a different hand guard. Apples to banana/orange hybrid.

I'd suggest centering the blade and adding a bigger tsuba. It would deal with the foward balancing and add more hand protection.
3:08 Sir Shad, you got it right on the first try. Jian is what we call double edged blade in Chinese. And this particular design with 8 surfaces (or whatever the proper term) is an design from the Bronze Age. Hence the Jian is smaller because blade made of bronze cannot go too long or to large.
If you're going to try and make a more specific fusion of the Katana and Longsword, I'd suggest checking out the Ask Seki Sensi video where he actually tries some things with a trainer longsword. Just for the feedback from the Katana side of things.
Off the top of my head, I would suggest trying to machine a mix between the cross guard and a tsuba, likely with a single quillion along the 'true' edge, a rounded central section in the style of a tsuba, but with a notch to accomidate moving to thumb-grip. I think that manages to adjust the guard for the benefits both camps have prefered while also addressing some of potential problems.
Shad is getting better at this, which is a testament of how much one can improve by actually using swords and reflecting on the usage afterwards.
I have cut with katana with back-edge techniques like zwerchau and schielhau by temporarily reversing the blade and holding down on the grip while placing the thumb on the grip instead of thumbing the flat of the blade. It works. Slightly awkward but Shad is correct here that on a well balanced nimble sword like many longswords, temporarily having 1 inch point of balance further away may help the cut gain more momentum thus letting the mass of the sword doing more work for you. When you are done with the cut, you immediately hold back onto the the part just below the guard to gain more control. It works with a tip heavy sword like katana, it definitely works with a nimbler blade like the longsword blade (more profile taper and more distal taper).

@@lexmarovsky6667Not sure about Chinese swords, but I think the reason why Japanese swords had the small tsuba was so it’d get caught less on stuff during a speed draw (iaijutsu). I know when Seki Sensei tried out the longsword, it got caught on stuff a few times despite him praising the extra hand protection. As far as I know, there’s no equivalent to iaijutsu for European swords.
Much the same way a lot of handguns modified for quick draw will have all their edges smoothed out for the sake of a faster and smoother draw. Sometimes they’d go so far as to remove the front sight entirely, making it far less accurate at long range but a much smoother draw since nothing would snag.

I more imagine that once the "I don't wanna cut my own hand while stabbing" bit was figured out, they were satisfied and didn't think twice about it.

@@1stCallipostle Well there are still reasons why they went with some particular design, and even the Japanese did modify the nodachi and tachi into the eventual katanas in later periods when there were more sword carrying on foot and swordsmanship became more self defense oriented than battle.

Right now i have that image in my head of Shad, Tyranth and the rest of the crew going to a toy store and pretty much cleaning out their stack of pool noodles for sword testing.
But the sword has something weirdly fascinating about it. I would like to see it with other kinds of tsuba designs, like more rectengular ones. Those exist, after all.
This mixing of sword hilts and blades seems to be worthwhile from both a looks and an efficient use aspect.
Day something of asking for a video on the misconceptions of Medieval weddings. Such as the engagement (even though I know it was done by the parents), What they did to celebrate, and any interest information.
I then what to know how these can be incorporated into fantasy stories and TTRPGs. Especially since I recently read my fantasy book where I do touch on marriage a bit.
These being a Royal wedding set up, the mention of a marriage, and an actual interrupted wedding scene.
Another thing I want to know is what actually happened to a princess of a kingdom if thar kingdom was taken. Because in my story the main character is forced into marrying the main bad guy. I don’t actually know how accurate that actually is to history though
It seems to me that the wielder's affinity for strength, speed, defense, or balance pairs better with the handle than the blade. The tsuka of a katana is advantageous in deft hands to allow more fluidity of motion than a hilt with a crossguard, allowing them to strike rapidly (much like Tyranth shows). A strong wielder would prefer the opposite, using a blade's crossguard with a strong grip to brace against an attack then following up with leverage to affect an opponent's balance. Very good show of skills, gentlemen!
Nah, the type of guard has little if anything to do with how fast or fluidly you can move the sword. That has more to do with weight, balance, strength and skill of the user.
I love to think that at some point in the future Nate will have an 80’s style flash back and a faded shad will echo softly in his ears “feel the blade”

i think Lon(g)ken would be pretty fitting as a name. Long is obvious, "ken" basically means "sword" in japanese and is the go to designation when talking about double edged swords in Japan. Also the pronounciation is pretty smooth/neat imo. Idk if i'd write it with or without "g", but if it's with, i'd still keep it silent.
I like the Ken part for sword. But we need a new beginning. Something to mean long, but hopefully something that pairs good with the Ken part of the name.

'Ken' literally means double edged sword in japanese, whereas '-tō' or katana means single edged (tō, katana, '-nata' or 'waki-' are all readings of 刀 character) possibly knife like in chinese.
So ken is sword but katana are 'knives' in a sense.

I think the real takeaway from these experiments is that there's a reason for there being so many styles, and sizes of swords is to cater to personal preference!

The Hanwei Tinker swords came out around the early 2010s sometimes they snapped at the "shoulders" a possibility they were actually afraid.
Although newer blades tend to break less.

Loved this video and I’m honestly with shad on this. I do wonder if this particular unique sword’s asymmetrical blade may offer different reverse edge cut feelings depending on which side you use in the reverse. I also fully agree with building a sword with a katana styled handle built into a longsword blade profile like this.
I think this raises an overall question of, "What happens if you could add the optimal handle (for the user) to a blade?"
Finding this sword very fascinating. I'd come up the same concept (a light, fast longsword blade with tachi tsuba) as the weapon for a DnD Monk Kensai character a few months ago. I thought it was just a completely rule of cool fantasy idea, but it seems to performs way better than I thought it would.

Double bladed long sword blade: ookatana handle + POMMEL, and a Tsuba/cross guard HYBRID (Don't know if something like that already exists).
Katana wraps + pins and try to incorporate the endurance of the longsword handle into the handle.
Edit: ok, sorry, you guys talked about it at the end, more or less, so, YEAH, if you do this, oh boy, happy fan be happy and more fan.
The longtana looks to be overall better when compared to the longsword. It's got a faster tip and better reach with the longer handle. Even longer when wielded one-handed (looking at you, Shad).
The addition of a crossguard (but not a pommel, sorry Skal) would be nice, but given the other benefits of speed and reach I don't think your hand is at as much risk overall. So that detriment seems like more of a wash.

Your sword measurements should include the point of balance and the largest moment of inertia about that point. Those would be easy measurements and they'd largely capture what you mean about handling characteristics.
Don't know. I really like the look and, from what you guys have said, the feel of both. The falchion kimitana looks like a more _reliable_ sword, in that it has the better cross-guard and a good balance. The langana looks fun and a bit like a _glass cannon_ without the better guard, but being superior in seemingly any other way.

If you're already making abominations, why not make a tsuba, that is a bit bigger then normal tsuba's, with openings so you can finger or thumb the blade but still retain the classic look of the katana hilt? (on a long sword or katana)

Second time now. This reminds me and looks the way a lightsaber is being portrayed being used. Sort that handle out a little better and its a weapon that acts a lot like the way light sabers are portrayed. This is a Proto Saber.

The advantages of the longer ha'dle reminds me of a very cool weapon that in french we call "la coutille". It's basicly a one handed sword on a stick to make it the coolest spear you can find. I love it and I'd love to see you test one

Funny how European swords neighbour middle eastern swords are like Katana long swords while Japans neighbour China has Katana like swords. Little bit of history rhyming there.
Ignoring the wording issues here
The reason Japan and China have similair swords is because they basically stole the design from each other.
China had curved swords, Japan took the concept and ran with it.
Then some Japanese pirates lose their blades to some Chinese who basically 1 for 1 copied a Tachi into the Wo Dao, which is quite literally named Japanese Sword in context

Ship it to Finland, I have a perfect burial place for that abomination on top of ancient fell in middle of nowhere. All that needs to be done is to drill a hole in a sacred square rock, put the sword in and fill the edges of the hole with pebble cement to prevent people from pulling it off the rock. Other option would a small remote waterfall in Northern Norway that has been used as a sacrificial site by local indigenous people in middle ages, the rock altar in there is still bit rusted from all the blood :D
