To those of you questioning this scene, it is actually very realistic for a child not to know their heritage especially if it isn't exemplified around them. I had no idea what I was until around the age of 8/9.

You’ll be surprised how many Hispanics I’ve met that are genuinely ashamed of their culture. I recently worked with a Mexican girl and I needed someone to help translate for a client. She flat out lied to me, said she didn’t speak any Spanish. I later found out she was fluent but she was ashamed of her background. I have a hard time understanding why someone would deny their culture. I would be proud to be fluent in more than one language. Obviously this TV show is comedy, but really not far from reality.
Because a lot of the time people like her (and me) get called out by other Mexicans for not being Mexican enough. I’ll rather hangout with someone who doesn’t define me by culture or background. A lot of Mexicans seem to not grasp the concept that you don’t have to act like the stereotype. My friends from childhood are Mexican and my friends from college are also Mexican. The differences, my friends from home embrace the stereotype and try to shame me for listing to alternative rock. While my friends from college, race and culture is never an issue
Yea but maybe it’s because of the times we r in right now. People r scapegoating immigrants right now and it’s a shame. It is something to be proud of. Immigrants work hard and only want better lives for their families. I don’t understand how anyone can shamelessly demonize that.
I'm Mexican and I've lived all my life here, and what I can say it's a term called 'malinchismo' that means betraying your culture and people. It's a very complicated thing, because on occasions we really are proud of who we are, but in the bad times we just wish to be born in a different country. Mexico isn't great at all, many people suffer and the ones who immigrate just try to forget their past because it's full of pain, by the pass of the time, we realize that we're kind of unique, but it's a long way to go.
It's funny how the Eva Longoria's character is accused of being ashamed for her ancestry. In reality, the actress hold a Master's Degree in Chicano studies.
So, Im willing to bet that she glad she doesn’t look like an Indian. Reminds me of those light skin Latinas talking shit about native looking Mexicans.

I’m on her side. Everyone loves to talk about POC families being “denied generational wealth” and such, but when they actually achieve it, well, you saw what he said to her.
He called her a self hating Mexican because she is. Denying your children knowledge of their culture and language, referring to other Mexicans as “those people” and her own child’s perception of Mexicans as just poor people selling oranges on the side of the rode proves that. You can be wealthy without shitting on where you came from. That’s the problem.
Exactly... I actually think that, it's racist to tell someone that they must act a certain way or live a certain lifestyle because of their race....because people are more than a race....we're all individuals and we should never be limited because of our ethnicity.
setheurovision94 it’s ridiculous for a father to want his daughter to go to a bad public school an hour away just because it’s a school where white people aren’t.
I just started watching Desperate Housewives on HULU. I saw one episode and was like “Damn it ...now I’m hooked. “ I just saw this scene the other night and almost fell off the couch. 😂😂 Juanita looks so confused. “...I’m Mexican??!” 😟 Such a funny little kid. It’s crazy how long ago this was. She’s all grown up now. So many great actors and actresses on the show.
Honestly, Gaby wants her daughter at the best school. And Carlos says that he wants Juanita to go to a public school one hour away just because there’s Hispanic people out there, even though it’s a bad school. Do what’s best for your child, not to win an argument about a shady shallow sense of heritage.
I read this, just as the scene came up, and you do have a good point. To add to your point, I don't like Carlos in this scenario. Shortly after the public school thing, he starts pinning all of their "lack of heritage" on Gaby. You know there are 2 parents in this household right? Gaby cannot be the only one at fault for their children not knowing their heritage from birth.
I agree. It's better for her future if she goes to the private school. Heritage is important but if Carlos is that worried about it, all he has to do is bring her to Mexico every year to keep her connected to their roots. Is not rocket science. Carlos just wants someone to blame.
They can still make her go to a better school later. I was really happy to go to school both in Cameroon and in France it changed my point of view for a long time.
It was never implied that Carlos wanted to sent her off to a "bad school", you came up with that. He just wanted to sent her off to a school with more hispanic people so their daughter wouldn't feel alienated.
Gabi Solis is a self-hating Mexican however this session was interesting showing the diversity among Mexicans. Carlos was born in Mexico but Gabi was a Mexican from Texas,a Tejana so Mexicans who have been living in Texas for generations, a lot of them don't even speak Spanish. Im not implying Tejanos are self hating no Im just saying they are more different from Mexican-Americans like Carlos whose ancestors really came from Mejico
Technically she’s not even Mexican... the Spaniards had a grip hold of Texas for more than a century while being was part of Mexico for only 10 years before it became an independent nation, which was later acquired by the United States. Even Longorias family can trace their ancestry to Texas since the 1600’s

My mother was like this, she embraced everything white and shunned all her Puerto Rican family and heritage. My brother and I are actually half White and know no Spanish and just don't do anything with our Puerto Rican halves. It causes a lot of confusion when your parents raise you mostly with white culture. Not just from strangers but from family, where they may feel ashamed because you don't understand Spanish. i grew up like this but my mom was peruvian. i ended up hating her side of the family growing up bc they never treated me like family. i never connected with any of them.
I like that they're addressing a huge problem in American society : behind communities lies social segregation. If you're rich you're most likely white, or you're living among white people. Gaby doesn't even consider living in a rich Mexican neighborhood, because there's no such thing or it's so rare it's not even considered. Everyone in Wisteria Lane is white except for the Solis, there's no Asians, there's only one black family in one season, etc. Gaby, by rejecting being poor (and the poor in general) is also rejecting her own origins, she doesn't even question that. It's just normal to her.
Actually if your rich you are most likely Asian as they are the richest group in America. And why is it that black people can live together, Asians can live together but as soon as it's a white neighbourhood it has to be questioned? Like how are we allowing whites to live with who they want to ? They shouldn't have the same privilege as everyone else of getting to live with their own people if they wish to. She wudn't be able to show her talent if she was where we live. Her role itself will never get any variety or development. I loved Bree even though hers was very unhealthy kind of behavior. She was just acting. Wow..I loved that series.
2:50 You know a script was written by a WASP when Mexican(!) characters pretend there are no white people in Mexico. There are, and they are super duper privileged. “So we are like those people who sell oranges on the side of the road?” - it wasn’t a race thing, it was a class thing. Juanita basically thinks rich people can’t be immigrants. And I doubt she was pretending to be white, she was just thinking of herself solely as an American. Americans are not only the white ones, you know.
Yeah, class is definitely the larger factor. Plus, it shouldn’t have to be a problem if she views herself as American first. I mean, she is American. It’s hard for some people to identify with and participate in both cultures. I know I struggled with it a little bit when I was 10 or 11 years old. I have some cousins that weren’t able to reconcile the two cultures, and they are some of the whitest people ever, but that doesn’t make them any less ethnically Mexican.
Well if she was born and raised in the US, that would make her.... American. Not Mexican. She just has Mexican heritage. It's like Americans who say they're Irish but they've never set foot in Ireland, probably don't know too much about the culture, but their ancestors emigrated from there.
@@danivasquez1984 At least those people are actually ethnically Irish, which means they are Irish by blood and heritage, even if they're not nationally Irish because they were born somewhere else. A lot of Americans who call themselves Mexican aren't even ethnically Mexican. They're just tan white people of Spanish descent a lot of times (not always, some of them are actually ethnically Mexican, because they're Native American. But many are white, or black, Asian, etc. Or they can be mixed). That's why a lot of Hispanics/Latinos are counted as white (or whatever race they actually are) in the US census.

She wudn't be able to show her talent if she was where we live. Her role itself will never get any variety or development. I loved Bree even though hers was very unhealthy kind of behavior. She was just acting. Wow..I loved that series.
gaby and carlos are PERFECT couple
Gaby: You do know you’re a girl right?
Carlos: Gaby!
Gaby: What? Half the women in your family have moustaches, it can be very confusing.
😂😂😂😂😂
Probably one of the funniest scenes on the show
Omg I couldn't stop laughing! This is gold 😂
lol I just love how Gaby handles with embarrassed scenes
*Nervously drinks the other glass*
"Huh?"
3:23
That was exquisite delivering
I'm Mexican but not offended by this since most ethnicities are told they should somehow be ashamed of their heritage including the Irish
starbucksghost I'm latina too and it is funny. ❤️
Maybe it's a Catholic thing 😂
This little girl was a good actress 😂
She should've kept acting! She could've really gone places
Wish they had a spin-off just them. All the murder was exhausting. I only watched the show for them
“Half the women in your family have mustaches it can be very confusing”
LMAO.....
No. Demi Lovato's mom is English. Her father is Italian, Irish and Mexican. So she's not half Mexican. She's like 25% or less.
سيندي تارين waw she looks mexican
her dad was fully mexican, with spanish + native american ancestors. she posted a DNA test on it once.
@@lunalove9395 this was 7 years ago

When I found out I was German and Irish, I told my teachers that I was part Leprechaun and part German Shepard.
That moustache line was so hilarious! I love Gaby!
Children teaching us a bright lesson here... Too bad most of adults won't think because they are so formated
Ahahahah how can I not know I'm Persian in the middle of Catholic school lol
It happens. A white skinned Asian doesn't even think she is non white in a school with black kids and Indians.
I freaking love this scene
HAHAHAH Juanita “I am Mexican...? 👀”
Gaby:I don’t even no what that means!. Mom:just say it!! Gaby:adios senor!
I miss this series!
To be fair, a lot of "Mexican"-Americans think that Mexicans can't be white. That's why you hear them say, "You're Mexican? YoU dOn'T LoOk MeXiCaN."
@@mynameisreallycool1 ethnically mexican?Wait what? 🙄im very ligth colored yet im mexican, mexican ethnicity does not exist since our country is barely 200 years old
Love desesperate housewives ❤️🥺since 2006 ❤️
Ah! So this is what they call a "Mexican Sitdown"... 😂
What!? I knew of Mexican Standoff's but this was something new!
You all forgot ze lunchbox
1:27 so we’re like those people who sell oranges 🍊 on the side of the road Lol 😂
You know damn well that Gaby had been complaining about that, either to Juanita or while Juanita was within earshot
"I'm Mexican?"🤣😂😂

Loool I'm going to start watching this again
The writers on this show were awesome 😂
''Adios Senor''🤣
😂 I laughed so hard🤣‼️
It is true that racism is learned. And now Juanita is about to be taught to be a racist and they're gonna teach her that she's different from everybody else.
I guess your damn right.
Learning about your race/heritage isn’t going to make you racist.
@@WEwalked Exactly what a racist would say.
@@WEwalkedThat person is an obvious troll based on their comments and username
lmao its funny how they see all the white ppl :D
rodo419 Yeah without considering that Mexico and Latin America have plenty of whites.
@@Vylkeer but these weren't Mexican whites, they were American whites
