  • In this episode we have a IC-7000 with a badly burned out driver board. Additional to that we have to fight with crappy ribbon-cable

    Very Nice, I just repaired a 7000 that someone had accidentally applied power to it in reverse polarity. The radio was a bit of a mess but it made a full recovery. I had the exact same issue with the ribbon cables. I had only one contact fold over on me. I was lucky that I was able to re-insert it without folding the contact over again.

    I just recently open one up and found that it had the latest pcb last digit been a letter (D)board installed . But what found was that it didn’t have that silicon heat paste on it so it was applied. Good video overall TRX !

    I had this problem with my IC7000. The replacement driver board was cheaper than replacing the the burned out FET! I was surprised that no heat sink paste was used between the driver module and the chassis when it was manufactured. No problems since this repair. Steve G4EDG

    Way to go Peter! The folks who design the electronics and mechanics of these radios I bet never have to repair them! Obviously packaging is a difficult thing to do but the ergonomics for disassembly and repair always seem to be considered only secondarily. 73 - Dino KL0S

    • @TRXLab
      @TRXLab  Před 8 lety

      +Dino Papas Hi Dino, yes absolutely agree very often the design department does not have an idea what's going on in the service and after market department. From marketing point of view that is stupid as customers much more notice the service behaviour then sales. I personally always make my decisions on any purchase on what the service reputation is like..

    Good News USA - the newest Icom IC504 Driver Board is available from ICOM for nominal cost. I haven't had a need yet but ya never know so I ordered a few. Beats the heck out of trying to be a hero by rebuilding a burnt board IMHO. Plus ... you get the latest design changes. Ribbon Cables available too.

    As Paul said, Great Job!!! I can understand and be a lot more forgiving towards the average guy doing his own repairs, but for a company to engineer a product with those issues...don't think so! Even I can think of ways to use ribbon cable that would not have presented the problems with that radio. You did an excellent job, though I know you felt like kicking yourself for not replacing the ribbon cables when you had it apart the first time. The previous video of yours that I watched before this one has me concerned about the quality of components. It was a Kenwood 850 I think, and capacitors had leaked out all over the board...and even with your talented cleaning of the board, it was still seriously damaged from the leaking caps. Even old vacuum tube radios from the 30's and 40's had electrolytics that didn't leak that bad or quickly! I would love to visit your shop some day and spend some time sharing stories with you and learning from you. Keep up the excellent work.

    Hello again Peter my friend. Another good repair here, but quite a difficult one it seems. As you mentioned in the video.. The Pre-amp board linking design looks terrible. I would have thought that ICOM could have come up with something better than that idea. I suppose it works though.

    Very nice. I am in amateur radio for many years and have one IC-7000.
    Problem with drivers is a realy shame for such serious company.
    The way to replace it is also a shame for ICOM.
    The radio is exepensive and we paid for first series that had many troubles.
    Thats always the same. So. who takes a first serie is a dummy because after that thay made a many modifications.

    TRX, Your presentations are most enjoyable. Very under-stated style and a wealth of knowledge and methodical troubleshooting.
    Was going to state how much I detest ribbon cables but another poster beat me to the draw. I despise these connectors!
    They have curtailed my amateur radio activities as my Icom 745 has broken and rotted ones and I cannot get any sort of replacements. Why is the production and availability of ribbon cables such a secret? Can't some business provide custom made ones if they have for example, a sample of the original cable or if they know the connector type, pin size etc?
    With the Icom 745, jumper wires may be a sort of solution but where can one get the right size connectors for the individual wires?
    Ideas, anyone?

    In the past, when working on computers with ribbon cable problems it was usually the very end of the cable that would fail. I used to take a pair of sharp scissors and trim off about an inch if the cable allowed for it. It worked every time for me. Would that be possible in an RF circuit?
    When I was looking at the cable in the video, I was beginning to wonder if the cable had been flipped over or even reversed end for end. My hunch is based on the shape of the cable and how it fit once installed.
    As always, I truly enjoy watching your videos. Awesome and Free! Point the complainers to the door. LOL.
    Heck, you don't need my compliments. ...Looks like you get flooded with compliments regularly. As others often say, thanks for sharing your time and your expertise with the world.
    Question: do you have a video, or would you consider making a video that simply gives a tour of the equipment you own and its purpose? I mean all the items on your shelves in the background. Perhaps some items are duplicates, but you have things that I have never seen before.

    • @TRXLab
      @TRXLab  Před 6 lety

      Of course that is a way and it would work. The problem in this radios is that the originally ribbon cables are already that much short that even a short cut would create a problem to get them back into the sockets...73

    • @WaterWhiteTuber
      @WaterWhiteTuber Před 6 lety

      I understand. I also noticed that the cable ends appear to be stripped exposing the wires. Old style PC ribbon cables actually pierce the cable insulation. In this situation, it would be a waste of time unless new cable were completely unavailable. 73

      Those IC-7000 radios have a problem with their fuse holders. If you remove the fuses and clean them really good you can see if your wattage increases. Mine was transmitting ~100 watts on Field Day one year, and after 30 minutes into the contest the power suddenly dropped to ~40-50%.

      +Marko „Orkekum“ Ahonen LOL Yeah you are right Marko I know on, too. Well sometimes it makes no sense to repair a board. Thanks for comment..

    Does any one on here have trouble when turning the memory left bottom control, the display flickers all over the place and if it really bad the relays inside the radio keep chattering, have cleaned the terminals from display unit to radio when you remove the front, there are about 6 gold terminals...cleaned them with switch cleaner...have 2 of these and they both do it...cure is dont use the memory from Fred g4vvq.

      I never had that problem with my IC-7000 but maybe the switch itself is dirty. I don't think it makes a difference but I'm not using the stock microphone. I'm using a Heil Pro-Set Plus! I think mine might have the same problem as the radio in this video. I get about 40-50% power on any band so I'm about to send mine to Icom for repair.

    Junk. We see it here in America too. Under rated connectors and under rated components. Nothing made to make a life long tool.

      @goinghomesomeday1 This radio is just cheap and nasty, its predecessors had 2 drivers with parasitic suppression, this radio doesn't; the cooling is insufficient with a fan half the size of the 706MKIIG, and you can see this if you turn on the temperature display on the front of the radio. A 10-second over on full power is all you can get before the radio is overheating. The driver mount is not smooth, and there is no heat sink grease to bridge the gap between the transistors and the case. In my opinion, if they had put the colour display on the 706MKIIG radio, you would have had a great radio combination, but they didn't and the IC 7000 is a bit of a disappointment.

    Where is this common problem explained? I have a 7000, and I wish to prevent it from having this issue.
