Drop in an elliptic pond

- Evolution of the wave front created by a drop of water in an elliptic container filled with water. The color changes after each collision with the boundary. Guess where the foci of the ellipse are...
This was actually a bit hard to simulate, because of the strong dispersion near the foci. Therefore I had to constantly add new particles where dispersion was too strong. The simulation starts with 2000 particles, while at the end there are 40000 of them.
See • Ripple in an elliptica... for a version made by Teus.

One thing I wonder about these simulations is if the ripple patterns ever repeat, or will they endlessly get more intricate?
Unless you start on a focal point, they will get more intricate. At least for a simulation with infinite resolution.
@@NilsBerglund have you made any videos with the droplet starting at a focal point? I’d watch it.
@@inigocasanovadiaz5927 it'd literally start at one foci, go out, get one bounce from the walls and fall into the second foci, rinse and repeat
@@NilsBerglund How do you know that?
If it works as a straight line in a torus built on the square [0, 1] x [0, 1] (*), it repeats if something is "rational" and the ellipse is also "rational" in some ways. But this is just a guess to be checked (or disproved).
(*) In a torus a straight line of the form y = mx is a closed loop if (and only if) m is a rational number. Fun fact: this is a topological way to characterise rational real numbers.
I would absolutely love to see a model where the waves interact with each other
Waves don't interact with each other. They pass through. In the ocean, they will just briefly combine when they pass through and then later separate without disturbing each other very much.
@@RubyBoopedTheSnoot but if you could see the interference pattern of the waves in this video it’d look more interesting
DUDE check out his new videos he just released one on waves
@@RubyBoopedTheSnoot That is straight BS waves can cancel each other out
@@RubyBoopedTheSnoot do you know nothing of interference patterns? When multiple waves meet they combine and the resulting wave is the average of the original amplitudes at each point along the wavelength, if two waves of equal frequency and amplitude meet they will either combine(increasing the amplitude), cancel out, or interfere
interesting, you can actually see where the foci are as the waves pass through them
Where?
@@herobrine1847 whenever there are circles closing they always close on the foci. Examples at 0:15 and 0:25
Also the circles that form and shrink at 1:14
But are we sure those are the focii? :)
@@waiitwhaat Not entirely sure, but the repeating pattern around those two points makes it seem like they are at least of some significance.
That's the kinda of thing I "see" when my eyes are closed
That’s the kind of thing I see after eating all the colorful candy from the grandpas cabinet
Nah, the phosphenes have a more structured shape. I'd rather say it's like the things you see when you lay on a bed for too long and stand up too quickly.
On acid?
Jesus christ you're right
Don't we all
I need like a 2 hour version of this, with some psychedelic music in the background.
You're welcome to try the code, and produce your own video. Were you thinking of Pink Floyd's "Echoes"?
@@NilsBerglund Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking about!
@@vladimirlenin4080 As the Father of your revolution, you are wrong.
Great gig in the sky would be so much better...
@@karlmarx2590 nah, the whole dark side of the moon would be far better.
How about the "Drink the Sea" album from Glitch Mob?
This is so beautifull and hypnotic
Thanks!
I love how you can see the focal points become more and more clear the longer the simulation runs. In the end, it will probably look like a mess of circles emitting from the focal points
The best part about this...
IT’S SYMMETRICAL!
Yeah xD
Each time it was symetrical i stoped the video and yelled '' SYMETRICAAAAL!! '' XD
Am i the only one?.... Yes?.... Pitty
@@denco37 no your'e not!
İf you investigate it a bit you can see that its symmetrical according to focuses of ellipse. A reason for you to study conic sections
careful! you're pulling it infinitely tight
Haha I was wondering how you achieved such consistent results as the simulation went on. I was like "is he storing the curve of the vectors in some preservative way, rather than simulating particles? The lines aren't getting any noisier!" nope; there are just 20 times more particles after 80 seconds! lol. I love it.
What If the drop starts at one one the focal points?
Excellent question! I"ll let you ponder it until tomorrow...
In this case, all of the waves will pass through the other focal point.
Sorry for spoilers
@@NilsBerglund hahahahaha ponder..
Melon is right, of course, see here: czcams.com/video/-aZ-GiAXh3U/video.html
im wondering if the circles generated on the sides, pause at 0:25, are centered around the focal points
all i can think while seeing this is "be careful not to tear or crease it"
me too LOL
00:15 "you're pinching it infinitely tight"
Ah the wonderful days of youtube
kinda wish it was longer. I could watch this go on for hours on end and dk nothing else lmao
In a cuple days, your gonna be viral because of youtube algorithm
Absolutely mesmerizing
Almost minimalistic compared to some of your other work. It feels friendly and comfortable, nice.
Ikr, my simulations have evolved quite a bit in the last few months. But my code should be backward-compatible, in the sense that I should still be able to generate all the older versions with the current code.
that actually looks so pretty!!
Thanks, glad you like it
Chaging color after a reflection is a good touch!
The mathematics behind this must be terrifying.
POV: You have been blessed by the algorithm.
This is beautiful, i've looked at it for 5 hours now
This was the most complex thing I ever found satisfying.
Absolutely mesmerizing.
Glad you like it! Cheers!
Yo, Nils, we need an extended version of this one!
This channel deserves to be more popular
I love these
i’m pretty sure we can all agree that we saw one of these in our recommended and now we can’t stop
At first it has phase transitions, then it develops, within a few seconds, double phase transition. A transition is brevity of reflection.
Nicely suggested by color change.
There is a node in the center.
*When some of the shapes perfectly mirror each other in sequence
Me: *MAFFS*
I just wanted to see lines moving now I'm being hypnotized. 10/10 experience
me explaining my teammates how things getting more chaotic just because he peeked late for .2 seconds
Waiting for algorithm to recommend to everyone
its recommending~
atleast for me... idk why im here but im pretty glad im here
hm
Yes
Here
I could watch this for hours.
That's so amazing
The new DC logo looking fire 🔥!
Thanks. I hadn't considered this.
love this things vibe . totally trust it
Beautiful
Thank you
I showed this to my teacher and hypnotized her to give me good marks, thanks
we need 10 hours version of this!
Beautiful..The universe is lopsided, that's how complexity.
Graphic designers, take note. This thing made some sick looking logos.
Wow, it's really mindblowing
Mesmerising
this looks like a memetic kill agent
also really cool! i felt focused, my mind was clear of thoughts i just stared at that. very neat
Thanks!
The 5 minute version is literal hypnosis
imagine going to a park like its a normal day and yeeting a pebble into the water and the ripples be like this
Anytime you pause the video is like this is a sick Logo for a Company
thought that said "epileptic pond" and there was about to be like 80 frogs having seizures
No matter where you pause it, it will always be symmetrical
You know what I see? A new way to play Bad Apple
i don’t know why this video is in my recommended but it looks cool
This is the only time I will every make an exception on learning something
is this what being hypnotised feels like
when the physics teacher says "friction is negligible and momentum is conserved"
So cool
Something worth watching atleast
beautiful
Thank you! 😊
"You pinched it infinitely thin!"
Thank you, I was looking for one of these comments
Awesome. Ty. I see sine waves good and bad. Thinking Cymatics
Please make this go longer
Could probably freeze at any point in the vid and have a stellar design for an album cover
This is cool
It’s like there are two parts of the story. And one part is trying to catch up. I can’t wait to see how it unfolds!
One minute into the video I realized it wouldn't collapse into a circle. Life will never be the same.
It actually look 3d at the end, its so cool
nice 4d rotation u got there
I read the title as “drop in an epileptic pond”
I could watch this for hours...
Thanks
It would be cool if to see the waves actually collide with each other
Drop in an epileptic pond:
Flashing lights
Convulsing on the floor
It became an epileptic pond because the ripples started to overwhelm me
SO SATISFING
BRUH U BROKE MY BRAIN
It's so pretty...
Every second of this works as a reticle
I'm gonna save this video for when I'm high. I'll report back with my findings
This is some sick as hell loading screen
I have no clue what this is but it’s cool and I like it
It hurts my brain but I love it
This is beautifyl
Glad you like it!
Imagine the lines as a series of points bouncing back and forth, only interacting with the ellipse around it
That's what it is, you are right.
"Oh this is a cool vid"
1 minute later; **hypnotized**
Thought it said epileptic and thought "the fucking water gonna start shaking when it sees flashing lights?"
If this goes on forever, it'll be chaotic
Intriguing
Imagine if a video game used this as the loading circle
It's like it is constantly telling you where the focal points are
Everybody gangsta till the drop of water make weird shapes
I have doubts, but it looks great.
this is the sort of things that I imagine but only for 5 seconds because I get lost
What standing up feels like
The majestic wobwobs
I wonder what it would look like if it started ~5% to the left or right of center. Quick chaos?
I feel like you can pause on any time and it will make a cool logo
Pretty
this is what they play in cartoon characters eyes to show they're drunk
You should make an hour long version
