Drop in an elliptic pond

  • Evolution of the wave front created by a drop of water in an elliptic container filled with water. The color changes after each collision with the boundary. Guess where the foci of the ellipse are...
This was actually a bit hard to simulate, because of the strong dispersion near the foci. Therefore I had to constantly add new particles where dispersion was too strong. The simulation starts with 2000 particles, while at the end there are 40000 of them.

One thing I wonder about these simulations is if the ripple patterns ever repeat, or will they endlessly get more intricate?

Unless you start on a focal point, they will get more intricate. At least for a simulation with infinite resolution.

If it works as a straight line in a torus built on the square [0, 1] x [0, 1] (*), it repeats if something is "rational" and the ellipse is also "rational" in some ways. But this is just a guess to be checked (or disproved).
(*) In a torus a straight line of the form y = mx is a closed loop if (and only if) m is a rational number. Fun fact: this is a topological way to characterise rational real numbers.
