Zouk is a musical movement born in Guadeloupe (West Indies). The lyrics are in French Creole and despite a happy and festive tone, it's quite sad and speaks of the weight of the daily mental load for women. Zouk is an integral part of French musical culture. Originally, the word Zouk meant the place "Where we could have fun". The absolute masters are the group Kassav who have widely popularized this music on the French European territory.
The lyrics go deeper than this. Actually this is about a woman stuck at home with an abusive man who treats her like her maid and her only escapism is music. She tries to rebel but it doesn't get anywhere, the punishment are harsh so she keeps on singing and dancing
Obviously we don't ear the same lyrics!... The song is more about a better balanced relationship than an abused woman. In the song the woman is threatening to leave if the man isn't changing behavior; it's quite far from what you're saying. By the way, considering French Caribbean family structure, remember it's a matriarcal...
@@BeholderMask Very happy to tell you that i, too, live in the French Caribbean but for the sake of this place being (also) read by English speakers I'll refrain from writing french. While i agree to say the society in the Caribbean is a matriarchal one i find the lyrics " Ou sav ké sé toujou vou ka kontròl. Byen dé fwa, an té vlé, enprovizé é fé on ti boujé. An kaz la, ka rété ka santi mwen kon si an prizonyé. " rather dark. The man keeps the control of the household while the woman, who tries her best to be cook and be emotionally available to him, feels like a prisoner in her own home. It might just be us interpreting that in different ways and i want to make it clear that by responding to you i am not starting a war, just explaining what i get from the tune a lot of us grew up with
@@darksideofthemood Not dark, rather old fashion sentimental disappointment. Couple relationship was never simple. It reminds me a friend from university, White and parisian, telling me the same about her boyfriend ("il m'prend pour sa pute et sa bonniche !"). It was around 96, so same time same problems. So lyrics have to be understood according to the reality of that time. Take on the other hand the lyrics of L'aigle noir from Barbara. The lyrics could appear first soft and poetic poetic. But it was her way speaking about being raped by her father while a child... Still we should both agree on the pleasure of listening to meaningful lyrics that it is in creole, french or english.

This is the song you can't miss in a party in France ...This is what make everybody stand up and come to become crazy on the dance floor just when it start! ...Isn't time to dance, shall we dance now? :)))
Man seeing you stand up is kind of a victory. Zouk music had a real impact in French cultur. it's a classic wedding song, sure even today people still enjoy dancing to it
You made my day Dereck! This is so great song that demonstrates Music is so powerful! Even Créole language is not familiar for English and French speakers, the power of this song is that everybody wants to dance on it! 😀 Here in Belgium and France, this is well known song where boys and girls are dancing together very close (zouk style)... Very "caliente"... 🥵😁
ZOUK MACHINE YAYY, they have awesome HIT SONGS! Their music genre's called Zouk, it's typical from Antilles/west indies. There's basically energetic zouk & soft zouk called zouk love
*”Maldon”* , greatest hit of Zouk Machine !👋 They also performed *”Lanmou soleil”* and *”Sauvé Lanmou”* , very beautiful slower songs... Please, Dereck, react to another French caribbean artist called Jean-Michel Rotin. His voice sounds like Michael Jackson’s. These are his two best kwown hits : *”Cherylane”* and *"Lè ou lov”* . I am sure you will think these songs are fantastic and will enjoy them👍

2:24 they are dressed up as mermaids, that's why the guy is trapped in the end of the music video (girls revange over men behavior). Of course you did spot banna-like suit in the music video at 3:20, but this is only a kayak... the shape and the color properly match those of bananas so it is okay. Note: The suits were designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier which is also responsible for Madonna's pointy bra in 1990.
Actually, the yellow and black represents the women repressed by men(cleaning, brooming, cooking, etc...) - stay at home and being considered weak The red dress represents the butterfly, where they take out their "wings" and fly (women emancipation)

Oh m’y god , I forget this song^^ French Here . This song came out when I was a child. This song was number one in France. Everybody dance and sing this song . Me too. But I was sad because I think that maybe I am a stupid child because I didn’t understand anything with the lyrics ^^ for it was French lyrics. So I didn’t understand why I don’t recognize words. :)
First time I've seen you dancing like that. But I can understand why. That song is so great. Me too, when I hear it, I just can't help singing and dancing. It's just irresistible. So, thanks a lot for that reaction that I've been waiting for a while. After that, I just would like to recommend to you another summer hit that I've really loved at the time : "The Ketchup Song (Aserejé)" by L'as Ketchup. That song is really a pure entertaining summer hit and I'm pretty sure that you'll love it, Dereck.
I always thought that Maldone was superior to Soca Dance. Zouk Machine has that crazy side to it that I prefer Maybe la compagnie creole can live up to it in my heart.

Only the chorus and a few words are in creole. Everything is understandable, even for a French who does'nt speak creole.
