- Before sending the Fox Mustang to Maximum Motorsports to begin our build, it's important to set a number against which to gauge our improvements. Therefore, Matt takes the car to a Shift S3ctor Track Day at Buttonwillow Raceway Park for a few shakedown laps and to set a baseline time against the Fiesta ST as well as an E46 M3.

This video alone proves that you don't have to be the fastest dude on the block to have fun on a race track.
Hope the build goes smoothly!
could not have said it any better
thatdudeinblue watches the same videos as me... i'm not worthy! :P
Doesn't your Mustang have around 360hp at the moment?
650jdb
With a warmed over 302 about 285-300 at rear wheels. Give or take a few, should be home around 280 is tourqe. I could be wrong.
I have a 98 ford taurus v6! does that mean i can have fun?!
memories....Matt I found the picture of you, me and Jimmy at the Jersey shore with all of our mustangs in high school. It's hysterical. Its a hard copy photo. I can scan it and email it to you for TST. text me. -L
if you dont mind me asking, what part of the Jersey shore?
You need to share it everywhere. I want to see a young Matt.
Did Matt every respond?
Anyone who thinks that the Mustang can't be a kickass track car, even without an IRS swap hasn't paid attention the the NASA series.
TheTW13 people in the uk arent going to know what NASA is, but that made me laugh my ass off
Turned down....lol..you'll have to go back a couple years when it was full boost. Nasty street car surprise this guy has. 95' but it is basically the same chassis as the foxbody.
czcams.com/video/ENH8icquO7A/video.html
i'm friggin' psyched to see what smoking tire does to this little hot rod. so much potential.
I've never been a big fan of the Fox body, but I gotta say that it was awesome watching it go around a track. Thanks much!
the SVO Mustangs of the mid 80's actually were great on the track with the turbo 4 cylinder..great balance...they even had Bilstien shocks and large sway bars.
netrioter don't mean to be rude but they were koni reds and rear disc brakes in the back such great cars.
Andrey cordova
so you mean my factory SVO Mustang i bought new in 86 had the wrong shocks...from the factory...you must be some sort of information god
netrioter I have a 86 svo too and has koni reds and I have all the vouchers that only came with koni reds so if you have bilstein that's pretty rare. I just looked at the SVOOA and they also said it came with konis so your svo might be special. Nonetheless bilstein are great! I have some on my 87 ttop gt.
I wonder how many people are going to buy fox body mustangs because of this video series. Be honest, some of you are already looking on craigslist : )
Can't wait to see the build videos!
Matt, thanks for the memories! I had a 92 emerald green coupe with a full Steeda suspension (5 way Tokicos), 94 Cobra brakes on the four corners. It was blown with a Powerdyne that gave me 474rwhp. I had a lot of fun and stories in my coupe. When i saw your face on this video it was a throwback of joy for me. I was starting a Griggs suspension upgrade and had recently installed a Vortech V2-SQ when i lost the car to drunk driver. Bummer! But now its your turn to have fun on this little amazing car.
It is really great that you are letting us be part in new adventure of yours!
Ive watched this video at least 20 times! Smile on my face watching Matt have fun in the same car i used to have, loved, and miss to this day! I should have just kept the car and garaged it!
For this episode, the channel should have been renamed "The Smoking Brakes."
Since I owned a coupe a while back, and it will always be a car I regret selling, I absolutely love that Matt got one and ya'll are doin a build documentary. Thanks, keep 'em coming!
I love this series! Keep up the great work, Matt.
I can never get enough of that helmet good Sir! A work of art & comedy!
Keep the updates coming! This is going to be an awesome build!!
I'm really enjoying this series, its great to see Matt having so much fun with a car of his own. (especially one that I can afford).
Great video Matt can't wait to watch more of this build!
Love this project, Matt. Great idea
my dad had an 86 5.0 capri , first car I ever loved, sweet sound , and plenty of fun!
Can't wait to see the build and enjoyed the enthusiastic drive!!!
The last owner has to love that you are putting her on the track. I can't wait to see how far this project is going to go.
he practically cried when I took it away. Hopefully he enjoys the video.
I enjoy the before videos; makes me want to see the after videos much more and gives a sense of also going along the journey with the car. Looking forward to more; thanks for the vids.
Seeing you wring that thing out really brought back some great memories for me. I used to own an '88 X-FHP SSP Mustang. I purchased it from the auction right after it was decommissioned, painted it back black (FHP colors are black and tan) and left the driver's side spot light in place. Damn that was a fun car. I'd sure love to get another one one day.
This model was such a refreshing change after the dead late 70's and the Mustang II. I can't wait to see what you do to it!
You know, there is not much better in this world than a person who is happy with their car. Congratulations, Matt. Can't wait to see it at the end of the summer.
Been hitting the gym Farah? That steering wheel is flexing like crazy! LOL
Ah, the glorious notchback. Thanks again guys, you make a great product on both Tuned and TST
What a great series this will be.
SOOO looking forward to that build!
I've always loved the fox body mustangs. I'm looking forward to following this build. Good luck!
Badass, looking forward to the build.
Love it!!! Keep the Fox updates coming.
That looks like so much fun.
I'm really looking forward to this series!
Glad to hear is all working out. Cant wait to see whats going in thw foxy
I think Matt is starting to fall in love with his car... Can't wait to see the progress!
Fun project!! Thanks for the video.
looking forward to seeing the upgrades!
You gotta do something about the steering, you could see the column flexing under load hahahaha
Gotta beef that shit up... looks like fun though
I think it was actually more the foamy plastic wheel than the column, but they are both going in the trash anyway lol
I noticed that too, the wheel is like a wet noodle.
TheSmokingTire I love it when content providers actually take the time to read comments and (occasionally) reply. Good for you!
Matt, this looks really fun for sure! Don't even need to mod our cars all crazy, but I do it anyways lol. People who don't bring their cars to the track would be surprised on how fun it is to run your car as is at a road course. It's just fun! It's nice because you can really become one with your car at the track and in general.
Fun video. I'm looking forward to this project's progression.
I love seeing notches used for road course driving instead of drag racing. I can't wait to see the progress of this build, Matt.
Nice video, keep up the great work, looking forward to the next update.
Had no idea that a bonestock 5.0 mustang notchback still existed, awesome score
Matt. This is going to be a great series for the novice as well as those who think they know something about going around corners quickly.
That 5.0 looks heroic on the track. Looking forward to the build, Matt.
Man that's one clean looking fox! I wish we still had some of those running around the Midwest in a non destroyed condition. I am looking forward to watching this build!
Cant wait to see the finished product! Congrats onbuilding one Bad Ass Road Fox!
that was awesome. i'm a big FoxBody fan and have always wanted to see a stock one on a road course; i've always been a drag racer. i'll be looking out for future videos. so kool.
Great to see the car is solid on the track. Of COURSE you're using Maximum Motorsports. It's amazing what simple upgrades can do for the Fox platform.
Mat, I got out of Mustangs years ago being around Japanese cars every day with my job. Then I seen your video nearly a year ago now and got me thinking about getting another. Well last week I closed the deal on a 90 Saleen , I plan on putting the car back 110% and will track it a little on bigger courses only. Thanks and cant wait to see yours all finished up.
Your videos are fantastic...thanks
we where there with our honda, i remember this clean fox body puddle around the pitt lol i love fox body , i had two lx and two gt in the pass, will love see this car again soon.
look fun and not a bad line thru buttonwillow!.. glad the brakes held up
'dat fox body. Good luck on the project, can't wait to see how it turns out.
This is my favorite build I've ever seen on youtube... and its just in benchmarking
well as a mustang fan, after the first video, i wasnt holding much hope for this build but this video was fun. cant wait to see more!
cant wait to see more!!
Can't wait to see how the car is when your done with it Matt.
badass car keep up the good work :)
very clean. I like it
Matt love the notchback! I hope all the upgrades go well. The second car I ever owned was a exact replica of yours except mine truly was more down the "zero fucks givin" route. Either way good luck and hope the track times fall and the smiles increase
MM will make that Fox awesome. Looking forward to the future videos, Matt
People are probably going to give you mad shit for saying you'll make your mustang faster than an M3, but i think you can do it :)
it really won't be that hard with the mods I'm doing. Should beat that thing no problem.
TheSmokingTire
You should drop 20 sec on that lap and clear the stock M3 with only a couple of simple mods (and not big dollar "bought a 500hp crate motor" type of things
Thanks for the video. I had a Fox Mustang in High School with the 302. It was a fun car and great at the drag strip. Turning one into a track car seems like a fun project. I always like when guys with cars no one expects to do well put up great lap times.
Sub frame connectors are a must, good billstein shocks, lower springs, caster camber plates, lower and upper control arms , fwd and rear sway bars for suspension starters. Wider tires and probably a good chip tune for the motor. I run 275 rears and 235 front with these suspensions mods it's a rocket on corners now. Oh yeah a short shifter helps lol BRAKES TOOgood luck on the fox Matt! Can't wait to see how it turns out
What is a good private sale price for a mustang with all these mods? I found one similarly equipped and I want to make an educated offer.
Funny video :) Keep up the evolution! Regards from Portugal.
Excited!!
As mentioned previously, the steering wheel flexes a lot. Your car will be able to beat the bimmer, but the suspension and brakes needed to setup right. Even retaining the live rear axle, you will eventually trounce your buddy's car
Love that car Matt. I remember seeing a good number of those cars back in the late 80s and early 90s in high school in NY; they seemed to be a common feature among the Westchester suburban-guido set. I'm thinking New Rochelle, North Avenue bars, circa 1988, Iona students, very loud Acid House music, and the smell of Drakkar Noir. While I'd like to forget all of that forever, I'd still like a tuned-up Fox 'stang. Needs some fuzzy dice tho to make it complete.
me and my friends all had them back in the day at Rye Country Day School. None of us were guidos though.
TheSmokingTire They don't let guidos into Rye Country Day, duh! I went to Scarsdale. I played in a rock band with a kid from RCD I cant remember anymore. We played you in lacrosse I think once for a friendly scrimmage, and naturally a fight broke out. Nothing is lamer than upper-middle-class suburban kids trying to pretend one is more thug than the other. We used to sneak kegs into Shenarock(?) club and have parties there and RCD kids would show up. Good times.
You rock Matt!
I love that fox mustang!!
Cool vid, Matt. That looks like a hell of a time. I still can't get over your helmet.
Hah I love you for this Matt. Turn her into the best beast that she can be. Looking forward to its future
I will be watching this build as I also just purchased a 1990 notchback and will be building it for road racing also.
Looks like a great time. That's what it's all about.
Very nice!
at about 4:30 it looks like you're about to pull the steering wheel off, Matt.
5.0 Foxbody....awesome!! I just picked up a 1990 5.0 Mustang, good times again....90's style! You pretty much have to rip off the entire suspension and replace everything and the solid rear needs to be swapped with a 99-2001 Cobra IRS rear end and replace the power steering and use the manual steering rack, it works better on the track!! Have fun 5.0 liter style! oh yea, 4.10 in the rear work great on road courses, all you will use most of the time is 3rd gear and maybe 4th once in awhile....depending on track size!
honest reply.. that is what keeps those flexing tin cans going. Also, the steering column moves.. just watch the video. That is not a car to just slap a sway bar on..the arch roots below doors will break.
***** yea, i had many fox stangs in the past 25 years, to make that car handle, all of the suspension literally has to replaced and a roll cage definitely tightens it up but, in my experience, frame connectors makes it to rigid but, some people use them and some dont but, a engine bay brace along with a roll cage tightens it up pretty good. The bottom line is, it's cheap fun and good times!
MrKeyboardCommando They are really flexable stock. If you ever buy one installing some weld in subframe connectors are a must.
MrKeyboardCommando Ah, body flex could be fun sometimes and the Mustangs have tons of flex...lol If you hate body flex then don't even consider a convertible or T-Top Mustang.....you and the car will both shutter!
Looks good. Miss my '91 5.0. Have fun with the build.
Notch, gotta love it
My two favorite things, manual transmission and a mustang notchback, very nice!
I want a track day in march....psyched to see how this turns out.
Have fun Matt.. Experience changes everything.. Enjoy..
matt you're gonna love their stuff brother. maximum mortorsports rocks
she's going to be a very good in your hands.waiting for next update
Im ready to see some updates!
Lol I saw this getting filmed and was on the track with Matt as well..good luck with the build Matt. I'd love to see the video when I came u behind you with blue garage built Subaru GC8 when you were driving the Aveo..=)
I want to see more of this car.
engine sounds meaty
The 5 liter heater! Nice car!
You're gonna need some things, but glad you're happy with it :)
This guy is funny cant wait too see what he do to his mustang
cool car. these videos and the one take videos are fucking awesome. you rock!
love the 5.0
Dope love foxbodys
Awesome! More TST videos!
Get that suspension/brakes done and dialed in, and you'll have no problem beating that E46 (this is coming from a E46 fan). Good luck and I look forward to hearing about your progress!
I like the Caliber Customs cameo at the very end. Hahaha
Can't wait to see how this build turns out! If I had some money to waste I would love to find a 1986 Camaro z28 like my dad had and drop in an LS3 or something. That would be my dream project right there.
It was great to see you guys out there. As you could probably tell, not a many of us show up in Mustangs. I'd love to see our numbers grow. Maybe when it's done, you could join us in the time attack sessions and kick some unsuspecting M3 ass.
I do plan on running time attack and hillclimb events once the performance is where I want it.
TheSmokingTire Awesome. Looking forward to it.
Amazing
Keep it going and keep the vids coming. I love Fox's. Im curios to see what you do.
