Thrombotic Microangiopathy - Unraveling the Genetics with Dr Anuja Java

Dr. Anuja Java is a transplant nephrologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Director of Kidney Transplantation at the John Cochran VA medical center in St. Louis. She attended medical school in India and came to the US for her Internal Medicine training at Orlando Regional Medical Center where she also served as the chief resident. She completed a Nephrology fellowship at University of Oklahoma and Transplant Nephrology fellowship at Washington University. After completing her clinical training, she pursued a basic science research fellowship under the mentorship of John Atkinson at Washington University where she trained in complement biology.
Her research focuses on defining the functional consequences of genetic variants identified in patients with complement-mediated diseases, including atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome, C3 glomerulopathy, preeclampsia and age-related macular degeneration. These structure-function evaluations are often used to delineate the risk of recurrence of disease after a kidney transplant and assist with individualized clinical decision-making for patients. She co-chairs the NIH-funded Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) complement gene curation expert panel.
Her clinical interests include taking care of patients after a kidney transplant, with a particular emphasis on those at risk for recurrent glomerular diseases.
Dr. Java has served on the ASN career advancement committee and was the Director of the fellowship subcommittee in the Forum for Women in Medicine (FWIM) at Washington University in St. Louis. She is an elected councillor in Women in Nephrology (WIN). She is also recipient of the 2022 National Kidney Foundation “Award of Excellence” for significant contributions to the field of kidney disease and the renal community.
