  • Dr. J. Brian Byrd is a physician-researcher and cardiologist at the University of Michigan interested in hypertension and the effects of aldosterone, sodium, and potassium on health. He has recently completed the SALTY study, a randomized, cross-over clinical trial that provided low (230 mg/day) and high (6,900 mg/day) sodium to healthy volunteers, in randomized sequence. The primary aim of SALTY is to identify changes in urinary extracellular vesicle-shuttled mRNA caused by activation of the mineralocorticoid receptor. Additional aspects of sodium-related biology are also being evaluated in the SALTY study. Completed or planned aspects of SALTY include studies of urinary and circulating metabolites and proteomics.
    Learning Objectives:
Increase understanding of the cardiorenal implications of sodium-aldosterone interactions
Increase understanding of contemporary approaches to mitigating cardiorenal damage from mineralocorticoids
