He has a very mesmerizing, calming voice! Great episode!
I realized it reminds me of John Malkovich and now I'm not going to be able to shake that association
Indeed!
@@lartisteautravail They played father and son in "The man in the iron mask" Peter's character is not much in the movie but when you see them together it made so much sense, their voices are very alike
Luna holy cow. I watched that movie in theaters and completely forgot about that. Thanks for pointing it out!
@@lartisteautravail no problem 😁 I had to go back and rewatch the movie because i missed it too! I have to say i didn't know who Peter was back in 1998 so that's why i didn't remember him 🙈
Was pretty sure he just called out his wife for taking a shit during Wanda.
But then put 2 and 2 together, Maggie is amazing in The Deuce. One of my favorite shows lately
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
had the exact same train of thought
Yeah same here.
I'm laughing my ass off thinking about someone actually doing that.
"Yeah, my wife was on the toilet through the whole goddamn thing. God, I still remember the smell..."
I can relate to her. Doing same thing watching this

@@Ravi-xf8dw Glad to have helped.
He's really got a John Malkovich quality to him.
Also anyone who sings True Stories' praise is good in my book
0:12 BURGER KING FOOT LETTUCE
I need a sequel to Being John Malkovich where Malkovich jumps into Sarsgaard's body to live for a extra 30 years. Somebody call Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze!
i think he played Malkovich's son in Man in the iron mask
@@TheJohnnyonthespot1 Now I need to see this Malkovich in this closet to select films.
It's really weird seeing just how much of a nice and soft-spoken guy he is considering the amount of loud or violent assholes he's played throughout his career
Exactly the kind of person you cast to play violent assholes.
I watched Safe by Todd Haynes because Gaspar Noé recommended it here and I have to say, that movie is excellent and incredibly underlooked and underrated.
It has been named best film of the 1990s a few times. So there is a lot of love for it out there. It's a masterpiece for sure.
Saw it for the first time last month. It lived up to the hype.
My only criticism is the 3rd Act went on a little too long.
Todd Haynes is really fantastic
Just saw Todd Haynes’ “Dark Waters” which playing currently. It is a very important film that is flying under the radar.
@@beetlespacexdragon7815 Agreed. Saw it in my local cinema, and there were 4 other people in the auditorium. Meanwhile, both screenings of Sonic the Hedgehog were packed to the rafters.
can we PLEASE get paul thomas anderson in the closet? he would make love with the discs for 20-30 hours
Fruitsy YES PLEASE
can we PLEASE stop requesting PTA in the closet on every single one of these videos?
@@bumpushoundsruindinner Only after we get PTA on here!
Imagine PTA and Quentin Tarantino 🤯
He is such a strong actor. I loved his performance in "Shattered Glass" as the magazine editor who discovers his most popular author is a fraud.
That's by far my favorite role of his., and in a middling film!
I want this dude to have a conversation with John Malkovich.
F. Kusuma they played father and son in The Man in the Iron Mask
@@calvinlaw7790 omigod!! How did I miss this. You're right. Awesome.
I also thought of the same thing. They actually sound so much alike.
Two pompous assholes in the same room!
@@elizabethsmith9624 What a stupid comment.
A closer video - FINALLY with a good quality sound and color grading! Just wow, Criterion, you nailed it
I could listen to Peter talk for hours! That voice! :)
The Night Porter really affected me a lot as well, happy to own that one now. I'll never understand people who think it should be banned.
Descartesdom77 Love that film. However I think the transfer could have looked better.
Its not an easy film to watch, but as someone who also went to catholic school, I can c y this movie would be shown to a class even. There many moral and religious questions to discuss on this one
Knee jerk reaction to some pretty controversial subjects addressed during the time period.
"Think" is not the word I would use.
We need more actors and various collaborators like Cinematographer, Producer and such. Plus we need more Closet pick videos! I absolutely love people talking about their favorite movies.
I like him! He's so chill, sincere, and unpretentious!
This man is such a gentle, sexy, clever, peaceful guy I ever saw. It's hard no to stop and pay some attetion to him whenever he opens his mouth. Absolutely Lovely!
Great choices, Peter S. “Safe” is the best movie ever made about the awful, preventable consequences of hysteria. I published a paper about the film in a psychoanalytic journal. Todd Haynes is one of a kind brilliant, interesting
Link? Is it free?
Yea, could we read your paper please?
Just watched Breaking the Waves last night actually. Great movie.
I haven't seen it yet, but I did see the trailer and was surprised at the song it used.
Soo good
Breaking The Waves is such a beautiful and heartbreaking movie, in so many ways. It’s in LVT’s top 3 best in my opinion.
True Stories is one of the most delightful, colorful and musically fantastic films ever. John Goodman such a sweet bear!
Love him, one of my favourite character actors. Particularly pleased to see his love for Safe, Eating Raoul, La Strada and Safe.
Gavin Henderson did you say Safe twice just to be safe?
I want to see tilda Swinton do one of these
Dear Mr. Sarsgaard,
I feel I owe you an appreciative thank you.
Breaking the Waves was a film I missed upon release, knew very little of then and subsequently, forgot. (Mea maxima culpa)
The manner in which you described the film intrigued me. “When she prays, that’s exactly how I pray.”, was the point at which this film went from ‘should see’ to ‘must see’.
One more! One more!
Love the enthusiasm.
David Lynch should've all ready been invited a long time ago. Such a genius and chatter. The perfect blend for this videos.
Just because there hasn't been an episode with David Lynch yet, doesn't mean he wasn't invited.
Been in a bromance with Peter since Boys Don't Cry. What a phenomenal talent. He even made the Green Lantern watchable.
The Night Porter was a phenomenal film, IMO. It got massacred by the critics when it was released, but it shook me to the core.
Impressive visuals and more than passable audio?? Are we sure this is a Criterion Closet episode?
Looks like a guy who can keep his head during tense situations
Breaking the waves! So brilliant for so many reasons!
'Experimenter' is one of my very favorite movies ! Congratulations
I've got some questions for Father Garrarelli
That is one attractive man. Also.. can also highly recommend Safe (1995) - he's exactly right about it. It's got a real Kubrick/Lynch feel about it.
Hes very intense, seems like the closet itself made him very emotional. Very cool
He's an asshole who treats his family's cat very poorly
I will absolutely see a remake of Eating Raoul starring Peter. I will also watch a sequel to Garden State that tells the story of a middle-aged card-collecting grave-digger seeking meaning after the death of his mother.
Great picks. Eating Raoul has got to be the funniest movie I've ever seen. The dialogue and one-liners are hysterical and delivered with such tongue in cheek in the most absurd situations. Brilliant!
Jesus Christ, it’s Colson.
Great choices. Love La Strada. Crazy to think he’s almost 50!
One of the best things about Criterion closet videos is that we’re able to share filmmakers’ stories and taste as well as be surprised by their choices. I honestly thought Peter Saarsgard would select meh movies, but Wanda, The Night Porter and Eating Raoul?! My concept on him was definitely rised up.
Yeah,it's good when they're aware enough to realize that it would be boring to just pick Raging Bull or The Godfather. Maybe those are great films and had a big effect on a lot of people, but it's great to shine a spotlight on movies perhaps a little less known
@@ianrobinson4200 Saarsgard knows how to pick movies at Criterion, pick his wife Maggie, but doesn't know how to pick roles. I think the last good one was in 'An Education', ten years ago...
And you're right. Criterion closet is full of alternative movies to be discovered. Usually they are by great directors.
@@winthiscar My favourite of his might be in Shattered Glass,I think he should have been nominated for an Academy Award for that
@@ianrobinson4200 I've heard about this film, but didn't get the chance to watch it. Thanks for reminding me! I'll put it on my watchlist
I'm just sat here eating Gypsy Cream biscuits and bingeing upon these little closet vignettes. It's like I'm going shopping for movied with the eggheads of film buffery as well as the celebrated creatives. Accumulatively there are certain titles which seem to be 'the ones'....rather disconcertingly though, it seems like Salo is wayyyy too popular!! Halliwell's dismissal of it as emetic in his film guide feels like a long long time ago. :)
A priest showed him Night Porter?
I'm afraid to think of the reasons why..
Only as one half of a back-to-back viewing session with Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom.
seems normal
Catholics, am I right?
Yes JJ....as well as most of Italian Neorealism, which suggests Sarsgaard was in high school (no ten year old is sitting through Open City). So what's the big deal. When I was in HS a good portion of my friends had seen John Waters' movies (the early ones, not Hairspray), as well as plenty of cable soft core.
I love 'Breaking the waves'. Felt completely wrecked by the end of it, but what a film.
Black Mass is not a great movie, but his performance in it is so inspired it caught my attention. He made you believe in every ounce of fear he was projecting. He's done so much, but that's what I really cling on to as a great performance of his. That and The Salton Sea (which I'll vouch for as underrated), as Val Kilmer's sidekick.
Bryan8329 should watch his role in the movie “empire” with leguizamo
True Stories! Loved that movie--haven't thought of it for a long time.
he's got some awesome picks. i have a few of those films. i've seen most of them ("wanda" is the only film that i haven't seen). now get maggie to be on that and then jake and then all 3.
wow peter. well said! exactly what i felt in breaking the waves!
Loved him in "Orphan"
4:00 damn right Saarsgard
Am I childish for laughing at Maggie “doing The Deuce?”
I am glad you have good memories of your Priest. That is unusual today.
I am glad that the films he showed you blew you away and he did not blow you away
4:20 “This movie” unwittingly holds up back of DVD. Haha I think that’s the Closet Series in a nutshell
Nice to see some love for Lars. Great picks and stories.
LvT is a predator.
I got the Brothers of St. Patrick teachers. They made sure we studied great literature, especially the Irish authors, as you can imagine.
I would love to go into that room. I really want My Dinner With Andre to get a Blu-ray
Noah Kaser Criterion has a blu ray of it already.
@@haydenschmidt6904 Thank You
@@noahkaser6347 Of course! I've been wanting to pick it up myself for a long time now but I'm just holding out until the next sale so I can get the Andre Gregory & Shawn Wallace boxset.
Great picks. Now I have to take out a bank loan to pick some of these up!!!
I need to watch Wanda! It’s been on my list, it seems like my kind of movie.
A lot of people hate The Night Porter, but I love it! Great pick.
Criterion collection should eventually release American Movie. I love that documentary!
La Strada is my 2nd favorite movie after 2001 ASO. Such a great film! Masterpiece.....
That's an awesome shirt he’s rockin!
Wanda? Never heard of this... Maybe I give it a try, thanks for the tip.
you should put links to the recs in the description
Eating Raoul omg, its been so long since I've seen it, I've got to see it again. I think it has some of the people, that John Waters used alot. GREAT MOVIE !
Safe is a very underrated classic!
The video quality is getting better
Great segment, didn't realize he was such a cool dude. Looking good too, aging well, keep it up.
He's not cool at all, he's a narcissist and an animal abuser
@@elizabethsmith9624 Was the animal he abused you by any chance?
@@gustenhr ^ Found the sociopathic neckbeard!
Love this guy's voice.
So does Maggie Gyllenhaal.
You can see how everyone likes this guy and wants to work with him.
Love this guy. Experimenter!
would LOVE to see Céline Sciamma, Almodovar and PTA at some point
WANDA was directed by Barbara Loden who was married Elia Kazan.
He reminds me of SNL's 2004 pirate convention spoof that SARSGAARDed him forever.
Tell Peter I'm still waiting for the refund on my Peter Sarsgaard's SARS Guards.
I honestly think that's the only reason SNL got him.
One of the lucky few who are sexier in their middle years. The beard and close cut with a subtle tan look great.
The commentary was also good.
First noticed him in Garden State with/from Zach Braff and with Natalie Portman.
When SNL was still funny, Sarsgaard hosted and they did a bit where he is approached by pirates that just keep repeating his name. Obvious but hilarious!
I still remember that episode! it was so hilarious
*A little bit different for me...*
- Colleen Rafferty
Safe and Breaking the Waves, what more could you want?
Need Shattered Glass Criterion Blu!
He's sooooo wonderful
True Stories! Made me happy.
"ITS INDEFENSIBLE! don't you know that?" Great actor.
I just rewatched Robot and Frank for the 10th time. Sublime movie.
This man is so fucking talented and that should be brought up much more.
Does he not have a blu-ray player?
Criterion may be using these as "auditions" to see whom they are going to interview in their special features. As many Criterion fans know, one of Criterion discs' selling points is the well-made featurettes and commentaries on the discs. Whenever you see "director-approved" or whoever-approved editions, it is because Criterion hired that filmmaker to participate in the making of the disc and contribute to interviews, commentaries, supplements, etc. If the filmmaker doesn't contribute = no disc for you! That's why Woody Allen's films will never be in Criterion in a million years. David Lynch used to be against special features too, and if he were still the same way, his films wouldn't be on Criterion discs either.
Oh! Cool bit of insight there. 👍
He was great in "the Skeleton Key".
This may be the best one!
Breaking the Waves! Nice.
Does anyone know the brand of shirt he’s wearing. I can’t make out, what the little black label says.
THIS. I want that shirt ahahahah
It's Howler Brothers
Colleen Munro Thank you!
Armani
Love Breaking the Waves.
when I watch these vids I want to immediately go and watch the most mainstream movies ever made
Everything he says about Safe is spot on.
I’ve seen (and liked) all the movies he picked. I need to get out more.
Garden State needs a Criterion release
Glad to see he got the part in the Michael Stipe biopic.
La Strada right out the gate! I'm jelly.
that shirt be bangin
"doing the duece" with context means everything lol
Would absolutely go bananas if Pablo Larraín's "Jackie" gets a Criterion release. Pls
It has a nice Blu-ray edition already.
"He's just a fast food knight"
It would be amazing to have someone like Michael Bay here, and then Herzog...just to keep things interesting.
I bet Bay has great taste in other people's movies, and Herzog doesn't. Most directors I like have crap taste.
@@pinetree1616 exactly, that's the whole beauty of tastes in general
He is so light and emotionally fluid and just simply unreadable that it is almost sinister. Love his performances, different in every role yet he always has that endearingly unfathomable idiosyncrasy. Would think he was a lovely human being if I could figure him out. Or not.
That’s hot
