    The pool had been prepared for the summer and after a few days the pump lost all its 'get up and go'...so-called 'maintenance contractors' let us down, so followed these instructions, step by step, problem solved, nice strong jet at both ends. Anyone watching this and wondering if it's a reliable tutorial, get on and do it, this guy helped me fix the problem in 10 minutes...👍👍

    Thanks so much for this video. I bought a house with a pool and the instructions left behind by the previous owner were cryptic. They included the settings and instructions to turn things off, but nowhere did it say to run the pump or for how long. Heater wasn't working and the manual indicated it may need a backwash. I followed your instructions and the heater came on after the backwash! You saved me right before my daughter's birthday pool party! Thank you!

    I have a similar setup, but my valve doesn't seem to engage as I move between each mode. Am I doing something wrong, or is it possible that I need to replace my valve?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Před 3 lety +1

      It may be as simple as just lubing the o'rings inside the valve (haven't done a video on that yet mainly because there are at least two different variations of this valve). HOWEVER, I've used heavy duty silicon lube (not basic WD40) sprayed into the center of the valve mechanism and then worked a bit and it's helped. If that doesn't help I still don't think it necessary to replace the valve ONLY the O'rings inside it.

      If you mean open the valve before you turn the pump motor on, YES. But you have to open the backwash valve to backwash the filter BUT DO IT WITH THE PUMP MOTOR OFF. Then once it's open turn the pump on. This video may clarify for you: czcams.com/video/4PutKmGaz1w/video.htmlfeature=shared

      @PoolSchooler  Před 5 lety +1

      Louis Martinez actually I’m not really a fan of sand filters for any pool. I just don’t feel they are very efficient. I’d suggest looking into a cartridge filter such as the Pentair PNCC00750160 Clean & Clear 75’ Cartridge Filter and 1hp Optiflo Pump Kit. Copy and paste that description into your browser and it should bring up a bunch of them.
      It’s not cheap. But I’m a fan and Hayward and Pentair Cartridge filters. If you look up “Above Ground Pool Cartridge Filter and pumps you should find a bunch from those two manufacturers.
      Hope that helps.

      The Mike (Mic) Bast? Anyways, if you're seeing sand coming out you probably have a cracked or broken manifold inside the filter which would need to be repaired or replaced (probably replaced). It looks similar to the one in this link (only using the link for the pic - I'm not affiliated with this site at all). www.inyopools.com/Products/07501352058643.htm

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Před rokem

      No absolutely don't force it. The o'rings inside either need lubrication or replacement. You can first try spraying something like WD 40 or another HD silicon spray into the valve (around the center openings when the handle pivots) see if that helps. If not you'll probably have to have a repair person come out and replace the o'rings. It's worth paying someone to do that for you.

    We just switched from a 1.5hp pump to 2hp pump. What should my psi be before backwashing? It seems to run high now all the time.

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Před 4 měsíci

      That's hard to estimate. I would've suggested that when you put in the new 2 hp pump and cleaned the filter make note of the psi when you had a completely clean filter (and your return ports were fully open) then you can know what the starting psi was.

  • @bigbluenationsmith2489

    I wonder if you could help me with a problem I have. When I turn off my pump, water will come out the skimmer. With such force it blows up the lid. This is the first year out of the last three it has done this. Thank you for your time. Look forward to hear back.

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Před 3 lety

      Hi Terry. Typically what your experiencing is called blowback caused by your system cavitating. Usually caused by some type of flow restriction. Make sure your suction and return valves are open and check for leaks in your pump lid and o ring.

    How often should you backwash, and do you determine that based on the pressure gauge’s psi reading?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Před 3 lety +2

      Pressure gauges sometimes aren't accurate but it does help to keep an eye on them for DE or cartridge filters. But typically I backwash a sand filter every 1-2 weeks in the swim season, every 4 weeks off season.

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Před 2 lety

      It sounds like your backwash pipe is hard plummed rather than a soft hose like the one in my video so if there is a valve for the waste of when you backwash then, yes, you want to open that so the water has somewhere to go. And also when you use rinse as well.

      This particular pool is plumed to drain into their yard, so it helps water their grass. But you can plumb it where you want. If you can't trace the pipe for yours it may be plummed directly into the sewer.

    I leave my pump on and go to waste? Am I doing something wrong?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Před 4 lety

      You should have your valve set to filter for normal filtering use. If you select "to waste" that's usually if you have to manually vacuum your pool so the dirty water doesn't have to pass through the sand and simply goes straight out. So (as I say in the video) for normal use, it should be on "Filter". To backwash you use "backwash" then after backwashing you want to runt it on "rinse" for about 30 seconds and then move it back to "filter".

    Hi Kenny what kind of pressure should show on the gauge ..i have a two speed hayward pump one setting for circulation in my spa and the other for the jets ..I've heard that higher pressures might mean a a backwash is necessary? thanks in advance and for the great video!

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  Před 3 lety +1

      It's hard to be specific with a variable speed pump. The best way to tell is to backwash and recharge your DE filter THEN TAKE NOTE OF THE PRESSURE AT BOTH PUMP SPEEDS. That would be your baseline pressure (obviously it'd be lower at the lower pump speed). Then you can go from there. Typically the range at high speed would be between 12 and 22 psi. THAT'S WITH FULL RETURN FLOW TO THE WHOLE POOL NOT JUST THE SPA. When you move the return flow to the spa at high speed the pressure will for sure be higher. REMEMBER, it's not just a dirty filter that causes an increase in pressure. Pump motor speed, and return flow also affect pressure. The less restrictions to the return flow (ie: open return valves to pool AND spa) the lower the pressure.
