  • Today, we hook this Amazon Solar Panel directly to a 30 LB. trolling motor and create a Solar Powered canoe. LEOCH 100-watt solar panel.

We find out how fast the sun will take you with NO BATTERY! I cover the majority of the boat with Solar panels, then throw caution to the wind as we set sail into the unknown. This is just the beginning of my new Solar boat project.
I actually go almost as fast as I can paddle, about half the speed of the battery. This idea really got me thinking, let me know what you think I should do to improve on this.

Connecting solar panels directly to a trolling motor is generally not recommended unless the trolling motor is specifically designed to accept direct DC input from solar panels. Here are a few points to consider:
Voltage Compatibility: Solar panels typically output DC voltage, which needs to match the operating voltage of the trolling motor. Trolling motors often run on 12V or 24V DC systems, so you'll need solar panels that provide the same voltage output.
Regulation and Control: Directly connecting solar panels to a trolling motor without proper regulation can lead to overcharging the batteries or damaging the motor itself. You'll likely need a charge controller to regulate the voltage and current from the solar panels to ensure it matches what the trolling motor and batteries can handle.
Battery Considerations: Trolling motors are usually powered by batteries (like deep cycle marine batteries). Solar panels are used to charge these batteries, not directly power the motor. The setup typically involves solar panels charging the batteries, and then the batteries powering the trolling motor.
Efficiency and Power Requirements: Trolling motors can require a significant amount of power, especially at higher speeds. The solar panels need to be capable of providing sufficient power to both charge the batteries adequately and potentially supplement the motor's power demands.
Practicality: While it's theoretically possible to design a system where solar panels directly power a trolling motor, it's often more practical and efficient to use the panels to charge batteries and then use the batteries to power the motor. This approach allows for smoother operation and better control over the power supply.
In summary, while it's not impossible to connect solar panels directly to a trolling motor, it requires careful consideration of voltage compatibility, the need for regulation and control (via a charge controller), and practicality in terms of power requirements. Typically, solar panels are used to charge batteries, which in turn power the trolling motor, providing a more reliable and efficient setup.
