Not the way to handle this at all. By approaching and backing away you are teaching the dog you are scared of him and he is winning the war. Also by holding the leash makes the dog more aggressive and tense, which creates more anxiety for the dog. Either corner the dog and approach him with a muzzle and be in charge or leave it alone. Your just agitating him. This is a great example of how to teach reactive behavior.
