Sony originally was going do a third installment to the live action film series but was cancelled because Papa Smurf’s voice actor name Jonathan winters passed away and The Smurfs 2 ended up being his last film role
I knew that he wasn't going to give this the Seal of Garbage, but also not say it's great, either. I can't for AniMat to tear "The Emoji Movie" apart, though!
Also, how can Kelly Asbury go from making great movies like "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" and "Shrek 2" to a mediocre film like this?

Is it the writers fault for being lazy and not doing the good job or is it Sony fault for making dumb changes? It makes no sense.

Personally, I think the only major flaws with this movie are the pacing and the pop culture references.

I agree. This was a fun film that just lost momentum at several key moments. Some of the scenes are unnecessary. Better dialogue/silence (sometimes the characters speak when it's not essential to the plot) and more concise editing look like the two biggest things that could improve this production.

FINALLY, A SMURFS MOVIE DONE RIGHT!!!!!!
I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed the movie ~ even if it's made for children. But hey ~ you certainly had a point on the review.
Like I stated before from my own perspective, whilst not necessarily perfect ~ it is still a visually fun experience for both children and the nostalgic fans of Smurfs too.
It's fine but The Smurfs definitely deserves better. The original TV show, despite its flaws and shortcomings, was a much better (at least the first 3-4 seasons) Peyo's comics are great and it's frustrating to see the franchise being mishandled by either by greedy incompetents (see: the first two movies) or by well-meaning people who don't really get The Smurfs (Kelly Asbury). I wanted this movie to succeed. I really like Asbury- Spirit is one of my favourite animated movies from the 2000s)- but he didn't grow up with the comics, let alone the original version. And there you go, he fell into the same traps that so many other people made before him. Maybe the smurfs work better in a 20-45 minutes format, but I think a movie is doable (The Magic Flute)
I'm with you, SmurfyDan. This movie was beautiful, cartoony eye candy that really satisfied my smurfy needs. My only complaint was that there wasn't enough of the other Smurfs in the village! I'm hoping they spend more time with them if there's a sequel (or perhaps a new cartoon series?). That would be smurftastic!
At least The AniMat Seal of Garbage has been reserved for the Emoji Movie as number 3. It was a mixed bag.

The Story: 4/10 (The movie's weakest point, I have to admit it's all over the place)
The Animation: 10/10 (I think the animators works the hardest in this, and it was worth for them!)
The Characters: 9/10 (Maybe some will disagree, but I love The Smurfs, and the characters in this movie are lovely!)

The visuals and animation were incredible! AniMat is just biased against cartoony/exaggerated animation.
Considering AniMat's hatred for Sony Animation, I wouldn't be surprised if he's just being biased and rated it lower than it deserved. The animation is gorgeous, and I enjoyed this movie.

in fact, I think it deserves to be in the best, it may not be anything special but I don't think it belongs in the worst.

You have no idea how refreshing it id to hear someone say something positively about Cars 3. I feel like one of the few people were excited for this movie from the word go.
But yes, Lightning will have his awesome moment, Cruz will be adorable, and I’ll see my babies again! Maybe even cry when Doc is brought up.
I have a feeling we will see his crash in a flashback and... maybe even Lightning remembering his death and... my god, I can hear Lightning yelling, “Doc? DOC!” and being in denial and then Cruz or someone will tell him that “would Doc want you to do this?"
McKenzie Eby Thank you so much. I too am tired of all the haters. I have been beyond excited for Cars 3 ever since it was first announced. I'm more excited for it than I was, am and ever will be for Incredibles 2. I acknowledge that Cars 2 is very flawed but I still really enjoy it and put it above Ratatouille, Brave and A Bug's Life when ranking Pixar movies but that's just my opinion.
Lightning McQueen is my all time favourite Pixar character and I reckon with Cars 3 we will see him at his absolute best. I love the first movie but even I have to acknowledge he was kind of a dick in the first act. Thankfully though he more than redeemed himself throughout the movie. One major complaint I have with Cars 2 is that I wish he were given more to do. I would have loved it if he were part of the spy action subplot and was given weapons and gadgets to fight bad guys. But again that's my opinion.
I think the biggest reason I'm excited is because the movie is making Doc Hudson relevant again. I think the character is deserving of a proper tribute and flashback and I can't wait to see how it plays out. I'm also hoping maybe they explain how he died. I mean if they don't that's totally fine but it would just be a nice extra touch.
Cars 3 is officially my most anticipated movie of 2017, not just animated, but most anticipated movie in general. While I am jealous I have to wait 6 days after the U.S and Canada (it comes out in my home country Australia June 22nd) it could be worse. Those poor souls in Singapore and Malaysia have to wait until August 31! Thank you so much for your amazing comment and your love for Cars 3. Subscribed :-).
Cars 3 is going to be the best of the franchise. As a NASCAR fan the story itself sounds awesome and it will give Cars the charm it had in 2006. I think it's a dark horse oscar pick

Purchased this film for no other reason than that the animation quality looked impressive. Ended up liking it as a movie as well.
My favorite character is Smurfette because she try to find herself to figure out who she really is and I always rooting for her when she count Gargamel
Were the Smurfs really that good to begin with? Granted, I never grew up with the Smurf, but when I did watch them, I found them more annoying than charming........ kinda like Alvin and the Chipmunks...........

Story 3/10 (it's very predictable and laced with filler and awful writing. Ya remember the selfie joke?)
Animation: 7/10 FINALLY SONYS ANIMATION DONT SUCK HERE! It reminds me of the peanuts movie where they took the original characters and made them look like they did in cgi. It's not the best animation in the world but it's still good. I think sonys animation only works with stuff like Hanna Barbera cartoons

Clumsy wasn't that funny,
Brainy had no point only to explain the stuff we know, Hefty felt odd to me I mean he's always flirting with Smurfette and I found it creepy considering that they are technically siblings. Gargamil is annoying, Smurf blossom is also annoying, smurf storm is just Aria from Equestria Girls rainbow rocks, and smurf willow and papa weren't much. Oh and smurfette is just the typical girl character.
I say only watch this if you are a fan of the original, like with the peanuts movie. Is it better then peanuts movie? Not even close. Still it's one of sony's best movie in my opinion

Well I stand corrected about this film getting the Seal of Garbage. Though we all know the Emoji Movie will get that, that's for sure.

Well I can only tell that this movie will do better overseas then in the USA. I think it would be treated better there and maybe even the writing might be different too! I remember seeing the trailer at the movies and didn't play any pop song there so it must be different here than there. However I do want to see Andre black nerd thoughts on this as you know he's also a huge smurfs fan! XD
Well, that's not too bad.
That happened in Russia in which there were very creative word-play with the jokes and the Russian voice for Gargamel loosely sounding like Paul Winchell's take on the character. I say loosely because he has a more low and gravelly voice as oppose to Winchell's a bit high and gravelly voice.

This movie was a unique gem even if it was for kids The thing about this movie that I like was rather than focusing on all the other Smurfs it focused on the ones Smurf we never knew could even get a chance which was smurfette I mean come on we always wanted to know what smurfette was going to do with her life knowing that she was the only girl Smurf in the entire series plus the animation was top tier and I liked that they showed other Smurfs that were the opposite gender which answered a lot of questions that many fans out there always wondered.
The emoji movie, great job sony.... now animat will never have faith in you....

Be thankful for what you have
Honestly, what does Animatt expect Smurfs to be? It's not meant to be that deep or engaging. It's like with Care Bears. Most people expect it to be for kids, nothing all that deep to begin with. Once in a while, something like My Little Pony could pull off something that pleases both audiences, but that's because there's different generations of MLP and the world is set in is much bigger, while Smurfs had concrete story and characters in a world that's a bit smaller than say mlp or even Care Bears, where it would be hard to "do it's own thing".
I'm just saying there really isn't much they could have done, without not staying true to the source material since there really isn't much to the source material to begin with.. Shoot, the opening theme of the show was "Lalalalalala"!

My complaint wouldn’t be that it’s just for kids because that’s what I want when I buy a movie for my kids. I don’t want adult jokes hidden in there or pop culture references ( but I know there’s a bit) Smurfs was originally created for children so I’m happy to hear that the humour is geared to kids. Why do adults complain sometimes that they want a kids movie to be something “ they can watch” or “ sit through”? Let kids movies be for kids.

So far this year, the animated movies that people are looking forward to are all by disney, pixar, and illumination' s despicable me 3. The only reason I want the smoking movie to come out is so Sony will see the light and make a movie worth my time and money. As for dreamworks, they need to clean up their act, hire better writers, and lay off the bathroom humor.
