  • Cherry seed germination without cold stratification. In this video, I show you how to germinate cherry seeds fast and without cold stratification (so you don't need to put them in the fridge).
    I wanted to test this out to see how fast I could get cherry seeds to germinate. The results were interesting.
    For me, cherry seed germination has been difficult. I've tried different ways, with AND without cold stratification. This method has been the best and most successful method thus far.
    You can speed up the germination rate open cherry pits and remove the cherry seed. I show you how to open cherry pits in this video too.

    Either they're very susceptible, or there's too much fungal presence while germinating. You don't need the bag, it may just be encouraging stagnant conditions. Also the presence of oxygen oxidizes things; can help reduce occurrence of mold. I just put the paper towel on a clean plastic lid or something similar, add water whenever required. I would soak them until they start splitting open, then you should transfer them in to fluffly, well broken up, moist but not wet soil. You should avoid letting the seeds root grow too large before planting; you risk breaking it when planting. The tap root needs to face down; you need to poke a hole with a pencil or similar object, gently put the root down in to the hole. Then gently and lightly push some dirt from the sides in around the root just so it has some contact with soil.

    It is amazing how you are able to germinate so many different seeds through your patient trail and error! I never would have thought to try cherry seeds! They looked pretty good after germination...they just didn't want to take off after planting them? Great video!!🪱🪱🪱

      No, they didn't want to take off after planting! I don't know why because this is what I usually do with some other seedlings and it works. Cherries just don't like fully cooperating with me for some reason.

    I crack the kernels, put the seeds straight into compost and give it a good soak. This avoids more handling, breaking seeds and roots and stems, the mold that often forms in the paper towel method. Too much sun can kill the tiny plants to start off with.

      I've stuck some cherry seeds straight into potting mix and have only gotten one to germinate. I've tried different ways. Cherry seeds just don't want to germinate for me, but I hope your comment helps someone else!

      @@vesgardens A numbers game often and plus supermarket seeds can be considered nearly free. It is an interesting activity, I always enjoy seeing what I might get when seeds are planted from supermarket stock even if the germination rate is poor for cherry seeds. (In the wild the germination rate doesn't seem all that great, from my own observations.)
      Aside from cherries I've done all sorts of seeds from the supermarket eg plums, nectarines, oranges, lemons, apples, lychees, mango (outside cap removed) (very high germination rate when planted straight into compost for the above), pears, pecans.
      I think all people who try have a curious and optimistic streak.

    • @vesgardens
      @vesgardens  Před 9 měsíci +2

      I like seeing what I'd get too. When I first got into germinating store bought fruit seeds I was germinating any and everything. I remember looking up a company and found, even though it wasn't on the packaging, it had a trademarked name and/or is patented. That got me wondering if some were sterile because I could never grow anything from them. Definitely became more mindful after that.
      Hope all of your fruit trees are doing well, especially the lychee if you have it.

    • @kynchan3332
      @kynchan3332 Před 9 měsíci

      @@vesgardens There certainly are a small number of food producers who go so far as to protect certain varieties of crops with genetic engineering to have sterile seeds and seeds that need to be chemically activated for germination. But the majority don't.
      My fruit trees have done very well. Plums, nectarines and citrus have yielded good fruit. Lychees in soil have done very well. Other lychees I have kept in glasses where I'll fill with water during the day to cover the roots and empty on the evening, have stunted growth - wanted small plants. Lychees produce lovely red leaves that turn green as they mature. No fruit off the lychees or mango yet.
      I've tested many other seeds, stems, tubers and bulbs from the supermarket to reliably produce crops eg potatoes, sweet potato, ginger, garlic, all manner of dried beans and peas, brown rice, butternut squash, mustard, cumin, coriander, chili, fennel, flax etc.

    It can be done without cold stratification. Missing a lot of important steps though. Stop using tap water. Use distilled water with hydrogen peroxide (50/50mix) soak the seeds for a few hours then place them in the paper towel (not dripping wet)in a ziplock bag with no air inside. You should not have any mold and still germinate without the cold stratification. Many steps after but this should put you in the right direction and control the mold.

    The fastest way will sprout in 3-4 days. After soaking for several hours, peel the skin membrane and also open the skin covering the prospective roots. Then, put the potential roots on the seeds into moist Cocopeat. You don't need to cover them up, let the seeds show... then cover the container so that the Cocopeat remains moist. Place it in a bright place but not exposed to direct sunlight. In 2-3 days the seeds will change color to green and will germinate within 3-4 days (depending on the quality of the seeds). The second method is after the skin membrane is peeled, the seeds are soaked, the water content only half the body of the seed, don't let it sink.. the important thing is that the potential roots get water.. the seeds will burst after 1-2 days after they burst. Move them to cocopeat in the same way, place the potential roots facing down.. then cover the container so it's moist... deep within 4 days the seeds will start to sprout... from the results of my experiment... within a week 4 leaves will come out... Good luck... sorry for my english🤭

    • @cunyilox
      @cunyilox Před 22 dny

      Before using cocopeat, I sterilize it first by dousing it with boiling water... sterilize the container with alcohol and sterilize my hands with alcohol so there is no mold.
