Over the last three years, I've come to realize the Steelcase Gesture is one of my favorite Steelcase chairs. From it's high end look, to armrests that are so adjustable, I can't believe everyone wouldn't be able to find a comfortable position. So why can't I actually get completely comfortable?

The ultimate Steelcase chair would be one that looks attractive like the Gesture and has its arms, has all the adjustability of the Leap v2 and the comfort of the Amia.
Don't forget
"has the Gesture's headrest"
“has the Gesture’s seat slide adjustment”
I would expect the chair to be around $3,800+ with all these combinations
@@devincampbell5007 The perfect chair at this point.
This along with what devincampbell5007 said should be in the works (at least I hope) as I wasn't happy when I went to the showroom and sat in the Leap v2 nor the Gesture.
I really loved when I sat in the Aeron the way it cradled my back (lumbar and thoracic) perfectly and seat seemed fine as well apart from when I sat right the way back I noticed my tailbone on the edge of the backing just touching the underframe of the mesh. I think that may cause issues longer (which I will go back and try) as after this I've tried all Steelcases and all Herman Millers (inc Embody and Gaming Embody) and just wasn't sold on any.
I just don't seem to be able to get 100% comfortable and the Aeron was the ONLY chair I've ever sat in with an immediate wow factor (which it was the chair at the bottom of my list funny enough originally)
My partner also sat in it and LOVED it (but refused to spend that kind of money on it, so bought an Ergo chair from Ikea) but for me (since I have more back pain as I've been in IT all my life) it was even more a game changer.
Hopefully my third visit will prove my fears unfounded otherwise I'm back to square one again......
PS In the last 10 years I've been using the ErgoHuman V1 and that thing originally solved a lot of backpain (different sorts) that I had, but I think caused other types as it has a slight decline and that made me slouch unconsciously forward
@@devincampbell5007 Naw the tech and those parts are already there so shouldn't cost that much. Most of the money they try and recoup is in R&D and since you are literally just taking the parts from other chairs should be quite reasonable the price.
Hopefully Steelseries look at this and is somehow getting this feedback instead of it being lost to these channels.
I bought one with headrest after watching your reviews. My IKEA Markus chair is 14 years old (I removed the arm rests about 5 years ago) and I started getting a few twinges in back/leg so thought it was time. It's great, only had it a few days but so far so good. I have a bad habit of leaning with too much of my weight on my elbow if the arms are too high so being able to keep them 1 notch above lowest point is pretty good so far. The arms only have about 4 height locked positions. The back has 4 lock positions, up right (Mr 90 Degrees :)), something like 100 degrees which luckily works for me, then something like 120 and 130. Being 6'4" and being used to the Markus it was the headrest which is the most important thing for me and thats good enough adjustments to get it right, it does take a while though, I think I have it now. Seat comfort wise yeah it needs more than it has so I'll be getting some extra foam cushion in the future, at the moment a folded towel is working ok.
Bonkers money but divided by 10 years isn't so bad I guess.
Very good video again. Sometimes I envy you - you switch so often between great chairs :D Im using the Embody at home and Aeron at work/the office - but once in a while I would like to rock a steelcase for some days. Even though the Gesture and the fancy arms are not for me, I rarely play with the armrest after setting them up.
The Lamia makes a return!!! I would love to see a full review of it. Since you guys refurbish both Leap V2s and Amia chairs, could you do a refurbished version into a Lamia?
I wish I could Frankenstein a bunch of steelcase chair parts together. Every chair they make is generally ok, has a saving grace but also a downfall.
I got a used 5yo Think in good condition (needed cleaning and replacing the wheels) for ~45usd so I can't really complain. But I do wish it went a bit lower (I'm short) and that the back had tilting force and lumber strength adjustability.
I had both new. I returned the Gesture and kept the Leap 😊
I just got it last week. I think it's great, the arm adjustability is a joy.
Awesome review. Do you have any tricks for cleaning the fabric?
I've had it for a little over 5 years. Pre-covid I usually worked from my company's office which had Leaps. I got the Gesture though and, for me, I didn't find one more comfortable than the other but really liked the Gesture's design. I got a red one with the white/grey frame and a headrest. No regrets!
Mine has 2 issues one it slides up to highest setting when not on it and it resists going back down . Any suggestions?
Man, if you guys started to sell Lamias w/ an adapted chair control, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
In my mind, the ideal Steelcase chair is the leap v2 back and frame, Gesture headrest/armrests, and the Amia seat pad. That Frankenstein would be a dream come true.
I actually found the backrest and the seat better on the Gesture than the Leap by a large margin. The sales lady also said to me most guys are similar to myself (with ladies being the opposite) but I haven't been able to try the Amia.
Steel series should take this seriously into consideration though from all the feedback I've heard (hopefully it is going to them and not staying on these channels)
@@TheSydguy30I found the seat and backrest better on the leap than the gesture by a large margin lol.
I’ve gotta admit, the gesture arms are top tier though. Leap arms are still good regardless, just not as good.
Did you ever come back to the gesture with headrest? Can't find any videos on it after this one. Really curious
Amazing video as always! I love my Steelcase Gesture with the headrest. This is hands down the best chair CZcams channel!!
Is it normal for the lumbar support to slide downwards after some hours of usage and need reconfiguration? It usually happens for me when the lumbar support is under the curve of the back which generally acts as stop for the lumbar support both upwards or downwards (needs a little more pressure to move it through the curve).
I've got the exact experience as you are. Do you have recommendation other than Amia for comfortable seatpad? I got pain too on my tailbone after few hours sitting here
Thanks for the video. Watched this twice, still wasn't clear, so what's your #1 favorite?
I have a gesture and my gas cylinder gave up. Does anyone know a gas cylinder I can buy? I have tried 3 different ones but none of them was a good fit. Valve was always pressed so I could not adjust the height of the chair.
Hi, did you get the headrest? did it make any difference? thanks!
How about a chair that allows me to NOT use the armrests at all so I can play guitar without any obstruction?
is it worth it for a streamer whos trying to make it big
Does this chair reach a sitting height of at least 20" max
I’ve heard a view that back pain issues can be encouraged or made worse with arm rests. The thinking was that they can encourage the person to slouch laterally one way or another, rather than sitting straight up. Associated thoughts (for those with back issues) was to remove arm rests from chairs where possible. Is this a topic you could dig into?
Interesting my chronic neck headaches are nearly gone since I switched to a chair without arm rests
You say the lumbar support is not great. What is a chair with a better lumbar support?
Hey, could we request a video of this “Lamia” that you rave about? If there’s good reasons that you can’t do it we will understand but the curiosity is killing me lol!
Thanks for the feedback. Did you notice any noises like cracking from the backrest or seat ?
I've seen ppl complain about that before, not sure it's a common issue though.
Damn wish Steelcase actually makes the Lamia even at a premium- perhaps BTOD can make more of them to fill this gap in the market????
The seat pad problem troubled me as well until I bought a footstep. It totally changes the experience.
I got tailbone pain issue using gesture. By footstep do you mean simply rising your feet? How does that help?🤔
I had it and had to send it back unfortunately. Something about the back rest tilt mechanism doesn't feel right, but what was much worse were the hard edges around the seat in the front and side.
Why the hell would the seat go narrower towards the front instead of just staying straight.
A great chair, killed for me due to unnecessary design choices to make it look nice, was a real bummer.
Adore almost everything about the Gesture, except the seat just kills me too.
I understand that firm is better, but after an hour I feel like I'm sitting on a rock.
Had one for 2 weeks, would sit on the Gesture for 30min before reaching for a kitchen chair or some generic 9-5 office chair I borrowed from work.
Couldn't agree more the Gesture seat is beyond awful. I sold mine. I tried to make it work...I just couldn't. What did you end up replacing it with?
@@sittkukk8278 I am about to get a Haworth Fern.
The seat is a wee bit softer, the arms are a major downgrade, and the back quality is rather close for something noticeably cheaper.
Can you tell how is Acuity from Allsteel?
are you guys selling gestures yet?
would you still reccommend this chair?
im tied between the fern executive and the gesture with the headrest. i live in Australia i am 5,7 and 120pounds.
they seem to be close in price.
i have also considered the embody but heard its not very good if your skinny
I have a gesture at my office and honestly I traded with a co worker. Could never get comfortable and traded for his Amia instead. So much better…
I'm totally with you on the aesthetics of the Gesture. I wanted to like it more than the Leap so badly because of how pretty it is but I just couldn't get over how good the tilt function is on the Leap where the seat moves forward slightly as the back reclines. The Gesture doesn't do that and it made enough of a difference for me to go with the Leap.
Gesture is better
@@xboxgamerz22 It isn't though.
@@xboxgamerz22 Battlefield is better
@@Fat_Catt battle field 3 is better.
@@xboxgamerz22 Yeah I sat on the leap and really didn't find it comfortable, I found the Gesture much more comfortable. My gf liked the Leap better and the saleslady says most guys go for the Gesture and most females the Leap from her personal experience, just the difference in the seat and the male vs female body.
Hunting for an office chair that fits your body, helps with disc problems, and can allow you to sit (good and bad posture) for at least 2hrs (my job) is a nightmare. I am willing at this point to spend the thousands but watching and researching, i am finding a major flaw in each of this these high end chairs.
Gesture seems to be the best choice for me for the max weight.
For the life of me I can't understand why the Amia doesn't have a headrest. Can someone explain it to me like I'm 5. I'm going to buy a Gesture just because I want a headrest. 😫
I'm actually testing both the leap v2 and gesture right now. The gesture's headrest I feel is one of the best as it seems to be able to be in every direction. I also really like the armrests way more than that of the leap.
However I seem to have some similar problems that you point out. Compared to the HM Aeron and the Leap V2, which has good support and curvature at my lumbar area, the Gesture feels like it has this really giant curve to it with very little lumbar support. It makes me feel like I am never sitting on it correctly no matter how hard I try and contributes to me shifting in my seat all the time.
The seat cushion has 2 problems for me. I can never feel properly support while sitting on this chair because it feels like the seat is angled forward and constantly trying to eject me forward. My tailbone also starts to hurt like immediately and I find myself shifting around a lot just trying to find a position where that isn't the case.
The only big problem I have with the Leap V2 is that the only way I can get a headrest outside of Steelcase seems to be hacking one up. I really wish they invested more in the Leap's headrest and had a good option to use since I do really like the Leap V2.
Gesture better
@@xboxgamerz22 No it isn't, stop being so ignorant. Just because you're obsessed with it, doesn't mean the rest of us are.
Did you say the chair your using is the Lamia? or the Amia?
I use the leap, Amia and Lamia. Amia and Lamia at the office, and Leap at home -Greg
I think the Gesture is great for people on the lighter side in terms of weight. I find the cushion extremely comfortable.
True
Gesture better +1
If you don't mind me asking what's your weight? Im around 80kgs and 1.9m+ and been eyeing on this one.
I'm thinking if the seat pad is the only bad thing, why not just get an extra layer from Amazon or something for cheap? Problem solved then right? Also where is the headrest review? It's been over a year! :)
Just because I'm curious, would it be possible to put the arms of a Gesture onto the body of the Leap V2. Ideally, if you could do that and put the Amia seat on it, it'd be the perfect chair
6:22 what chair is that? is it his favorite?
Steelcase Leap with Amia seat. Their hybrid creation.
Could we get a review for people that tuck a foot under or go completely cross legged. Ergonomic? No but it's the only way I sit and the only chair I've used for 10 years is the staples tempur-pedic tp9000. The pneumatic is not as good as it was and I want a new chair. It doesn't look like there's many options for me out there. I like the chairs that have a chair pan that moves out so I would feel less like I'm always on the edge. I would need the softest possible cushion as well.
The seat pad is easily the worst thing about this chair for me too. I would expect that spending $1k+ on a chair would at least get you a comfortable chair. the way I get around it is with a standing desk and taking breaks in general. Its probably the better for my overall health like that anyway lol
awesome video
did sayl pad more comfortable than this?
Your comment is old but I have a Sayl, had a Leap, and tried the Gesture in a showroom. The Sayl does have a better pad than both of these imo. The Leap is too restrictive and the Gesture is just not supportive enough. The Sayl is simple and doesn't try to force your body in any position. It's firm enough to support you but not so firm that it hurts.
The only downside I have with the Sayl is the backrest height, at 1.80m for me it's a bit short and the end corners poke into my back a bit. Not a deal breaker, just not an endgame chair.
The gesture is brutal compared to others… might be my height and being 210lbs, but to me it can’t compare to Amia
Gesture is better than leap 2
Nope, the Leap v2 is more adjustable and comfortable. I see a lot more complaints about the Gesture, in comparison to the Leap v2 and Amia.
Apart from Steelcase chairs feeling a mediocre design all together, I can't justify those armrests either. But really, there are very limited usecases where such an armrest comes in handy, and the so called flexibility becomes a marketing B.S. imo. The lumbar on the Gesture is way too harsh, the seat padding is even worse, it has pressure points and makes it impossible to use it for hours. Overall it is a flawed design with features nobody would really use. I would preferably go with some Herman Miller in this price range...
Finally, a gaming chair for mobile gamers 🤣
Unironically genius
I really wish you had a woman on board every once in a while to give reviews. You have more muscle and weight (generally speaking ... more muscle than me anyway) so you naturally have more muscle to use when leaning back or adjusting the chair. I have the same problem with tool reviews. A man's idea of 'light' is not always my idea of lightweight. Even if her choices and feedback does not differ, it would be good to know someone with my build (my muscle strength ... probably won't find a guy with as little muscle as I have) finds it easy to use.
Thanks for showing how bad the seat foam is on the gesture. I'm going with the embody.
How ya liking the embody? did you get the regular w scrim foam?
@@sittkukk8278 i got the logitech gaming version. happy with the purchase
@@vloneseraph Glad to hear. I m going either w amia or embody. dont have gaming tho here
